News Errors In Google Search Console
-
Years ago a site I'm working on was publishing news as one form of content on the site.
Since then, has stopped publishing news, but still has a q&a forum, blogs, articles... all kinds of stuff.
Now, it triggers "News Errors" in GWT under crawl errors. These errors are
"Article disproportionately short"
"Article fragmented" on some q&a forum pages
"Article too long" on some longer q&a forum pages
"No sentences found"
Since there are thousands of these forum pages and it's problem seems to be a news critique, I'm wondering what I should do about it. It seems to be holding these non-news pages to a news standard:
https://support.google.com/news/publisher/answer/40787?hl=en
For instance, is there a way and would it be a good idea to get the hell out of Google News, since we don't publish news anymore? Would there be possible negatives worth considering?
What's baffling is, these are not designated news urls. The ones we used to have were /news/title-of-the-story per...
https://support.google.com/news/publisher/answer/2481373?hl=en&ref_topic=2481296
Or, does this really not matter and I should just blow it off as a problem.
The weird thing is that we recently went from http to https and The Google News interface still has us as http and gives the option to add https, which I am reluctant to do sine we aren't really in the news business anymore.
What do you think I should do?
Thanks!

Update: 5 months later, the problem has long since gone away.

Thanks for the answers Matthew & Martijn. So, I'm going to go with what I have in place... 301s to the main forums page to pick up/recycle the incoming links to that section and removing the /news category from where Google News looks for news, but not leave the Google News program altogether right now.
Thanks, again!
-
I'd opt for 301s if there is any link equity on those pages worth pushing to the forum pages. If not, I'd robots.txt them out to save on wasted crawl.
-
HI Matthew,
Thanks for the insight. On your, "I think the important part is that Google doesn't suddenly crawl a bunch of 404s that they think are news pages of some importance" would you robots.txt out the old category they looked at (/news) or leave it and figure out via the mass of 301s and the removal from the url structure we told them to crawl, so that Google figures it out on it's own?
-
Hi there,
It wouldn't be a problem to get out of Google News, but by the same logic, it wouldn't hurt just to leave it alone and let them figure out you're not publishing news anymore. It won't affect your web search rankings, since you're not targeting traffic from the news onebox or news.google.com.
These old pages redirect to forum pages? I think the important part is that Google doesn't suddenly crawl a bunch of 404s that they think are news pages of some importance.
-
Possible, hard to guess what your current set-up looks like. What you could do alternatively is set up a robots.txt with Disallow statement that are only targeting the Google News bot instead of just the general Google Bot.
-
Hi Martijn,
We still have the old /news url still in Google News. I don't think we've ever submitted a news site map.
Is there any downside to deleting the url structure they're currently looking at, which does forward to our forum? Or, would it be better to just get out of Google News altogether, since we don't really have or publish news anymore? Is there a downside to that?
To summarize... delete the url they look to as news or get out of Google News altogether... what do you think?
Thanks!
-
Are you still submitting a Google News Sitemap to Google Search Console? Because usually that's the biggest reason where these errors are coming from because Google is picking up these kind of 'new' pages/articles as news content and then seeing it doesn't match with their guidelines.

How old is 404 data from Google Search Console?
I was wondering how old the 404 data from Google Search Console actually is? Does anyone know over what kind of timespan their site 404s data is compiled over? How long do the 404s tend to take to disappear from the Google Search Console, once they are fixed?

How Do You Remove Video Thumbnails From Google Search Result Pages?
This is going to be a long question, but, in a nutshell, I am asking if anyone knows how to remove video thumbnails from Google's search result pages? We have had video thumbnails show up next to many of our organic listings in Google's search result pages for several months. To be clear, these are organic listings for our site, not results from performing a video search. When you click on the thumbnail or our listing title, you go to the same page on our site - a list of products or the product page. Although it was initially believed that these thumbnails drew the eye to our listings and that we would receive more traffic, we are actually seeing severe year over year declines in traffic to our category pages with thumbnails vs. category pages without thumbnails (where average rank remained relatively constant). We believe this decline is due to several things: An old date stamp that makes our listing look outdated (despite the fact that we can prove Google has spidered and updated their cache of these pages as recent as 2 days ago). We have no idea where Google is getting this datestamp from. An unrelated thumbnail to the page title, etc. - sometimes a picture of a man's face when the category is for women's handbags A difference in intent - user intends to shop or browse, not watch a video. They skip our listing because it looks like a video even though both the thumbnail and our listing click through to a category page of products. So we want to remove these video thumbnails from Google's search results without removing our pages from the index. Does anyone know how to do this? We believed that this connection between category page and video was happening in our video sitemap. We have removed all reference to video and category pages in the sitemap. After making this change and resubmitting the sitemap in Webmaster Tools, we have not seen any changes in the search results (it's been over 2 weeks). I've been reading and it appears many believe that Google can identify video embedded in pages. That makes sense. We can certainly remove videos from our category pages to truly remove the connection between category page URL and video thumbnail. However, I don't believe this is enough because in some cases you can find video thumbnails next to listings where the page has not had a video thumbnail in months (example: search for "leather handbags" and find www.ebags.com/category/handbags/m/leather - that video does not exist on that page and has not for months. Similarly, do a search for "handbags" and find www.ebags.com/department/handbags. That video has not been on that page since 2010. Any ideas?

URL errors in Google Webmaster Tool
Hi Within Google Webmaster Tool 'Crawl errors' report by clicking 'Not found' it shows 404 errors its found. By clicking any column headings and it will reorder them. One column is 'Priority' - do you think Google is telling me its ranked the errors in priority of needing a fix? There is no reference to this in the Webmaster tool help. Many thanks Nigel

Google Penguin Penalty
Howdy Guys,
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | ScottBaxterWW
We have been battling our way the Google penguin penalty and have just received our 3 knocked back reconsideration request. I posted a find on here the other day about a simple change of page title made our site jump back up... In the meantime I've built 1 hight quality link back to our site and we have moved again from #50 to #46.Have Google ever removed a penalty without telling you?Should we ask for another reconsideration request? Thanks,

Google Places Alternatives
Hello, I have been looking into Google places alternatives. Any suggestions? On a related note. I am based in the UK and looking to add a UK business to Bing Local but having read this thread ( - http://www.bing.com/community/maps/f/12264/t/653672.aspx -) I don't think it's possible. Anyone had any luck or experience? Cheers dj

Random Google?
In 2008 we performed an experiment which showed some seemingly random behaviour by Google (indexation, caching, pagerank distributiuon). Today I put the results together and analysed the data we had and got some strange results which hint at a possibility that Google purposely throws in a normal behaviour deviation here and there. Do you think Google randomises its algorithm to prevent reverse engineering and enable chance discoveries or is it all a big load balancing act which produces quasi-random behaviour?
