Need Advice on Home page Conversion Rate Improvement - not much $$s
-
Anyone out there have some suggestions for how I can improve my home page and increase my lousy conversion rate?
I've spent years on the content and SEO optimization of my site and very little time on making a home page that sells stuff. Caveat - I don't have the money to go to one of those fancy companies who do a complete makeover and charge in the tens of thousands.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Try some AB or multi variate testing. It neednt cost the earth, or anything.
You can use content experiments via Analytics.
A few comments on current home page:
- The images on the home page look like ads rather than navigation. I dont think that works.
- What is it you want people to do when they get to the home page? Do a wine search? If so make the wine form search facility more prominent.
- I would include 'any' in your dropdowns. Its feasible people get to your site and dont know what winery name they want.
- Get rid of 'start over' you dont need it until they've done a a search.
- Look at your in-page analytics and see where people navigate to from the home page. That will tell you alot about what you should be featuring more on that page.

Yep.... they recorded ours too.
Before the first call they studied the site and came prepared to the call.
We discussed the site and the objectives, brainstormed potential changes then left the call. Â We got a recording here.
We then made changes and ran them. Â Shared changes with SiteTuners.
Then a second call to review what happened, discussed more tweaks.
We learned a lot.

I second Site Tuners. Rachel did an evaluation for a client's site and it was excellent. They record the entire presentation and you can play it back as well to ensure you do not miss anything.

I don't have the money to go to one of those fancy companies who do a complete makeover and charge in the tens of thousands.
I've gotten a homepage and landing page evaluation from Tim and Rachel at SiteTuners for a couple thousand.
Well worth the time and money.
You can throw darts or pay a little for great advice. We use what we learned now in so many places.
Get a loan from your uncle, sell your baseball cards, get a temporary job at McDs. Â You will get your money back. Â Do it now. Â Opportunities are slipping through your site.

Hi Jean,
I've always dreamed of doing SEO for a wine site! Okay, first, there's an awesome tool that you should know about at http://www.optimizely.com  I believe you can get a free trial for 30 days with full access to everything they have to offer. They have really good customer support. After that you pay by how much traffic your site gets and believe me, considering what you discover, it's a bargain (We are a large e-commerce site and it runs us $79 a month).
Now I have a few questions. When you refer to "conversion rate" are referring to your site-wide conversion rate or the conversion rate of the home page specifically? The reason I ask is because maybe it's not your homepage that's the conversion problem.
Do you have a goal funnel set up in Google ANalytics? If not, I'd do that first thing. Not only is it free, but it's going to show you exactly where people are falling out in the conversion process. Perhaps the problem is in your shopping cart and not on your homepage...it's a possibility. It would be a shame spending a lot of time and effort optimizing the homepage when it's not the main source of the problem. That being said, let's assume for argument's sake that your homepage is part of the problem. I'd begin by tagging different links in different sections and perhaps even looking at your heat map and site performance in Google analytics to determine what people are paying attaching to and what they are ignoring.
Above all, don't change too much of anything all at once. You'll never be able to identify what worked and why that way. Make changes to one thing at a time and track the results. Check your ego at the door (I'm not saying you have one, I've just seen it too many times where a split test result came back that the CEO didn't like so the results were ignored and changes never implemented), Let the data drive your actions.
Meclabs (via Marketing SHerpa), Wider Funnel and Steve Krug's Book "Rocket Surgery Made Easy" and his older book "Don't make me think" Â are all great resources for optimization webinars, ideas and advice.
Good luck. I'm sure I'm not the only SEO in here who would be happy to work for wine

Experiences Tracking Phone Call Conversions?
Tracking conversions via phone call can be challenging. The Adwords phone ads only register a conversion if someone clicks on the phone number from their mobile phone. In many cases a landing page on a website has a lead/contact form AND a phone number displayed. The user calling that number would not be registered as a conversion unless you setup multiple virtual forwarding phone numbers for prominent keywords, ad groups and/or campaigns. This can be costly for smaller advertisers. Has anyone done or know of any empirical data on the average percentage of leads generated via phone call versus online form on a landing page. I know it can vary from business type to business type (and the form layout itself will have a modest effect.) More specifically I'm interested in the professional business services industry such as Engineering, Surveying, Commercial Real Estate, Accounting, etc. So for example if you conversion rate for online form submission on a landing page is 3%, and your phone number is prominently displayed, what would be a realistic ballpark estimate for the actual conversion rate including phone calls? 25% more? 50% more? Double? "Ballpark" is the keyword here.  Just seeing if anyone has measured this and what their results were.

However, how do I, if possible track a mobile visitor who the converts on a desktop? Eg. I go on XXX Facebook Ad on my mobile whilst in work, look around. Like what I see. Then I go home from work, open my laptopn and go on XXX website and send an email enquiry form in. Is this possible to track? Thanks

Multiple Thank You pages with one Contact form - PPC
Hi everyone,
Conversion Rate Optimization | | Carla_Dawson
I am running a PPC (Google Adwords Campaign) and it is pretty big. I have about 25 landing pages each with a Contact Form. I need the contact form to go to a unique thank you page for each landing page to measure conversions via Google Adwords. In other words I need the contact form on submission to redirect to a specific and unique thank you page that I can define. The contact form needs to be the same for all landing pages to avoid having to produce 25 landing pages. I am ok with producing 25 Example
http://www.maindomain.com/landing-page-1Â redirects tohttp://www.maindomain.com/thank-you-1 http://www.maindomain.com/landing-page-2Â redirects tohttp://www.maindomain.com/thank-you-2 http://www.maindomain.com/landing-page-3Â redirects tohttp://www.maindomain.com/thank-you-3 Can someone help me with this?

Conversion Suggestions or Ideas
Late last year we did an overhaul of our website. We didn't change we did or what we sell just the format and overall look. What used to work for Adwords and Adcenter conversions doesn't seem to work as well on the new site. Any suggestions on where I should start to turn this around?

Thoughts on meta descriptions - best click through rates
Hi All, I recently heard a tip from a prominent SEO'r that meta tags should be custom written by professional copywriters. Well, I want to head down that path. What are your thoughts on these two options: Buy the top-selling <xyz product="">. 20 year warranty, 30 day money guarantee + free, fast shipping! Includes <1-2 features or included accessories of product></xyz> or Buy our top-rated <xyz product="">today</xyz> & save! Over 20 5-star rated reviews + free, fast shipping! Includes <1-2 features or included accessories of product> Would you focus on the warranty, reviews, product accessories, money back guarantee, free shipping over a certain cutoff, customer service (which we have a toll free number for) or another factor? Are there any good articles out there outlining this? Do you think the way I've structured it is good/readable? What about the use of '+' instead of '&'? Is the cutoff limit still 156 chars? Any thoughts/views/ideas are most appreciated! Thanks

How to improve my conversions
Hey all, As always thanks in advance to any help given. So I think we haven't done a bad job, but I know there is always more that can be done with conversions. We have a website which provides guestlist to clubs in London, we are competitive on our keywords and ppc and get the clicks through with very very relevant adverts and meta descriptions.... The questions is 'How do I improve our conversion rate on page?' The said pages are setup like the examples below: www.capitalalist.com/movida-guestlist/ www.capitalalist.com/chinawhite-guestlist/ www.capitalalist.com/mahiki-guestlist/ The conversion comes when the click 'join guestlist' and fill out the form. Any help with be GREATLY appreciated!
