Site deindexed after HTTPS migration + possible penalty due to spammy links

Hi all, we've recently migrated a site from http to https and saw the majority of pages drop out of the index.
One of the most extreme deindexation problems I've ever seen, but there doesn't appear to be anything obvious on-page which is causing the issue. (Unless I've missed something - please tell me if I have!)
I had initially discounted any off-page issues due to the lack of a manual action in SC, however after looking into their link profile I spotted 100 spammy porn .xyz sites all linking (see example image).
Didn't appear to be any historic disavow files uploaded in the non https SC accounts.
Any on-page suggestions, or just play the waiting game with the new disavow file?

It's interesting that when I do a simple site:search in Google none of the main pages of your website are appearing. Most of the search results are either archives or comments. Typically, I've seen this kind of thing happen when something goes wrong in the redirects or a site is penalized.
It looks like the big dip in indexation didn't occur until about August. I would think that if you pulled the trigger in June, pages would start dropping out of the index much sooner.
In this case, your theory about a possible penalization might be right. I'd be interested to see what happens once Google considers the disavow file (unfortunately, that will take some time).
Does anyone else have any input or possible reasons why pages on this site have dropped out of the index so quickly?

Thanks for your input. I've answered your questions below.
- How long ago did you switch to https? - 21st June
- Have you submitted both non-www and www versions of the https site to Google Search Console (GSC)? - Yes
- Have you kept the http versions of your website in GSC? - Yes
- From the looks of it, your sitemap has been updated to reflect the https pages. Have you submitted the updated sitemap to GSC? - Yes - Submitted pages are not matching Indexed pages
- Are there any sitemap errors appearing in GSC? Any other errors? No Sitemap Errors. some 404ing pages.
- Could you attach a screenshot of the indexation rate on both https and http versions of the site from GSC?
- Could you confirm that all redirects were done 1-to-1 and properly redirected? (301s and not 302s) - Confirmed - all tools are reporting 200 status after hitting the 301.
We are still waiting to see some results from submitting the disavow file. So far, no positive movement.

Hi there,
There could be a lot of reasons why certain pages of your website are dropping out of your index. Could you answer the following questions to help us narrow down the possible cause?
- How long ago did you switch to https?
- Have you submitted both non-www and www versions of the https site to Google Search Console (GSC)?
- Have you kept the http versions of your website in GSC?
- From the looks of it, your sitemap has been updated to reflect the https pages. Have you submitted the updated sitemap to GSC?
- Are there any sitemap errors appearing in GSC? Any other errors?
- Could you attach a screenshot of the indexation rate on both https and http versions of the site from GSC?
- Could you confirm that all redirects were done 1-to-1 and properly redirected? (301s and not 302s)
Some things that we could rule out:
- It looks like the site isn't using noindex tags in a way that would cause deindexing
- It looks like the robots.txt file isn't disallowing any important paths that would cause deindexation
- The http version of the www and non-www pages redirects to the www, https version of the site which is good
- Canonicals seem to be updated and pointing to the https version of the site
Sorry for all of the questions, I just want to make sure and rule out possible causes to focus in on what the issue could be.

what information do you seen in search console?
Assuming that you have already tested all of your old URL's and the redirection paths points correctly to the new URLs, does Google Search console indicates any problems with the number of URLs submitted to it?
canoncals? are they in use? pointing to the correct version of the site?

I need help on how best to do a complicated site migration. Replacing certain pages with all new content and tools, and keeping the same URL's. The rest just need to disappear safely. Somehow.
I'm completely rebranding a website but keeping the same domain. All content will be replaced and it will use a different theme and mostly new plugins. I've been building the new site as a different site in Dev mode on WPEngine. This means it currently has a made-up domain that needs to replace the current site. I know I need to somehow redirect the content from the old version of the site. But I'm never going to use that content again. (I could transfer it to be a Dev site for the current domain and automatically replace it with the click of a button - just as another option.) What's the best way to replace blahblah.com with a completely new blahblah.com if I'm not using any of the old content? There are only about 4 URL'st, such as blahblah.com/contact hat will remain the same - with all content replaced. There are about 100 URL's that will no longer be in use or have any part of them ever used again. Can this be done safely?

Rankings drop after https migration [Need urgent help]
hey hi guys, i have lost all my organic traffic and in need of urgent help. Plz i need all your SEO expertise. My website is: makemoneyadultcontent.com (before judging me, let me tell you that i have been in adult industry for almost 7 years now and hence this blog was a way to pass my knowledge to everyone who is looking for it) Recently i saw that moving to HTTPS will benefit my site. I did not knew much about technical details of moving to https. My hosting was on siteground, and they have a button which you can press and your website will then be served through https. So i did that. Nothing else was done. this was done on 13th or 14th of june For the next few weeks here is my analytics (image attached) : As you can see the traffic fluctuated and finally i lost everything on 29th june. When i researched more, i found out that you need to follow many steps in order to move to HTTPS. So i followed this guide and completed all the steps: https://www.keycdn.com/blog/http-to-https/ (also checked many other guides and tried to complete all the steps mentioned) Everyone said that the rankings will recover in one week, but now it has been more than 17 days and still the rankings have not improved. My articles are indexed as i can see it using site:makemoneyadultcontent.com but none of them are ranking for the keywords that i was ranking earlier. i have submitted the sitemap in google webmaster and around 166 (out of 218) pages are indexed. Our site is on a secure server (https) will a link to http:// be of less value?
Our site is hosted on a secure network (I.E. Our web address is - https://www.workbooks.com). Will a backlink pointing to: http://www.workbooks.com provide less value than a link pointing to: https://www.workbooks.com ? Many thanks, Sam

Do links to PDF's on my site pass "link juice"?
Hi, I have recently started a project on one of my sites, working with a branch of the U.S. government, where I will be hosting and publishing some of their PDF documents for free for people to use. The great SEO side of this is that they link to my site. The thing is, they are linking directly to the PDF files themselves, not the page with the link to the PDF files. So my question is, does that give me any SEO benefit? While the PDF is hosted on my site, there are no links in it that would allow a spider to start from the PDF and crawl the rest of my site. So do I get any benefit from these great links? If not, does anybody have any suggestions on how I could get credit for them. Keep in mind that editing the PDF's are not allowed by the government. Do 404 Pages from Broken Links Still Pass Link Equity?
Hi everyone, I've searched the Q&A section, and also Google, for about the past hour and couldn't find a clear answer on this. When inbound links point to a page that no longer exists, thus producing a 404 Error Page, is link equity/domain authority lost? We are migrating a large eCommerce website and have hundreds of pages with little to no traffic that have legacy 301 redirects pointing to their URLs. I'm trying to decide how necessary it is to keep these redirects. I'm not concerned about the page authority of the pages with little traffic...I'm concerned about overall domain authority of the site since that certainly plays a role in how the site ranks overall in Google (especially pages with no links pointing to them...perfect example is Amazon...thousands of pages with no external links that rank #1 in Google for their product name). Anyone have a clear answer? Thanks!

Redirect micro-niche site to bigger niche site?
I have a micro niche site that performs reasonably well (page 1 at least) for it's main keywords. It is an exact match domain. To save the ongoing maintenance of a site that gets less than 10 visitors a day, I was thinking of redirecting this micro niche site to a bigger site (a niche site that the micro niche fits into, if that makes sense!) Would I lose rankings because of the power that the EMD provided? Would it be better keeping it there for the backlink it provides to the bigger site (although on the same C Class IP)

Sitewide blog link and Article links
Hi Guys I just wanted to give you all a heads up on something I adjusted recently that worked really well and wanted to ask for your own experiences on this. 1. We have a blog that adds regular content and within the blog we link from the keyword we are targeting. Standard stuff right ! We were struggling for movement on a keyword so I removed the links from the articles and added a link on the site wide blogroll. The link on the blogroll included the keyword but was a longer descriptive link. Low and behold we got a first page listing when the changed it.The change in ranking was made a few days later. I have always been given the impression that site wide isn't that great ? So explain this one . Of course there are many other factors etc 🙂 What are your experiences and thoughts on what happened here ?
