Should I bother with a Video Sitemap?
-
Morning all,
I've started a pretty aggressive Video content push in recent weeks. All our videos are on our YouTube channel. I decided to go with hosting the videos on YouTube based on my research on moz.com, especially considering the potential reach of the content on YouTube.
What I'm finding is that the YouTube channel is doing great. We've hit 200 subscribers and 15K views in a little under a month. Wayyyy more than I could have ever hoped for. But the blog posts on our website are getting minimal traffic and no search visibility. That doesn't necessarily bother me, since the intention of our marketing campaign is to use YouTube to drive traffic to our website. So I guess my question is really more to do with optimizing the site with Video Sitemaps and best practices for Google Webmaster Tools.
Right now we have YouTube videos embedded on blog posts like this one that have a time-stamp. But I've been working to create Gallery-style pages (no time-stamp) which would have multiple YouTube videos embedded on them like this one. These make it easier for visitors to watch multiple videos without needing to skip around to multiple blog posts.
The challenge I'm running into is that when I go to submit a Video Sitemap to GWT I get an error saying that I have duplicate page content within the video sitemap. I've used several WP plugins to do this. It seems that when there is a video embedded on multiple URLs (pages + posts) the plugins will ignore the posts and only add the pages to the video sitemap.
I've attached a screenshot of my current Yoast Video SEO config if that's useful for reference.
Does anyone have experience with using multiple sitemaps in GWT? I'm starting to think that maybe I shouldn't even bother with a video sitemap. Maybe those gallery-style pages should just go in the regular sitemap?
Any thoughts or advice would be highly appreciated! Thanks

Yes, the videos have a common theme and we rank pretty well on long-tail variants of the main keyword. The bounce rate for that page is well under average for the site and we get a handful of new users every day.

I'm actually struggling to even build a video sitemap at this point. The Yoast SEO plugin is causing trouble and won't put my pages into the sitemap at all.
How do you optimize your gallery-style pages? Are you focusing on a top-level keyword? Something common to all videos?

This is an interesting question for me. We have been doing video for a while and do it like you, hosted on YouTube. I have never really considered a video sitemap, because I always assumed that YouTube will outrank us for any given video of ours (the typical situation if you have your content on a much more powerful website). And that is what I do see on video search. We do get some organic traffic to our gallery-type page, though. For now, I will probably keep things the way they are, since we get a good amount of traffic from YouTube and that is the main point, but I would like to hear if anyone has had video sitemaps boost traffic to their own site.

Best server-side xml sitemap generator?
I have tried xml-sitemaps which tends to crash when spidering my site(s) and requires multiple manual resumes which aren't practical for our businesses. Please let me know if any other server-side generators that could be used on multiple enterprise-sized websites exist that could be a good fit. Image sitemaps would also be helpfu.l +++One with multiple starting URLs would help spidering/indexing the most important sections of our sites. Also, has anyone heard of or used Dyno Mapper? This also looks like a good solution for us, but was wondering if anyone has had any experience with this product.

What’s the best way to handle multiple website languages in terms of metatags that should be used and pages sent on our sitemap?
Hey everyone, Has anyone here worked with SEO + website translations? When should we use canonical or alternate tag if we want the user to find our page on the language he used on Google? Should we send all pages on all the different locales on the sitemap? Looking forward to hearing from you! Thanks!

Our parent company has included their sitemap links in our robots.txt file - will that have an impact on the way our site is crawled?
Our parent company has included their sitemap links in our robots.txt file. All of their sitemap links are on a different domain and I'm wondering if this will have any impact on our searchability or potential rankings.

Sitemap Priority and Recency
Perhaps more of a discussion here than a definite answer, but we are looking at making periodic changes to the priority and recency of our sitemap pages, but would have to repopulate that information each time our plugin updates for our WordPress site. Is this something that is even worth doing or are these updates not impactful enough to merit adding it to our process? Thanks all!

Sitemap Indexation
When we use HTML sitemap. Many a times i have seen that the sitemap itself gets mapped to keywords which it shouldn't have got to. So should we keep the HTML sitemap as No-Index, Follow or does anyone has a better solution that the sitemap doesn't show-up for other keyword terms that actually isn't representing this page.

Big discrepancies between pages in Google's index and pages in sitemap
Hi, I'm noticing a huge difference in the number of pages in Googles index (using 'site:' search) versus the number of pages indexed by Google in Webmaster tools. (ie 20,600 in 'site:' search vs 5,100 submitted via the dynamic sitemap.) Anyone know possible causes for this and how i can fix? It's an ecommerce site but i can't see any issues with duplicate content - they employ a very good canonical tag strategy. Could it be that Google has decided to ignore the canonical tag? Any help appreciated, Karen

Sitemap contains Meta NOINDEX pages - Good or bad?
Hi, Our sitemap is created by our e-commerce software - Magento - We are probably going to make a lot of products Meta No Index for the moment, until all the content has been corrected on them - but by default, as they are enabled, they will appear in Sitemap. So, the question is: "Should pages that are Meta NOINDEX be listed in a sitemap"? Does it matter? thanks!

Video Optimization
I'm interested in marking up videos on a site, so we can get those videos ranking on Google as rich snippets. Anyway, i've been looking at Googles support on this - http://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=2413309&topic=1088474&ctx=topic And they recommend scheme.org markup. I looked at Rands whiteboard friday videos - and it seems based on what i seen from the source code - that there is no scheme.org markup - http://www.seomoz.org/blog/fixing-the-broken-culture-of-seo-metrics-whiteboard-friday Also for the life of me, i've been trying to find sites with videos with scheme.org markup, and can't find any! Its driving me nuts, i just want to see a real life example! -- Matt
