Title Tag issue
-
Hello,
This is a weird one. I am hoping someone can point me in the right direction.
A couple months ago, we updated trinitypower.com and it was back then that I first noticed this issue, but because the home page title tag was okay and contained the primary terms for that page, I told myself I would circle back.
The problem is that even though Google crawls the site everyday, it does not update the title tag text in it's index.
-
Google: "Trinity Power Rentals" and you will see the title in the index as "Trinity Power: Temporary Power Rentals".
-
Go to trinitypower.com and view source. You will see the title tag in the code as "Temporary Power Rentals - Trinity Power"
The desc tag has been updated correctly, but I can't figure out why not the Title tag. You can look at the cache version in the index of Google. It is showing the latest version of that tag, so I really do not understand what has happened here.
I am using WP Super Cache... maybe a conflict with that? I have dumped it's cache numerous times though.
Please let me know what you think.
Thanks,
Jarrett

Np!

Great, thanks for feedback guys, much appreciated. I was not really that concerned as the Title Google has chosen to use, works. Nice to know that it is not an issue with the code or a plugin conflict.
Thanks again,
J

Hi Jarrett,
Max and Robert are both correct. Google sometimes displays different titles based on what they believe is the user's intent. In your case specifically, I think Google is displaying a title tag that makes sense.
Think about it, if someone is using a query that includes your **brand name **they are likely trying to find your website as quickly as possible. By pushing your brand name to the beginning of the title tag it may be easier for the user to recognize that the 1st result is in fact your website.
You can always try different variations of your title tag to see if Google will change it (for example, "Temporary Power Rentals | Trinity Power" or "Temporary Power Rentals by Trinity Power") but in my opinion, because it is a branded search term, Google will probably display your brand name first no matter what.
I personally wouldn't be overly concerned about this specific occurrence.
Hope this clears things up a bit!

Hi, rest assured. It has nothing to do with your site or your site's cache. I have seen this happen on my sites as well.
Search Engine Land wrote about this at http://searchengineland.com/advanced-seo-learning-experiments-using-googles-title-tag-changes-example-189850 they link to a Google Support page that states the following:
_If we’ve detected that a particular result has [...] issues with its title, we may try to generate an improved title from anchors, on-page text, or other sources. However, sometimes even pages with well-formulated, concise, descriptive titles will end up with different titles in our search results to better indicate their relevance to the query. _
There’s a simple reason for this: the title tag as specified by a webmaster is limited to being static, fixed regardless of the query. Once we know the user’s query, we can often find alternative text from a page that better explains why that result is relevant. Using this alternative text as a title helps the user, and it also can help your site. Users are scanning for their query terms or other signs of relevance in the results, and a title that is tailored for the query can increase the chances that they will click through.
There's also this video from Google Webmaster Tools YouTube channel where Matt Cutts goes over the "Why would Google do that?" question: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L3HX_8BAhB4

Check my comments here: http://moz.com/community/q/has-google-changed-how-it-displays-metatitles-for-business-listings
Analyze your homepage with your preferred keyword density analyzer, and you will find out the top 2 words keyword is "temporary power" and your top 3 words keyword is "temporary power rentals".
Now guess what google think is the most appropriate title in SERP?

Issues with Multiple H1 tags on homepage?
Hi folks, My homepage has 3 identical H1 tags due to the fact that I have had to create individual hero images (with headings) for desktop, tablet and mobile. I couldn't get my theme to display the layout in exactly the way I wanted on each device without doing a specific hero image and tag for each device type. Does this have a major impact on my SEO? Thanks,

Canonical tags in the body?
Hi there, Does anyone know if placing canonical tags in the body instead of the header of a page will still "take"? The system we are on means that making an editable header is no easy business and I was just wondering how big of a difference it makes to have it in a different area. Thank you in advance.

How to separate your - keywords - and | Brand name in the Title Tag
I have traditionally used hyphens (-) and vertical bars (|) to separate out keywords/brands in title tags. A client has asked if other characters will work such as tilde (~), apersat (@), forward slash (/) etc. Are there any special characters we should steer clear of?

How bad is it going over 70 character for title tag length?
I know less than 70 is recommended. I am about to run a script to create some title tags and a few will be between 71-74. Is going just the few characters over ok until I can get in there and manually do them?

Are lots of wordpress tags hurting my SEO?
When I started my blog 4 years ago and didn't know what I was doing, I set it up to be organized using tags (no categories). I have around 20 tags and around 250 articles. Each blog article typically has 2-4 tags associated with it. There is a lot of topic overlap and putting each post in only one category wouldn't work. I have been no indexing, do follow my tag pages because they are just a list of post titles, but I'm wondering if the whole situation is hurting my SEO. On my homepage I have a sidebar menu/list of all the tags so I have link juice going to no indexed (but dofollow) pages. Reducing the number of tags would be bad for user experience because people who were looking for info on a specific topic wouldn't be as easily able to find what they want. Ideas?

Canonical Tag for Ecommerce Site
My client has an ecommerce site with over 1,000 products. We have a ton of duplicates because of how their ecommerce system handles product pages. Each time a new product is added, there is a default product page created (/product/12345-product-name.aspx). Each time that product is added to a specific product category, another, separate URL is created (/product/office-chairs/12345-product-name.aspx). The site has over 1,000 duplicates (at least one for each product) because of how the ecommerce system structures URLs. We are unable to have unique content on /products/12345-product-name.aspx and /product/office-chairs/12345-product-name.aspx because both pages pull from the same database. Their webteam informed me that they can't implement canonical tags on individual pages, they must be dynamically added to the site all at once. Thus forcing me to choose all of the default product pages as primary URLs. Both types of URLs are getting indexed and the product URLs that were added to the categories are SEO friendly so I'm leary to eliminate one or the other with a canonical tag or a no index. Suggestions?

Duplicate content issue in SEOmoz campaign.
Hi, We are running a campaign for a website in SEOmoz. We get a dup content issue warning: http://www.oursite.com and http://www.oursite.com/ are being seen as 2 different urls. Only difference among 2 urls is the trailing slash at the end of the second url. Why is this happening? I was aware of www vs non www but never heard of an issue related to the slash. Thanks for your help!

Changing page titles and google penalties?
I just recently learned that changing your page title earns you a google penalty. Unfortunately i learned this after playing around with my page titles a bit to get the most optimal page titles. Does anybody know how long this google penalty lasts? is it forever? or just temporary?
