Think of your page like the front of a newspaper.
Your H1 is your big headline. Short sharp and to the point. People skim pages when reading, but will read headlines. If the H1 catches the attention they are more inclined to read on.
Continue skimming down the page of the newspaper (your page) you may skip 'normal text' but your eyes catch the next H2, which is like your newspaper sub-title.
I went to a Matt Bailey seminar once, and he did a great piece on how pages catch the attention and how people read/skim pages. He has a book which also covered it.

The h1 tag should help the customer - so it should be customer centric. You have a split part of a second to capture the customers attention so often short and sweet matching a variation of the target keyword phrase is the way to go.

From my understanding, there is technically no limit to the length of an H1 tag. Rule of thumb for me was always to keep it short and to the point. You don't want to water down any relevancy gained from the h1 by shoving too much into it.

Title Tags & Keyword Order
Hi I've read various articles on this - some saying it's still important to have the keyword at the beginning of the title and some saying it's not a big factor anymore? Does anyone have an opinion on this?

Code Monitor Recommendations
Hi all, I was wondering if you have any recommendations for a code monitor? We'd like to keep track of any code and content changes on a couple of websites. We've taken a look at Page Monitor: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/page-monitor/pemhgklkefakciniebenbfclihhmmfcd?hl=en but I'm not sure if it tracks code changes? Any suggestions for free or paid tools would be appreciated. Edit: We'd also like to avoid a tool that requires any tracking code changes or anything that involves a database/FTP connection.

Lowercase VS. Uppercase Canonical tags?
Hi MOZ, I was hoping that someone could help shed some light on an issue I'm having with URL structure and the canonical tag. The company I work for is a distributor of electrical products and our E-commerce site is structured so that our URL's (specifically, our product detail page URL's) include a portion (the part #) that is all uppercase (e.g: buy/OEL-Worldwide-Industries/AFW-PG-10-10). The issue is that we have just recently included a canonical tag in all of our product detail pages and the programmer that worked on this project has every canonical tag in lowercase instead of uppercase. Now, in GWT, I'm seeing over 20,000-25,000 "duplicate title tags" or "duplicate descriptions". Is this an issue? Could this issue be resolved by simply changing the canonical tag to reflect the uppercase URL's? I'm not too well versed in canonical tags and would love a little insight. Thanks!

Use of the Canonical Tag, Both Internally and Cross Domain
I've seen the cross domain canonical not work at all in my test cases. And an interesting point was brought to my attention today. That point was that in order for the canonical tag to work, the page that you are referencing needs to have the exact same content. And that this was the whole point of the canonical tag, not for it to be used as a 301 but for it to consolidate pages with the same content. I want to know if this is true. Does the page you reference with a canonical tag have to have the same exact content? And what have been your experiences with using the canonical tag referencing another page on a different domain that has the same exact subject matter but not the exact duplicate content?
