What Metadata should one use multi country directory
-
Currently this is what applies throughout the site. property="og:locale" content="en_GB" /> How would one set this for properties in Italy or Spain for example? (The language is all in English) Regards Tai
-
I'm assuming you include these tags for Facebook's benefit, because if you want to send localization signals to Google, it's better to use hreflang.
Hreflang allows a comprehensive range of countries and languages: you can combine any two values from the ISO-639-1 list of language codes and the ISO-3166-1 Alpha 2 list of countries.
The locales supported by Facebook are a lot more limited. You can't have en-IT for English speakers in Italy, for example, because Facebook doesn't support that value. Facebook only allows the following English-language locales:
- UK English: en-GB
- US English: en-US
- English (India): en-IN
- English (Pirate): en-PI
- English (Upside Down): en_UD
You can see Facebook's full list of supported locales on this page.
So the answer is that it won't matter where your users are. What will matter to Facebook is the style of English you use. If you write in British English, you should use en-GB, and if you use US spellings then use en-US.

Is it good practice to use hreflang on pages that have canonicals?
I have a page in English that has both English & Spanish translations on it. It is pulled in from a page generated on another site and I am not able to adjust the CSS to display only one language. Until I can fix this, I have made the English page the canonical for both. Do I still want to use hreflang for English & Spanish pages? What if I do not have a Spanish page at all. I assume (from what I've read) I should not have an hreflang on the English page. Is this correct? Thank you in advance.

Using a 302 redirect for language variants. How should I use the canonical?
Hi there, I have a question regarding the canonical tag. The current setup is like so... www.site.com 302 redirects to.. www.site.com/de/ I want to add canonical tags on every page to avoid duplicate content but I'm not sure about the homepage. Should the canonical URL be www.site.com or www.site.com/de/ ? I'm concerned that I could be about to hurt my ranking. Thanks,

Half of my site is private for members only, should I use the Nofollow on these pages?
I'm trying to increase more traffic to my website. However half of my website is for members only and you have to be logged in to see content on those pages. I'm confused on whether I should use "nofollow" on these pages or not.

Using Javascript to Display Responsive Images?
Hi We're making our new website responsive and are thinking of using a solution that would resize the images using javascript. So the image would be displayed like this <div data-src="/img/200x100.png">div> depending on what size fits the screen Is is okay for SEO? Or do we also need a fall back that doesn't use javascript? Thanks

Crawl errors which ones should i sort out
Hi, just had my website updated to joomla 3.0 and i have around 4000 urls not found. now i have been told i need to redirect these but i would just like to check on here to make sure i am doing the right thing and the advice i have been given is not correct. I have been told these errors are the reason for the drop in rankings. I need to know if i should redirect all of these 4,000 urls or only the ones that are being linked to from outside of the site. I think about 3,000 of these have no links from outside of the site, but if i do not redirect them all then i am going to keep getting the error messages. around 2,000 of these url not found are from the last time we updated the site which was a couple of years ago and i thought they would have died off now. any advice on what i should do would be great

Effective use of hReview
Hi fellow Mozzers! I am just in the process of adding various reviews to our site (a design agency), but I wanted to use the ratings in different ways depending on the page. So for the home page and the services (branding, POS, direct mail etc) I wanted to aggregate relevant reviews (giving us an average of all reviews for the home page, an average of ratings from all brand projects and so on). Then, I wanted to put specific reviews on our portfolio pages, so the review relates specifically to that project. This is the easiest to do as the hReview generator is geared up for reviews that come from one source, but I can't find a way of aggregating the star ratings to make an average rating rich snippet. Anyone know where I can get the coding for this? Thanks in advance! Nick.

Wildly different topics on one domain? (hobby blogger)
Hello Mozzers, Let's say I have a lot of knowledge about a range of different subjects, for example: bicycle maintenance wildlife photography tennis racket re-stringing brewing beer windsurfing holidays I would like to share all of my knowledge in blog format with lots of good content, instructions, videos etc. What is the best way to set up my blogging empire?!... a) Use separate domains for each subject: www.BRANDbicyclemaintenance.com, www.BRANDbrewingbeer.com b) Use one brand domain with sub directories: www.BRAND.com/bicycle-maintenance/, www.BRAND.com/brewing-beer/ b) Use sub-domains: bicyclemaintenance.BRAND.com, brewingbeer.BRAND.com (I would like to achieve good rankings & traffic in order to generate a small income from these sites)

Should Canonical URLs be used in Wordpress?
Wordpress offers Canonical URLs in the "All in one SEO" settings. I know that canonical tags for page content will cause the search engine to ignore the content, but I don't understand this setting in Wordpress. The Canonical URLs box for my blog had been checked until a couple weeks ago. I unchecked it (removing the canonical tag) and now I have about 300 duplicate content pages acccording to my SEOMoz reports. It appears that it's just the blog tag in the url now that is causing the confusion. Here's an example of the same url with two tags: http://www.rmtracking.com/blog/tag/aclu/ http://www.rmtracking.com/blog/tag/rfid/ Should I activate the canonical URL setting in Wordpress again. If not, how can I fix this? Your assistance is greatly appreciated. Regards, Brad
