Where can I find a breakdown of google search volume by specific industry/vertical? For example, what % of people searching in google are looking for housing? Cars? Restaurants?
-
I"m looking for specific breakdowns of search volume in google by:
#1 Vertical (Shopping/restaurants/Services etc).
For example, how many people are searching in google for information pertaining to restaurants per month? Search volume for all of 2012, 2013, 2014?
#2 More granular categories within verticals, people searching for: books, apartment rentals, cellphones)
Is there a breakdown of google search somewhere online that gives this type of information?
Thank you MOZ community, really appreciate it!

Hi
Sorry for repeating, but you gave the answer all by yourself: if you need to know how many people searched for "New car" in the U.S. , you can use both Adwords keyword tool and google trends to get this data. Here is an example for the car industry. Once you determine the keywords you need, you can benchmark and analyze data with many tools (eg. google trends and google adwords, or also semrush, searchmetrics, and moz tools), to get the trends and search volume for all those keywords, and get insights on the industry field youre working on.
Hope this helped

I really appreciate you thinking this through for me, but think about it. Let's take the restaurant industry. There have to be people out there making presentations and putting in facts like "X # of searches are being made by people in the U.S. looking for local restaurants (for example). Or the car industry, people need stats like "X number of people searching for a new car in the U.S. this month"
These statistics seem a vital part of the search community, and understanding these statistics when putting together any kind of global online marketing plan seem important.
Any other ideas to really dig down and get some more specifics?

I think having search volume by vertical is not easy or possible. This because there are so many queries users can use to get to a certain page. Another solution is to use google trends, but you will have to define general keywords for your search: as google shows here you can use trends to target your business and compare different keywords for it to get insights at the business search volume.
But I don't think you can find such data in other ways. What kind of results would you like to expect?
Car Industry: 100.000.000 searches / month
Advertising: 100.000.000 searches / month
It would not be possible: where for example you would then put a query such as "Audi Commercial Advertising". This because queries can target several business industries. What do you think?

Thanks for the tip here!
There must be some place online where we can see the breakdown of search volume by vertical? Anyone out there in the moz community done a research report or found a research report that shows google search volume by category/vertical over the last 5 years?

This is a new tool from google that helps you see how each channel was influential in the conversion path with breakdown by industry type. This isn't anyway what you were looking for. The only other suggestion that comes to my mind:
Use Keyword Planner from Adwords, and search for ideas of your keyword. Then type something generic (like car insurance) to see all related searches to that particular topic, to get a rough idea of what the search volume is for all those queries.
Hope this helps

Google Rankings Dropped in Past Few Weeks
Hi All, I work for an online appliance retailer and over the past weeks, we've seen a drop in our google SERPs. This time last year we were ranking in the top 3 for our top converting key terms, but now we are ranking towards the bottom of the first page or even on the top of the second page with the big box stores now dominating for our key terms. Needless to say traffic for these pages has dropped off considerably. We still have quite a bit of traffic coming in for other key terms, but they don't convert as well. Is anyone else seeing the same thing? If so what are you doing to combat this? Do you have any suggestions? Thank you!

Google Maps marker inconsistency
We just discovered that depending on the address format you enter into Google, you may come across incorrectly placed marker locations on Google Maps. Is this because our Google Places address format is not consistent with Google Maps' format? If so, when I go into Google Places to update the address format, am I going to have to go through the citation process all over again?

Wrong Google pin locations
Did something happen recently that would affect pin locations on Google Maps? I've been updating Google Places pages, but not touching the address or pins - but I received a phone call from one of my locations that their pin location changed in the past month and now it is wrong. Meanwhile, another department recently had MomentFeed update the pins for accuracy. Thoughts?

What are tips for ranking on Google Maps?
I have another thread going where everyone is saying to keep both the Places profile as well as the Google Plus Local profile I have for my company. I have another person telling me that it has a negative effect to have both accounts at the same time so I'm assuming thats why the listing never comes up on places unless you zoom all the way into the map to the address of the storefront. With that being said, can anyone provide some good tips for ranking first page on google maps? Does a KML file have to be indexed by Google?
I'm currently using the Yoast Local SEO plugin for WordPress to generate my KML file which is linked to from the GeoSitemap. Check it out http://www.holycitycatering.com/sitemap_index.xml. A competitor of mine just told me that this isn't correct and that the link to the KML should be a downloadable file that's indexed in Google. This is the opposite of what Yoast is saying... "He's wrong. 🙂 And the KML isn't a file, it's being rendered. You wouldn't want it to be indexed anyway, you just want Google to find the information in there. What is the best way to create a KML? Should it be indexed?

Phantom Indexed: 301 Redirected Old URL Shows in Google Search Result!
Today, I have read about Phantom Indexed in Google search result. Because, I was searching about 301 redirect due to indexing of 301 redirected old URLs in Google search result rather than new landing pages. I've added my comment on jennita's blog post about 301 redirect. I would like to paste similar question over here! I have 301 redirected following 3 domains to new website... http://www.lampslightingandmore.com/ To http://www.vistastores.com/table-lamps http://www.vistapatioumbrellas.com/ To http://www.vistastores.com/patio-umbrellas http://www.spiderofficechairs.com/ To http://www.vistastores.com/office-chairs I have done it before 3 months but, Google still shows me home page URL in search result rather than new landing page. You can check following search results to know more about it. For LampsLightingandMore ~ On second or third page::: For VistaPatioUmbrellas ~ On second or third page::: For SpiderOfficeChairs ~ On Second or third page::: I come to know about Phantom Indexed after raised my comment over there. So, why should not start discussion on it. Because, It's all about branding and who'll love to hang old address in front of new home.

Test contet/pages indexed by search engines
During the web development stages of our Joomla CMS website, we have managed to get our site indexed for totally irrelevant test pages mainly to do with Joomla and some other equally irrelevant test content. How damaging is this to our domain from an SEO prospective and is there something we can do about it? When we do a site:domain.com search we see hundreds of testpages with test/irrelevant meta tags etc.

Related Searches in Google
Hello, We're helping a client remove/minimize some negative information about their brand in Google's search results. Just curious about your take on if the related searches that appear at the bottom of Google search results can in any way be influenced or if it is more a combination of so many factors that any one person or organization wouldn't be able to change very easily? I've heard the related results could be influenced if enough queries generated overtake the "negative" queries done initially but I feel like that is venturing into black hat land a bit. thanks -Mike
