How to improve internal linking for automotive reseller website?
-
Hi everyone,
we set up a website for an automobile reseller. The site is online for about 10 days now and is doing ok. The competition is at a medium level.
The URL is http://fahrzeugankauf-wehrle.de/
Now I wonder how I can improve the internal linking a little more. I already read this one https://moz.com/learn/seo/internal-link but still wonder whether I should link from the sub-pages with the main keywords like "auto kaufen freiburg" oder "autoankauf freiburg" to the mainpage.
Instead I am linking right now from the mainpage to the subpage "Auto verkaufen".Isn't this a bit contradictory?

Hi,
How significant did the ranking increase?
Would you be able to go into more detail on how you approached the websites. Since each one would be in different location. Would you take a different approach from a destination location then a high traffic area location.
Thank You!
Scott

Hi Rob,
thanks again for this second very detailed answer.
I now do understand that using the silo or thematic architecture is really a good thing to establish and I'm willing to implement it in my client's website.
Now I do have one or two last questions that I am wondering about.
- Let's say I use your proposal Home --> Freiburg --> Auto Purchasing --> Auto Purchasing Freiburg which I find very good.
What do I do about the Freiburg page ? Do I just use an empty page, or do I have to fill it with content about the city of Freiburg? Does it have to show it in the menu or does it have to exist without a menu entry just to be there as a hook for the next page?
What I mean is: People and also Google will maybe wonder a little to read content dealing with Freiburg when coming to a cardealer page.
- Let's say I would use Home Page --> Cars For Sale --> BMWs For Sale --> BMW [Model]
Doesn't this produce a lot of duplicate content? I cannot imaginge having very differing content for pages like BMWs for sale, Audis for sale and Fords for sale...
Thanks again Rob for taking the time!
It really opened my eyes for a big SEO topic and takes me to the next level!
Highly appreciated!
Cheers

Hi Marc,
I had to go digging for this one as it is about 5 years old now, but it is Matt Cutts effectively stating the same thing I did in my answer above:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H49pOqkQPF4
For a better idea of what a silo looks like, you might check out this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uNVPkonEW6E
Again, an oldie but a goodie. This stuff has been around for a while and a lot of people have argued about its effectiveness. I'm just saying that in my experience it has worked wonders.
When I say "Website Silo", other names can be "Website Theme" or "Thematic Architecture" or 100 other names. Basically what you are trying to do is categorize every item or service you are selling so as to target long tail keywords as well as categorize your terms for LMI keywords. So in your case, you might try:
Home Page --> Cars For Sale --> BMWs For Sale --> BMW [Model]
since someone looking to buy a BMW is likely to use keywords like "buy a bmw" or "cost of a bmw" or "how much is a bmw" and then you can even break it down to specific models for further long tail targeting.
I used to conduct work like this for the largest auto dealer in North America - I managed about 450 websites for them for over a year with each website correlating to a location. We utilized this strategy for every dealership and the rankings/traffic boost we saw was pretty significant.
It's a lot of work from a web dev perspective, but once it's set up it's tough to beat. It's particularly useful if you only have to target a couple of locations as opposed to an entire continent like we did.
Let me know if you want to discuss how to make it happen - I'm always around to send some info your way.
Cheers,
Rob

Hi Robert,
thanks very much for your answer. I saw this kind of several times when looking at competitor sites. I wonder whether this is a procedure that is really appreciated by google. I cannot find any whiteboard Friday about it? Do you know any video from Matt Cutts, Wil Reynolds or Rand talking about this topic?
Best regards
Marc

Hi there.
The idea of internal linking is quite simple - link with relevant keyphrase to a page, you want to have some boost amongst internal rankings. It's far not necessary to have an internal link going back to main page from each of sub-pages. Just make sure that every page is accessible and navigation makes sense.
If you have sub pages which are about "Auto verkaufen" (i assume it's quite broad keyword), maybe you should have more narrow topic sub-pages and then link to them with more specific keywords?
-
Hello,
So the main point I would make here is that you are attempting to create relevancy with your internal linking to terms users may be searching for. Where I work, we call this a website silo - creating tiered relevancy based on location, keywords, intent, etc.
For example, a website which features the following architecture:
Home --> Region --> Service --> Keyword Term
Will do better than a website which features:
Home --> Keyword Term
Because such a structure is self-limiting (how many links can you really have coming off your Home Page?) and it poses technical ranking problems (a Home Page with hundreds of links coming off of it will look spammy).
This is going to be a huge factor moving forward, especially with Local SEO becoming more and more prevalent in algorithmic updates.
So you might try:
Home --> Freiburg --> Auto Sales --> Auto Sales Freiburg
Home --> Freiburg --> Auto Purchasing --> Auto Purchasing Freiburg
(Or whatever keywords you have lined up)
This means you can expand your site at a later date along geographical or service-oriented lines, and you will have created the relevancy that Google wants when showcasing organic listings.
Hope this helps and feel free to touch base with any further questions.
All the best,
Rob

Link building
ok mozers i have a few questions. I am starting a new seo campaign and i want to target traffic for "how to make money on autopilot" Question 1. when it comes to link building i have seen some articles saying that i should not send all of my links to my landing page at once but to send links to my backlinks then index then using tiered link building. Is this a must or not? will i get penalized if i build 20 targeted links to my landing page in 1 day, lets say 20, pr7-9 domains? or should i tier it out and link maybe 5 pr9 domains to my landing page, then link 10 pr5 domains to each of those 5 pr9 domains and maybe link 20-pr1 domains to each of those tiered 2 pr5 domains? eq: Tier 1 = 5 PR-9 Tier 2 = 50 PR-5 Tier 3 = 1,000 PR-1 Question 2. Is their a certain amount of backlinks i need to use in order to out do my competitor? or does it just matter on the metrics of my backlinks? and when it comes to indexing these links do i need to index just the 5 pr9 links? or do i need to index all of them? or should i just index the landing page through google webmasters tools and hope it indexes all connecting pages? will doing any of these get my landing page indexed faster in order to rank faster? Question 3. Types of link building. Ok i am targeting guest blogs, wordpress sites, etc to put a link on. Should i focus on smm 'social media marketing' as well? or can i just focus on the traditional seo tactics first? Question 4. Keyword research. ok so my blog post is 'how to make money on autpilot' and from my keyword suggestion tools it picked up a list of keywords suggestions to target. Competition ranges from low to high, search volume ranges from 10 to 1900 visitors per month, after organizing the most relevant keywords to add to my campaign should i target each of the these keywords by creating a link building campaign for each one and target it to my landing page or use it as my 2nd or 3rd tier? those are the questions i really have for now. Here is my blog post http://www.vemomedia.com/how-to-make-money-on-autopilot/ Please feel me in on what i am needing to do in order to get some ranking and on how to run a link building campaign the correct way. Thanx in advance!

Ranking problems with international website
Hey there, we have some ranking issues with our international website. It would be great if any of you could share their thoughts on that. The website uses subfolders for country and language (i.e. .com/uk/en) for the website of the UK branch in English. As the company has branches all over the world and also offers their content in many languages the url structure is quite complex. A recent problem we have seen is that in certain markets the website is not ranking with the correct country. Especially in the UK and the US, Google prefers the country subfolder for Ghana (.com/gh/en) over the .com/us/en and .com/uk/en versions. We have hreflang setup and should also have some local backlinks pointing to the correct subfolders as we switched from many ccTLDs to one gTLD. What confuses me is that when I check for incoming links (Links to your site) with GWT, the subfolder (.com/gh/en) is listed quite high in the column (Your most linked content). However the listed linking domains are not linking at all to this folder as far as I am aware. If I check them with a redirect checker they all link to different subfolders. So I have now idea why Google gives such high authority to this subfolder over the specific country subfolders. The content is pretty much identical at this stage. Has any of you experienced similar behaviour and could point me in a promising direction? Thanks a lot. Regards, Jochen

More bad links
Hi, After a recent disastrous dalliance with a rogue SEO company I disavowed quite a few domains (links he had gained) which I was receiving a penalty of about 23 places. I cleaned up the site and added meta descriptions where missing, and deleted duplicate titles and pages. This gained me another 5 places. In the meantime I have been getting a few links from wedding blogs, adobe forums and other relevant sites so was expecting an upward momentum. Since the high point of bottom of page 1 I have slowly slid back down to near the bottom of page two for my main keywords. Just checked my webmaster tools latest links and another 4 domains have appeared (gained by the dodgy SEO) : domain:erwinskee.blog.co.uk domain:grencholerz.blog.co.uk domain:valeriiees.blog.co.uk domain:gb.bizin.eu They all look bad so I am going to disavow. I expect to find an improvement when I disavow these new domains. As I have said, have started using the open site explorer tool to check my competitors backlinks and getting some low level links(I'm a wedding photographer) like forum comments and blog comments and good directories. I know there is much more than this to SEO and plan on raising my game as time progresses. I have also gained more links from the domains I disavowed on the 8th January mostly from www.friendfeed.com. will webmaster tools ignore any new links from previously disavowed domains? Like I have said I know there are better ways to get links, but are these links (forum comments, blog comments and respectable directories) one way of raising my rankings? To be honest that is all my competitors have got other than some of the top boys might have a photograph or two on another site with a link. No-one has a decent article or review anywhere (which is my next stage of getting links). Thanks! David.

Moving half my website to a new website: 301?
Good Morning! We currently have two websites which are driving all of our traffic. Our end goal is to combine the two and fold them into each other. Can I redirect the duplicate content from one domain to our main domain even though the URL's are different. Ill give an example below. (The domains are not the real domains). The CEO does not want to remove the other website entirely yet, but is willing to begin some sort of consolidation process. ABCaddiction.com is the main domain which covers everything from drug addiction to dual diagnosis treatment. ABCdualdiagnosis.com is our secondary website which covers everything as well. Can I redirect the entire drug addiction half of the website to ABCaddiction.com? With the eventual goal of moving everything together.

Can internal links from a blog harm the ranking of a page?
Here is the situation: A site was moved from its original domain to its new domain, and at the same time, the external wordpress.com blog was moved to a subdirectory, making it an onsite blog. The two pages that rank the highest on the site have virtually no links from the blog and no external links, while all the other pages are linked extensively from the blog and have backlinks. Their targeted keywords are not so much easier to rank than the other pages for that to be the sole cause. To confuse the matter even more, there was a manual penalty affecting incoming links which was removed last month. The old site, which has many backlinks to the new site, is still in Google's index. The old blog however, has been redirected page by page and is not in Google's index. Most of the blog posts are short 1-paragraph company updates and potentially considered low quality content because of that (?) The common denominator among the two highest ranked pages (I'm talking top 3 in SERP v. page 3 or 4) seems to be either the lack of external backlinks or the lack of internal links from the blog. Could there be an issue with the blog such that internal links from it are detrimental rather than helpful?

What url should i link to?
Hi everybody, after some discussions i decided to keep my page on the old domain for better seo rankings; However, the new third level domain sounds better: poltronafraubrescia.zenucchi.it.... the question is: i'm going to recive a high value link and i don't know if i should link directly to the old adress ( www.zenucchi.it/ITA/poltrona-frau-brescia.it ) where the page is located or to the new one by making a 301 redirect to the previous. what's best? and second question what's the way to keep the page on this adress ( www.zenucchi.it/ITA/poltrona-frau-brescia.it ) but show poltronafraubrescia.zenucchi.it as url? thank you guido

What type of links should be followed and nofollowed internally?
We have submitted our sitemap.xml to search engines so now that they have that should we use a nofollow attribute on the sitemap.html? Do we even need a sitemap.html? For other links on the site such as: Contact us About Us Locations and other phrases that we are not trying to rank for should we set these to nofollow?
