Can you see if you have a penalty / downgrading for a keyword stuffed title tag ?
-
We’ve recently seen a gradual drop in organic listings for a site, the site has according to OSE the highest stats when compared to all its competitors.
Im beginning to think the site may be being penalised for an unnatural title tag. The title tag for the site is as follows :
[Service] [City] - [Company Name] - [Neighborhood] - West [City]
An example of the above <title>pattern would be :</p> <p><strong>Garden Design London - Acme Design - Chelsea - West London </strong></p> <p>The other sites that are outranking this site have title tags like :</p> <ul> <li dir="ltr"> <p dir="ltr"><span data-mce-mark="1">#1 (INDUSTRY SITE)</span></p> </li> </ul> <ul> <li dir="ltr"> <p dir="ltr">#2 James Davidson Design, London</p> </li> </ul> <ul> <li dir="ltr"> <p dir="ltr">#3 Jane Smith : Luxury Garden Design | London | Garden Landscaping</p> </li> <li dir="ltr"> <p dir="ltr">#4 Garden Designers London: BWI London Luxury Garden Design …</p> </li> <li dir="ltr"> <p dir="ltr">#5 (NATIONAL NEWSPAPER ARTICLE)</p> </li> <li dir="ltr"> <p dir="ltr">#6 Keers | High End Luxury Garden Designers in London</p> </li> <li dir="ltr"> <p dir="ltr">#7 Garden Design London - Acme Design - Chelsea - West London (The site in question)</p> </li> <li dir="ltr"> <p dir="ltr">#8 Sarah Franklin | Luxury Garden Design | London</p> </li> </ul> <p> </p> <p>Looking down the list they all seem to be using less keyword stuffed <title> tags than our the site sitting in #7. Bearing in mind that the site in #7 out ranks in terms of stats all other sites apart from #1 and #4 (which aren't competitors) in OSE</p> <p>Is it possible to if the site in #7 was given a penalty for the <title> tag ?</p> <p><br />(please note that the <title> tags ive listed above are representative of what the other sites are using, but ive changed the service and city to obfuscate the sites)</p></title>
-
I'm not sure if Eric meant more than the title tags, but personally I'd start with that.
-
Thanks eric, just to be clear when you say : "title tag (and updating the page)" do you mean updating the onpage content (eg. H1,
text etc) at the same time ?
-
Looking down the list they all seem to be using less keyword stuffed <title>tags than our the site sitting in #7</p> <p>If that's the case, then you should update your title tag(s), one page at a time, and then wait a few days after you update each one. You may see changes to rankings. It's worth testing. If you lose rankings, which I don't think you will, then you can always switch the title tag(s) back.</p> <p>But just updating the title tag (and updating the page) should give you a boost.</p></title>

Keywords local and national
Hello everyone. I asked a similar question but still find myself a bit confused. I am a magician who is trying to improve my web presence. I found a list of keywords which I will list below. The results read from left to right the search results in the United States, and in Ohio ( where I am from). I found these results using google planner. Magician 14800 390 Magicians 5400 170 Corporate Magician 170 10 Comedy Magician 140 10 Here is my question. Lets use the word Magician as an example. I see that there are 390 results in Ohio for the search term Magician. Would I want to key the phrase "magician" or "Ohio Magician". How does google work with this? If I key just the word "magician" and someone in Ohio google searches for Ohio Magicians or something similar, will it detect their location and put me on there radar? When I key in " Ohio Magician" in the planner the results that come back are 0 or less than 10. I'm curious if google works on location and if I'm wasting my time keying in all of these cities that are showing no results. I began targeting "Cleveland Magician" "Columbus Magician" etc. Should I just stick with the main term Magician?

Anyone want to test out my keyword research theory?
Hi all, I'm relatively new here but not new to the world of SEO / SEM. Over the years I've loved using SEOmoz and other tools but of course have found certain limitations with respect to how I like to work. That's the case with any tool / service. So over the years I've put together a keyword research / competitor analysis process that has worked well for me and I'm wondering if it might also work for others. I've spent the last 15 years of my life as a director of a range of companies, mainly in printing but also in systems development, marketing, etc. I spent a large percentage of my time developing systems and tools to help me with my search engine marketing. I've now sold all my companies and I'm semi-retired, somewhat bored, and would love it if I can assist others with the process I've used over the years. I'm curious to know whether SEM professionals agree with the way my system ranks search terms from "best" to "worst". If you're interested in testing this process and telling me if you think the resulting list of search terms that I come up with for your website is "spot on", "not bad" or "horrible!", then please read on. My key motivation here is to educate myself as well as others. I'm not charging for any of this... If you give me your website URL, your top 5 competitors and your top 5 search terms, I will return to you: a complete list of search terms including "niche" and longtail search terms you can then... really easily filter out irrelevant search terms, thus creating a list of negative keywords, ready to import into your Adwords campaign. easily group your search terms in "education" and "purchase" search terms so I can analyse these two groups of keywords separately see which words are used most often across all the search terms so you can easily create keyword specific Ad Groups in your Adwords campaign. You can tell me which options you prefer: broad match, "phrase match" or [exact match] when getting search engine results specify any country you want the SERP results for, or even any city. I will then: do all the keyword research, getting the latest (live) Google SERP results combine all competitor metrics (page rank, domain age, juice links, etc) and search term information (search volume, CPC, search term length, etc) together to give you a list of search terms ranked from "best" to "worst" do the same for both organic search terms and paid (Adwords) search terms do the same for both direct search terms and niche search terms take into account "word count" (number of words in a search term) as longtail keywords generally higher-converting search terms And you can adjust things to change how the keywords are ranked: specify "thresholds". eg; you can ignore the really competitive search terms, or ignore the really short search terms specify "weightings". eg; you can put a greater emphasis on search term length, or a lesser emphasis on cost per click As a result of the keyword analysis, it'll also show you who your organic and adwords competitors are based on all keywords, or just your top ranked ("best") keywords. In that competitor data you can see: which paid ads appear at the top, side AND bottom of the results page which organic results are shopping, image, video, and local results all the metrics for each competitor (page rank, domain age, juice links, etc) All of this is is handled in a simple web interface that I threw together recently. It's really simple, merely asking for your site and preferences and then an interface to view / sort the results. Interested?

I'd like to hear from any SEM professionals who want to test this process. Once I have your basic details, I can get a keyword list together simply (using my internal process / software) and then you need to do some basic sorting, particularly if your search terms are in an industry that I know nothing about. Your input will be required. From there, give me 24-48 hours and I'll return 2 lists of search terms: "organic", and "Adwords". I'd love to hear your opinion about the relevance of the search term lists. I hope it will also spark some interesting discussion and hopefully help people learn a bit more about keyword / competitor research. If you're interested, please shoot me a private message letting me know why you'd be a good candidate to test this system. I really do want people who are well versed in search engine marketing. So please include a basic "resume" about who you are. If you have an SEM company and that's your main career focus then I definitely want to hear from you. Adam0 -
Slight keyword variation domain name
I have recently changed a clients domain name from a long (23 characters) to a shorter domain name that has a keyword plus a single character variation. For example and without revealing the clients real domain name, let say they are in housing. Ithe first letter in the company name is "p" so i created the doamin name as www.phousing.com It has only been two days since i submitted the new domain name and did a 301 redirect to the new page. When i do a google search i get back the result: housing.com and "did you mean housing.com Will this domain name cause me problems? Any input is greatly appreciated!

Static Html Pages V/s Wordpress - For open content pages?
Hi there. I am worried a bit about static html pages or wordpress as an instance to write down open page content for our website. We are a product based website - primarily Saas based product. But with time we have seen that if we write more content people will be able to find us better,. Earlier our blog resided on blog.example.com now we are moving it to example.com/blog/ Issues - I really want to know that I need to generate lots of fresh content so I am using wordpress as the blog medium and content generation medium too. Basically the wordpress instance will be a content generated pages. I can also have static html page based content but then our content writers will always have to take the help of develoeprs to publish it to our sites. Whats the best way to go about this keeping SEO really crucial in mind? Thanks for your time and help!

Keywords and Getting Started with them to the top of the Search Engines
We are an online Saas Based startup. Strongly 70% of our daily users come directly to us since they know us by the url . Now there these 30% who scout for software's like ours online. Get to us by some hook or crook and then maybe end up giving the trial a shot. Our Main site is only of say 5-6 pages. These pages have basic info about our product , pricing and contact etc. What I wish to understand is that when one says" getting those keywords to the top of the engines rankings" who do you mean by these - I presume one means that get the keywords you want to compete for and then push in "Adwords" or better content pages? So If I want to rank well - then my websites should have good content pages you mean? Is that correct-? That means now I have to write good content on those keywords or around those keywords- without that there is no hope to come on good on engines right? Correct me here if I sway away from the actual meaning. Next I wish to have campaigns setup in google adwords keeping in mind those competitive keywords - here again does content on my website play a role? If I have no content and then have google adwords setup does that help? Please advice How long before I add good content pages and expect them to show up in my analytics etc? Thanks

Best Way to Consolidate Domains/Rankings After Purchase of Competitor
One of my customers is buying a competitor. The competitor has a site that usually ranks just 1-2 spots below the main site that we manage for them (our site has been up for about a year, and their's is 15-years old). I am wondering what is the best way to consolidate the rankings/websites to take advantage of the purchase of the competitor's web assets. I would love to leave both sites up and just get 2 top-25 links to our products, but with no more marketing being done under the competitor's name, I assume their rankings will degrade. Would a basic 301 re-direct on a page-by-page basis be enough to 'steal' all of the juice their domain name/site has built? Is there some other method of using an older domain to boost the rankings of a newer one (I am assuming they only rank as well as we do because of how long they've been active - all of our metrics are better than theirs across the board). Thanks for any help/advice the community here can provide!

Can anyone suggest how they're #1
Hi, I'm really struggling to see how these guys are number one on google (from the UK) when searching for "picture framers york" Their SEOMOZ on page grading for the term is an F, so on site SEO is minimal if any. Their backlinks are almost nonexistant, take a look at the competition report (attached) through market samurai. Everything I thought I understand about SEO is currently being turned on its head because with the information available, they shouldn't be there. I thought maybe its the proximity to 'York' center, but they aren't that close to be honest. So any advice greatly appreciated as to why they are #1 so I know what it is I can do as an SEO. Thanks, Dave samurai.png
