Confused: Url Restructure
-
Hello,
We're giving our website a bit of a spring clean in terms of SEO. The site is doing ok, but after the time invested in SEO, content and last year's migration of multiple sites into one, we're not seeing the increase in traffic we had hoped.
Our current urls look something like this:
/a-cake-company/cup-cakes/strawberry
We have the company name as the first level as we with the migration we migrated many companies into one site. What we're considering is testing some pages with a structure like this:
/cup-cakes/cup-cake-company-strawberry
So we'll lose a level and we'll focus more on the category of the product rather than the brand.
What's your thoughts on this? We weren't going to do a mass change yet, just a test, but is this something we should be focusing on? In terms of organisation our current url structure is perfect, but what about from an SEO point of view? In terms of keywords customers are looking for both options.
Thanks!

Hi again Harry
Here's what I would do.
I would take a look at the following resources:
On-Page Factors (Moz)
The Ultimate Guide to SEO for E-commerce Websites (KISSmetrics)
17 Essential SEO Strategies for E-Commerce Sites (Inc)
Technical Site Audit Checklist: 2015 Edition (Moz)There are probably opportunities beyond your URL structure that you are missing - your URL structure and depth (you're not going that deep at all) alone won't hurt your PA and DA the way you think it will.
Do a quick honest assessment of the layout and content of your website and see where you can enhance areas.
Let me know if you have any questions! Good luck!

Thanks Patrick!
They are all separate companies and our customer deals with all the different brands, so we have to keep them all separate.
We currently are using:** /cake-company/cupcakes/type-of-cupcake **as suggested, but we're worried it's too far down by the time you get to the product?
We've seen the PA be significantly reduced by being this deep and wonder if it has any other effect SEO wise?
Thank you!
-
Hi again
I see - sorry about that!
If you are showcasing different companies on your site then it should be...
/cake-company/cupcakes/type-of-cupcake
Apologies on that. Out of curiosity - are all of these companies separate and active companies? Or did they all merge into one larger company? Or is this like a listing website of different companies an their products?
-
Thanks for your response Patrick!
The problem we have is that because we represent 8 brands, these aren't in our domain, so in order to include the domain we currently have those as level one, e.g.:
/cake-company-1
/cake-company-2
/cake-company-3etc...
Our current url structure allows us to have the site neatly organised under each manufacturer of our products, but this then makes the urls quite long and deep.
Would you suggest combining the brand with the product it's self so that they are both in the url and this therefore reduces the url by one level?
E.g. - /cake-company-1-cup-cakes/strawberry
That way we can have:
/cake-company-2-cup-cakes/strawberry
/cake-company-3-cup-cakes/strawberry
/cake-company-4-cup-cakes/strawberryEtc?
Thanks!

Hi there
If it were upto me, I would suggest the URLs going something like this:
www.brandname.com/cupcakes/strawberry
This tells me the brand, the type of product, and then a specific product. The beauty here is you can do it with all of your products (if you have more):
www.brandname.com/cupcakes/carrot-cake
www.brandname.com/cupcakes/strawberry-lemonade
www.brandname.com/cakes/bundtIf you have variations below cupcake but above flavor, you can add that between cupcakes and flavors, so:
www.brandname.com/cupcakes/variation/flavors
or...
www.brandname.com/cupcakes/best-sellers/flavors
www.brandname.com/cupcakes/favorites/flavorsEither way, I wouldn't put your company name as a folder path because it should already be in the domain of your website.
Here are some more resources if you want to read a bit more into URL structures - here is a great resource as well from Rand - I suggest doing so!
Hope this helps a bit! Let me know if you have any questions or comments - good luck!

Consolidate URLs on Wordpress?
Hi Guys, On a WordPress site, we are working with currently has multiple different versions of each URL per page. See screenshot: https://d.pr/i/ZC8bZt Data example: https://tinyurl.com/y8suzh6c Right now the non-https version redirects to the equivalent https versions while some of the https versions don't redirect and are status code 200. We all want all of them to redirect to the highlighted blue version (row a).Is this easily doable in wordpress and how would one go about it? Cheers.

Duplicate content with URLs
Hi all, Do you think that is possible to have duplicate content issues because we provide a unique image with 5 different URLs ? In the HTML code pages, just one URL is provide. It's enough for that Google don't see the other URLs or not ? Example, in this article : http://www.parismatch.com/People/Kim-Kardashian-sa-securite-n-a-pas-de-prix-1092112 The same image is available on: http://cdn-parismatch.ladmedia.fr/var/news/storage/images/paris-match/people/kim-kardashian-sa-securite-n-a-pas-de-prix-1092112/15629236-1-fre-FR/Kim-Kardashian-sa-securite-n-a-pas-de-prix.jpg http://resize-parismatch.ladmedia.fr/img/var/news/storage/images/paris-match/people/kim-kardashian-sa-securite-n-a-pas-de-prix-1092112/15629236-1-fre-FR/Kim-Kardashian-sa-securite-n-a-pas-de-prix.jpg http://resize1-parismatch.ladmedia.fr/img/var/news/storage/images/paris-match/people/kim-kardashian-sa-securite-n-a-pas-de-prix-1092112/15629236-1-fre-FR/Kim-Kardashian-sa-securite-n-a-pas-de-prix.jpg http://resize2-parismatch.ladmedia.fr/img/var/news/storage/images/paris-match/people/kim-kardashian-sa-securite-n-a-pas-de-prix-1092112/15629236-1-fre-FR/Kim-Kardashian-sa-securite-n-a-pas-de-prix.jpg http://resize3-parismatch.ladmedia.fr/img/var/news/storage/images/paris-match/people/kim-kardashian-sa-securite-n-a-pas-de-prix-1092112/15629236-1-fre-FR/Kim-Kardashian-sa-securite-n-a-pas-de-prix.jpg Thank you very much for your help. Are these URL hashtags an SEO issue?
Hi guys - I'm looking at a website which uses hashtags to reveal the relevant content So there's page intro text which stays the same... then you can click a button and the text below that changes So this is www.blablabla.com/packages is the main page - and www.blablabla.com/packages#firstpackage reveals first package text on this page - www.blablabla.com/packages#secondpackage reveals second package text on this same page - and so on. What's the best way to deal with this? My understanding is the URLs after # will not be indexed very easily/atall by Google - what is best practice in this situation?

301 forwarding old urls to new urls - when should you update sitemap?
Hello Mozzers, If you are amending your urls - 301ing to new URLs - when in the process should you update your sitemap to reflect the new urls? I have heard some suggest you should submit a new sitemap alongside old sitemap to support indexing of new URLs, but I've no idea whether that advice is valid or not. Thanks in advance, Luke

Duplicate content across internation urls
We have a large site with 1,000+ pages of content to launch in the UK. Much of this content is already being used on a .nz url which is going to stay. Do you see this as an issue or do you thin Google will take localised factoring into consideration. We could add a link from the NZ pages to the UK. We cant noindex the pages as this is not an option. Thanks

Optimal URLs for SEO and UX
We are considering restructuring the URL scheme on one of the websites we maintain. We have a few options. Currently news article URLs are as follows:
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | Peter264
http://domain.com/news/1234/article-title-name/ Download section URLs are as follows:
http://domain.com/downloads/files/1234/file-title-of-download-here/ Forum URLS:
http://forum.domain.com/forum/topic/1234/title-of-forum-topic-here/ We feel that these are a bit too long for both SEO and user experience. We want to remove as many directories from the URLs as possible. From experience, what do you recommend changing for the example URLs above? We have some ideas below...and we need to keep the ID in the URLs...however I know this is a little frustrating. Some ideas we have for news articles:
http://domain.com/news/article-title-shorter-1234
http://domain.com/article-title-shorter-n1234 Some ideas for the download pages:
http://domain.com/downloads/file-title-shorter-d1234
http://domain.com/downloads/files/file-title-shorter-1234
http://domain.com/file-title-shorter-d1234 Some ideas for the forum URLs:
http://forum.domain.com/topic-title-shorter-t1234
http://forum.domain.com/topic/topic-title-shorter-1234 What do you think of these suggestions? Any other URL ideas? Recommended URL length? The purpose of is question was to find the perfect URLs for the site we are working on; your thoughts, suggestions and tips are very much appreciated.0
