When moving a site from HTTP to HTTPS, will i lose value from the 301 redirect?
-
I am looking at moving my site from HTTP to full HTTPS, so i will 301 redirect any HTTP requests to their HTTPS counterpart.
All my pages in the Google index are HTTP, so will that 301 redirect reduce the value of the pages?
Cheers

Sean and Logan are right... if you properly redirect http URLs to https URLs on your site, you generally should not lose any search engine rankings as long as you're moving (and redirecting) on the same domain name.
A couple of things to watch out for, though, that can cause a site to lose rankings if not done properly:
-
verify all versions of the site in Google Search Console (http://, http://www, https:// and https://www)
-
crawl your own site and change ALL URLs on the site, even references to image files and external files such as .js files, if you're using absolute and not relative URLs.
-
set up only one redirect (multiple redirects can cause issues). Make sure the site doesn't redirect from http:// to http://www and then from http://www to https://www..
-
make sure your SSL certificate is set up properly (it's easy to screw it up so it gives errors if not set up properly).

Hi Neil,
Earlier this year, Google announced they will not discount a page's value due to a HTTP>HTTPS redirect. You can read more on that Q&A with John Mueller here.
I'd also recommend reading this post that covers everything you need to know about a secure migration as it pertains to SEO: https://moz.com/blog/seo-tips-https-ssl

Hey Neil,
Historically, each redirect chain caused a link to lose a small portion of equity.
A few weeks ago, Google announced that this is no longer the case and 301 redirects DON'T lose any equity any longer. This update now means that domain level redirects won't result in equity loss - if anything, it's best practice to ensure your URLs are HTTPS.
You can check out the blog here - https://moz.com/blog/301-redirection-rules-for-seo
All the best,
Sean

301 Redirects for Multiple Language Sites in htaccess File
Hi everyone, I have a site on a subdomain that has multiple languages set up at the domain level: https://mysite.site.com, https://mysite.site.fr , https://mysite.site.es , https://mysite.site.de , etc. We are migrating to a new subdomain and I am trying to create 301 redirects within the htaccess file, but I am a bit lost on how to do this as it seems you have to go from a relative url to an absolute - which would be fine if I was only doing this for the english site, but I'm not. It doesn't seem like I can go from absolute url to an absolute url - but I could be wrong. I am new to editing the htaccess file - so I could definitely use some advice here. Thanks.

301 redirecting to anchor points
A client has just given me a list of redirect URLs as requested of them. However, they're wanting to redirect a bunch of pages to various anchor points within the same page. For example: /pages/about might redirect to: /pages/our-story#our-mission And: /pages/history might redirect to: /pages/our-story#history Is there any problem with this? I've never seen or been asked to redirect like this before.

If you do 302 redirect then change to 301 redirect do you lose all link juice?
Hello everyone, I was wondering if you could help me with understanding the following story: A website has been moved from its HTTP version to a HTTPS version. The SEO manager has advised developers that they needed to do 301 redirects. However, in the end, 302 redirects have been put in place instead. Now, 301s should be put in place ASAP. The million dollar question is: has the website lost all of its link juice already given the nature of the redirects? Also, does it depend on whether Google has indexed the new 302 pages or does it depend on something else? Many thanks!

301 entire site
Is there a good 301 code snippet to change just the root domain but keep the ending extensions? I just bid on a domain that I think would be much better for me moving forward, but do not want to have to try going through thousands of pages to do their 301 individually My site is almost 4 yrs old. Well established and has a large fanbase. Several of our social networks are under the name of the new branded domain, hence part of the desire to switch.

301 Redirect - What happens to backlinks
Hello... One of my sites is losing rankings in G. I received the webmaster notification of unnatural links... My question is, should i do a 301 redirect of every page on my site to a new domain? If so, do the backlinks (which i believe are causing my rankings to drop) carry over? How about the good backlinks? Also, what would happen to the rankings i currently have on page 1? Thanks

Have a problem with our home page. Is temporary 301 redirect an option?
Hey Mozers, I discovered this morning that the home page for my website is rendering fine in Chrome and Firefox, but very poorly in IE. My analytics show that over 50% of my visitors are using IE. As a result of the problem, IE has a bounce rate 32% higher than other browsers. I'm not a web developer and I'm fairly new to SEO, so I'm guessing that it's going to take me at least a couple days to get it fixed. In the meantime, I was considering doing a 301 redirect from the home page to the largest category page in hopes of keeping some of the IE users from bouncing while I get the home page sorted out. Would there be any long term negative effects from this once I get the page sorted out and take the 301 off it? Are there any other solutions that would be better? Thanks for the help!
