My current SEO plan
-
Hello,
I am new to SEO. I had this plan and understanding that I thought was a good one but seems to not be working as well as I thought.
Basically I thought that showing for a keyword was based on how close you had a page on your site with a title tag to the search and how many quality links you had to your sites. Also the content had to be original.
So I had two plans. The first was to make specifically high value pages on my site (what to do when you are stopped by the police) and then try to seek out links for those pages.
My second plan was to make keyword specific pages for things in different cities. IE Car Accident Lawyer Brampton, Real Estate Lawyer Brampton, Find a lawyer Brampton. I hired some law students to re-write the same page basically with different language for every city, thinking that this would solve the duplicate content issue.
This worked very well at first but for some reason yesterday all of my car accident city pages were de-indexed and I'm not sure why. http://www.lawyerconnection.ca/practice-areas/car-accident-injury-lawyers/ Very few other pages were de-indexed but I know that one of the find a lawyer pages was de-indexed. Also the page I linked above was not de-indexed, just the city pages linked from that page.
I am not sure why the car accident pages were de-indexed. Too Similar to each other? Too similar to the slip and fall pages? (Any help on that much appreciated)
Anyway I'm freaking out and now questioning the whole plan! Any thoughts on my whole general SEO plan would be much appreciate. Is this a good one? Am I doing something wrong?

Ok, so going forward if I let's say, profile a local lawyer on each local page, or a few local lawyers is that ok?
Can I still title it Find a Lawyer Brampton, Find a Lawyer Mississauga, Find a Lawyer Stratford, if it is more unique from page to page? Let me know, thanks.

If you leave them up, Google's Panda algo might decide that your site is low quality and demote all of your rankings.
I would remove them or noindex them.
-
Interesting. Perhaps I will try that.
Do you think leaving all these cloney pages up right now is a risk to the site?
If so how do i manually (temporarily) de-index them until I fix them?
-
Great, maybe you can get your partners to write this stuff.
-
We don't have a physical presence but we have a large partner network across those cities.
-
Landscapers, architects, and construction companies who want search visibility in multiple cities write articles with photos and descriptions of previous work that they have done in those cities. Companies who have stores, beauty salons, and restaurants in multiple communities have photos of their places of business with nice descriptions of what they do, the people they serve and the professionals who work there. If you are unable to do these things they you really have no business presence in these areas and Google sets a high bar to block out spam.
-
Ok, so let's say I'm willing to spend significant time on each page.
What could I even write that would make them really unique? I mean I am giving the same information for each one just for the specific cities, no?
-
It's not that page that's de-indexed. It's all the pages linked from that page. See when I do the same thing you just did it says de-indexed.
-
Hi there
This page is not deindexed, you're also targeting an difficult keyword in the phrase "Car Accident Injury Lawyers" with no search volume.
Benchmark your metrics in OSE. I would also take a look at answer I gave in your previous question - there are so many resources to help you get started on a strategy!
Hope this helps! Good luck!

**I am not sure why the car accident pages were de-indexed. **
New pages often perform fine until Google figures out that they are cookie-cutter duplicates. Then they are filtered from search results. The next time Panda runs the rankings across your entire site could be reduced. What you see today could be just the start of your problems.
If you want unique content, make it entirely, completely, absolutely unique. Shortcutting by plugging in different place names and synonyms has not worked with Google for several years.

Do links from International SEO counterpart site carry weight?
Hi everyone! One of our clients has a competitor who has an international reach with their website. Their hreflang goes from Brazil, German, US, China, etc. We found that the Chinese site (.cn) sends over 900,000+ backlinks to the main US site (.com). The hreflang for the site has the .com US version of the site as the canonical. So my question is - does our competitor get any link equity from the 900,000 links they are getting from their Chinese (.cn) version of the site? My initial thought is that because they are marked up with hreflang and canonical tags, those 900,000+ links wouldn't' have any equity? Would love some thoughts/guidance on what others think.

What are the SEO value of revolving or rotating lists of links?
What are the SEO value of revolving or rotating lists of links? For example the links at the bottom of the homepage of inlandnwopera.com. The links are based in images and I am not really sure Google would pick them up but they do appear on ahrefs.com. Thank you.

Citation, Google Plus and SEO questions
Hi, I have a website www.gemslearninginstitute.com. We offer different after school programs for kids located in Canada. I have a very basic knowledge of SEO. I have a few questions. Just wondering if someone can please help me. We offer UCMAS Mental Math Program, Tutoring and Chess School/Coaching and runs a Chess Club. I would like to boost my google ranking and get more local traffic. 1- My citation is not consistent. Which program should I use to correct the citation and delete duplicate or inconsistent listing automatically. 2 - Should I do the citation with my company name only “GEMS Learning Institute” or Should I do like this “GEMS learning Institute – UCMAS-Tutoring-Chess”. Which one is better? 3- Right now I have two different google plus business pages. One with the name of “GEMS Learning Institute” and the second one is UCMAS. Should I have only one page as GEMS and delete the UCMAS. 4- I am not sure how to check if my site is penalized by google. 5- How can I measure things which are working on not? Can you please recommend next steps should I take after doing citation to improve the ranking? Thanks in advance and appreciate help.

Do hyphenated searches impact SEO?
Something I recently considered was whether a hyphen in a search term would effect the results that come up. For example, Is there a difference between using 'i-phone' and 'i phone' as anchor text? Some of my search results seem similar but do show some slight differences. Can anyone shed light on the matter?

Local SEO - Directory Submissions Not Counting Towards External Links
I'm trying to raise the authority of a clients website. It's a local business so I'm submitting it to various applicable high authority business directories to earn more external links. I've submitted it to about 15 directories so far; however when I run Moz's Open Site Explorer, it doesn't state that any of these directories are linking. It's been about 3 weeks now so I assume that's enough time for the directory submissions to be indexed by Google. Has anyone else run into this problem, and if so how did you solve this so these links are counted?

Are sites that "smell of SEO" being demoted?
I'm working with a site owner who recently hired an SEO to work on just one particular type of keyword. It seems like the more work the SEO did, the lower the keyword gradually dropped. Granted, the "work" is pretty low quality - anchor texted bookmarks, comments and low quality articles. We're doing an experiment where we are going to disavow those links and see if the previous rankings return. Another site that I am consulting with has a lot of good natural links and then some anchor texted links, but from decent sources - some guest posts (on good sites - not a spammy site that exists only for guest posts) and some places where decent websites have agreed to link to the site. The anchor texted links do not make up very much of the overall anchor text. There is good diversity and lots of brand and url anchored links. It seems like the more the SEO does for this site, the more the rankings drop. And it's not all about anchor text. The SEO placed a link in a relevant directory, using the url as anchor...rankings dropped a little. They obtained an expired domain with relevant and very natural links and 301'd it to the new domain...rankings dropped several places. And so on. Occasionally the rankings will pop up a little, but overall it's a downward spiral. Check out this post by Gary Taylor. He did an experiment where he took an established site that was ranking well and threw some spammy links at it. To quote the article, 'every day goes by my ranking for the term “domains” is getting harder to maintain.' He recently tweeted that he has been removing and disavowing links and the rankings are returning. I was looking at searches for real estate related terms in different cities. In some cities, the top sites are ones that have ZERO obvious SEO done to them. There are sites ranking on page 3 that have been SEO'd, and not all of them have poor SEO. Many are what I would consider really well done. Some of the sites ranking on page 1 have under 10 links. There was one with 2 followed links and they were not from super authoritative sites! To complicate matters though, if you look at searches like "Toronto Real Estate Agents" some of the top sites have lots of keyword anchor texted links. Perhaps this should be a blog post rather than a Q&A, but I would love to hear some of your thoughts. My personal thought is that Google's main goal with Penguin and the unnatural links warnings is to make it so that not only is it not profitable to try to manipulate the SERPS, but that every time you try to do so, you potentially do your rankings harm. I used to say that Penguin could only affect a site on the date of a Penguin refresh, but I am thinking now that Google has managed to roll Penguin into the algorithm to some extent so that it can demote the majority of any work that smells of SEO. Thoughts?

Value of IMG links for SEO
Hello, I'm looking for some new ways to build links (IE, letitimate not spam), and I know sites featuring a site that I created would be an interesting way to do so. My question is this, the StudioPress Showcase pages http://www.studiopress.com/showcase/baltimore-print-studios link back to your site with an image, with some "Almost URL Alt text". How valuable would this link be, given that the DA is 97 and the PA is in the upper 40s Thanks Zach

Local SEO: Citation Consistency
My company manages local SEO campaigns for local-service SMBs (e.g. plumbers, dentists). One of the things we do is claim and manage directory listings. To provide trackable results, we apply tracking phone numbers to the directory listings, but those phone numbers don't match the phone number listed on the client's site. So we have a problem from a citation consistency standpoint. On the one hand, we'd like everything to be consistent -- business name, address and phone number -- to achieve citation consistency. On the other hand, we want to prove the value of what we're doing by showing the client data from tracked phone calls. Can we provide best-practice Local SEO and Maps Optimization - and achieve citation consistency - even if we're introducing inconsistency by using tracking numbers?
