Why are they ranking?
-
Hi
I've been looking at domains which rank well for a particular search term - plastic storage boxes to try and see why they rank.
http://www.poundstretcher.co.uk/home-furniture/storage-organisation/plastic-storage ranks particularly well.
From what I can see, they have about 6 backlinks, 28 DA, and 11 PA - which isn't that high compared to others ranking on the first page.
I can't work out why they rank so highly, they also rank for over 100 other storage terms for this page.
Am I looking in the wrong place?

Great thank you, I usually find I get more detailed info from Majestic, but I'll look over Moz first
-
Hi
The one thing I guess I need to do, is prioritise by ranking factors, as there are over 200 - what is going to have the biggest impact. As I am the only SEO I need to make sure I am putting my efforts in the bes place possible. I am seeing authoritative links to the root domain and content as being the biggest factors - as well as UX
Thank you!

HI Thomas,
This great thank you, I am trying to add more content and include user guides onto the site so we can increase the on page. I just want to ensure this content is useful for the customer as well as google.
Thank you for the links, I'll check them out!

You also need to look at the perceived quality of the links to the 2 pages. Tesco has more but not as valuable as Poundstretcher.
-
You can use Moz Open Site Explorer (https://moz.com/researchtools/ose/) but Majestic and aHrefs have similar functionality too. In Moz, play with the filters. For Target you can choose "this root domain". For link type, you can filter by "only follow". This should give you a more well-rounded picture of the entire domain, not just a given page.
-
Hi,
I haven't actually so I will take a look, thank you
-
Hi,
Thank you for the feedback, can I ask what tool you use for this? Is it within Moz or Majestic for the backlinks?
-
-
Are you only looking at the data for just this particular page? I took a look at the entire root domain and it looks like they've got some pretty high-value followed backlinks. For example, here's a followed backlink from the BBC: http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-lincolnshire-34157367.
The subpage is probably seeing a combination benefit of high Domain Authority paired with strong on-page keyword relevance (and over 200 other things). Domains that already do well in search tend to get their new pages to rank even more quickly, and in some cases that can be true even before those pages have many backlinks.

Thanks for the reply, I'll take a look.
I couldn't see any social signals.
Thank you for the article, I'll give it a read

Poundstretcher has category content on the page that you linked, which in comparison to the tesco site there is a lot more on page content, hence the probable increase in rankings. See this image for the content: https://gyazo.com/df52dd151308160aef2296f0a0c58d07
I have done a test personally on 7 categories in the past couple of months on a site I am working on and have seen some massive ranking jumps just from me adding this content.
Here is an interesting conversation on the topic: http://forums.seochat.com/search-engine-optimization-28/e-commerce-categories-descriptions-anno-2015-a-482420.html

Hi Rob,
They all have a big range, this one http://www.tesco.com/direct/home/crates-boxes/cat3375608.cat
Has a DA of 80 and PA of 32, nothing stood out to me from the example above so I was curious
-
There are over 200 ranking factors (other sources says even more) so it's extremely difficult to says why this page is ranking. Probably their on-page optimization is good and outperform competitors? Or they have more social signals? Or they have better UI/UX that users like? Or they CTR is better?
So if site X have Y backlinks and their DA is Z there isn't guaranteed that they will position better than site A with B backlinks and DA = C (where Y >> B and Z >> C).
You should also see Rand Fishkin presentation:

and grab some fresh ideas about better optimization. Also see with attention their tests and results. -
Links aren't the only factor to ranking a site, by the look of it they've got a quality site with a reasonable range of plastic storage boxes, which makes this page very relevant to the search term.
Am I right in saying that the other brands who have a higher DA/PA have less of a range?

How To Rank For Easy Keywords (24-26 keyword competitivness)
Hello Moz members, Quick Question for today !!
Competitive Research | | SebastianP
Please, who is involved in backlinking processes/White hat SEO these kind of things pm me, I really appreciate some great responses to this specific thread. I have a blog 3 months old with quality articles on it (600 to 1000 words each article+fotos+videos+infographics), and the keyword targeted that is on the homepage have that 26 kW competitiveness keyword. What I really need to focus on if I want to be number 1 for that term? somehow on social media more?
My competition seems to have little to no backlinks, but they have a domain or PA bigger than 30. How can I increase my domain and page authority faster?I still have 30 backlinks and PA/DA and also PR = 0. I want to know specifically which tasks I need to Master if I want to be number 1 in Google for a keyword that have JUST 26 Keyword competitiveness in MOZ.
I mean, this is a very easy keyword to rank for but I didn't rank yet. Maybe from my description you can give me some gold nuggets here Thank you so much ! Regards,

How does my competitor website jump from a natural ranking of 10 to 1 in a matter of days?
OK this has really got me baffled, and I really hope the MOZ community can give me the answers I am seeking.... My statements and queries below are my own opinions and thoughts. I am not an experienced SEOer and I am learning all the time, so if I have written something incorrectly, please feel free to correct me 🙂 I have been told that natural rankings take time, and I have read with the recent algorithm changes from Google, that purchased links do not have an effect like they used to. I have also read somewhere that google has clamped down on bogus article writing (MOZ please clarify) But what I am seeking some clarification on is, how does my competitors website, that has had a natural rank of #1 in the past, suddenly drop off; for a lengthy period of time, then suddenly re-appear at #10 on page #1, then some three/four days later, hit #1? I have read that natural rankings are purely natural. I.e. a domain owner cannot pay google to boost their natural ranking. But is this really true? Why is it when I speak to a close colleague of mine in the same industry, he mentions that his maps listing has dropped off, and after making a couple of phone calls to his SEO guys in India, maybe a day or two later, magically his maps re-appear? I really am starting to question is a "natural ranking" really "natural?" I have heard that some of these SEO agencies do have some tools that dramatically effect the natural ranking of a domain. What are these tools?

Why do keyword competition rankings differ between Google and SeoMoz?
I am a novice at keyword ranking etc. so I appreciate your patience! I checked a longtail keyword - how do i get out of this relationship - in Google AdWords and it came back 'low competition.' When I entered it in SeoMoz it came back as 'very competitive.' Any thoughts? I appreciate your help.

Can anyone explain this top-10 ranking?
How on earth can http://www.plimun.com/ be at #6 for "web design", with only 15 total linking root domains, and no mention of the term in link text?! See: http://www.opensiteexplorer.org/comparisons?site=www.plimun.com This is one of the biggest anomalies I've ever seen.

8500+ seomoz errors and still rank one for high traffic keywords
I plugged a competitor into the campaign manager that is ranking #1 for many target keywords like "sprinkler parts" (18k broad, 720 exact) and "sprinklers"(550k broad, 4400 exact) and #2 for "sprinkler"(1mil broad, 8100 exact). This site has over 8500 errors on SEOmoz - I have spent a good deal of time fixing errors on all of our client websites and have gotten them down to 0 errors. I am just wondering if I have been wasting my time and if the errors that SEOmoz reports on even make a difference. How can a site rank for such high traffic keywords when it has 4k duplicate content and 4k duplicate page title errors? The site has 75 linking root domains according to opensiteexplorer. any help on this would be greatly appreciated!

Hi, I have this one page designed to rank for a spesific word i google (sweden). The page has a flawless moz grade A on-page. While my competator ranks for their subdomain, also grade A. I rank 6 he ranks 2 in google. Would I be doing a misstake if i 301 directed it to mu subdomain. In visitor perspective it would be a better landig page aswell. I dont want to lose my rank though. Best practice, anyone?
