Open Site Explorer - Top Pages that don't exist / result of a hack(?)
-
Hi all,
Last year, a website I monitor, got hacked, or infected with malware, I’m not sure which.
The result that I got to see is 100’s of ‘not found’ entries in Google Search Console / Crawl Errors for non-existent pages relating to / variations of ‘Canada Goose’. And also, there's a couple of such links showing up in SERPs. Here’s an example of the page URLs:
ourdomain.com/canadagoose.php ourdomain.com/replicacanadagoose.php
I looked for advice on the webmaster forums, and was recommended to just keep marking them as ‘fixed’ in the console. Sooner or later they’ll disappear. Still, a year after, they appear.
I’ve just signed up for a Moz trail and, in Open Site Explorer->Top Pages, the top 2-5 pages are relating to these non-existent pages: URLs that are the result of this ‘canada goose’ spam attack. The non-existent pages each have around 10 Linking Root Domains, with around 50 Inbound Links.
My question is: Is there a more direct action I should take here? For example, informing Google of the offending domains with these backlinks.
Any thoughts appreciated! Many thanks

Hi Mª Verónica B
That's great, Many thanks for the confirmation.
All the best,
Colin

Hi Colin,
If the backlinks/inbound links are spam, yes upload a disavow file, only related to those.
If multiple ghost pages in WordPress due to erased hacked pages, yes the new hidden page with all the above instructions, only related to the spam pages.
All the best,Mª Verónica B.

Thanks again Mª Veronica for taking the time to respond.
Ok, if i understand correctly, as those spam / 'canadagoose' related backlinks do indeed exist* , a disavow file for google would be the thing to do here?
There was indeed a hacking, which happened before i came along, which is reported in Google Search Console. And there are 100's of 'canadagoose' related crawl errors with a response code of 404 that just keep coming back. It looks like those pages did indeed once exist, and must have been deleted by the website developers. So the 'empty page' technique would apply here?
*It seems to me that the 'canadagoose' pages that have apparently since been deleted , and the backlinks linking to those 'ghost' pages, are all part of the hack:
- hack website, create 'canadagoose' pages
- link to 'canadagoose' pages from other websites
Many thanks,
Colin

Hi Colin,
Not exactly!
We are not talking about backlinks. Backlinks come from other websites, therefore we cannot control them, except upload a disavow file for Google.
That is quite different. We are talking about the hundred of "ghosts" of deleted pages - we deleted them, because our website was hacked.
At the time we deleted all those, that is not enough.
Crawlers will "see" 330 or more pages with 404 status!
That is awful for SEO, due to the crawlers/Google "understands" that you do not care about user experience, means you have so many erased pages that if somebody goes there, there will be nothing.1.- Moz Top Pages to find out all the spam pages and then Google, of course to be sure.
2.- A new page, not completely empty. Should say something like
"We are truly sorry... Thanks."
This is for the crawlers, it is supposed no human knows about those spam pages. Except the one that hacked your website.
3.- Redirect all spam pages in the list, with a 301 - a permanent redirect to the noindex/nofollow page you just created.
4:- Verify, copy and past from the list into the navigator and check if goes to the new page, also verify the page status with Moz bar.Thanks. Good luck,
Mª Verónica

Many thanks for your response Mª Veronica B, very helpful.
I've never used the disavow backlinks tool in Google Search Console. I would have assumed this is the ideal scenario to use it to disavow _specific _backlinks (not _all _backlinks). But instead what you're suggesting is:
-
create an empty / hidden (WordPress) Page, and make it noindex / nofollow
-
Get a list of all spam backlinks from Google Search Console
-
Redirect all spam backlinks in the list to the empty noindex / nofollow page
This would never have occurred to me, I'm going to do this right now.
Again, many thanks!
Colin

Hi,
It seems that the website has a similar situation as the one that I shared before.
Although, I had to take immediate action due to it was creating a very serious problem by sending malicious signals to all the crawlers.
Also, I discovered the issue by using the same Moz feature.
Thanks Moz!https://moz.com/community/q/more-than-450-pages-created-by-a-hacker
In my experience, by sending all those pages to a new hidden page, using a 301 and the noindex and nofollow directives. It is, somehow, sending the right signals to the crawlers of Google and the other search engines.
Let's say strongly informing all the crawlers, that those spam pages/404 are not relevant nor interesting for your website.
Andy's response agrees that is the best solution. Also, he recommends the Wordfence plugin for WordPress as a preventive measure to avoid further issues.
Good luck!

My keywords aren't performing for my Umbraco site
A client of mine has just redesigned their site which was pretty small (homepage, about us page and contact us page) and now it includes homepage, about us page, 3 services pages, 5 blog posts and a contact us page. their domain authority is 5, so that gives you an idea of their size. We updated their key pages with keyword optimised content and added the keyword to their meta title and meta description. they're in the process of adding the alt tags and also they need to enable meta tags for the blog posts. Everything is quite in the process at the moment and their organic traffic is low. But I believe that some of the keywords should start moving places for the pages that have been optimised and they haven't. Is there any reason for this? I believe the services pages which have meta tags should have started ranking at least in very low position for the selected keywords. Is there something I'm missing? Thank you!

Google Mobile site crawl returns poorer results on 100% responsive site
Has anyone experienced an issue where Google Mobile site crawl returns poorer results than their Desktop site crawl on a 100% responsive website that passes all Google Mobile tests?

What do you think about this links? Toxic or don't? disavow?
Hi, we are now involved in a google penalty issue (artificial links – global – all links). We were very surprised, cause we only have 300 links more less, and most of those links are from stats sites, some are malware (we are trying to fight against that), and other ones are article portals. We have created a spreadsheet with the links and we have analyzed them using Link Detox. Now we are sending emails, so that they can be removed, or disavow the links what happen is that we have very few links, and in 99% of then we have done nothing to create that link. We have doubts about what to do with some kind of links. We are not sure them to be bad. We would appreciate your opinion. We should talk about two types: Domain stats links Article portals Automatically generated content site I would like to know if we should remove those links or disavow them These are examples Anygator.com. We have 57 links coming from this portal. Linkdetox says this portal is not dangerous http://es.anygator.com/articulo/arranca-la-migracion-de-hotmail-a-outlook__343483 more examples (stats or similar) www.mxwebsite.com/worth/crearcorreoelectronico.es/ and from that website we have 10 links in wmt, but only one works. What do you do on those cases? Do you mark that link as a removed one? And these other examples… what do you think about them? More stats sites: http://alestat.com/www,crearcorreoelectronico.es.html http://www.statscrop.com/www/crearcorreoelectronico.es Automated generated content examples http://mrwhatis.net/como-checo-mi-correo-electronico-yaho.html http://www.askives.com/abrir-correo-electronico-gmail.html At first, we began trying to delete all links, but… those links are not artificial, we have not created them, google should know those sites. What would you do with those sites? Your advices would be very appreciated. Thanks 😄

How can I see all the pages google has indexed for my site?
Hi mozers, In WMT google says total indexed pages = 5080. If I do a site:domain.com commard it says 6080 results. But I've only got 2000 pages in my site that should be indexed. So I would like to see all the pages they have indexed so I can consider noindexing them or 404ing them. Many thanks, Julian.

Is there anyway to recover my site's rankings?
My site has been top 3 for 'speed dating' on Google.co.uk since about 2003 and it went to below top 50 for a lot of it's main keywords shortly after 27 Oct 2012. I did a re-submission request and was told there was 'no manual spam action'. My conclusions is I was dropped by Google because of poor quality links I've gained over 10+ years. I have a Domain Authority of 40, a regular blog http://bit.ly/oKyi88, a KLOUT of 42, user reviews and quality content. Since Oct 2012 I've done some technical improvements and managed to get a few questionable links removed. I've continued blogging reguarly and got more active on Twitter. I've seen no improvement and my traffic is 80% down on last year. It would be great to be able to produce content that others want to link to but I've not had much success from that in over 10 years of trying and I've not seen many others in my sector, with small budgets having much success. Is there anything I can do to regain favour with Google?

Traffic drop off and page isn't indexed
In the last couple weeks my impressiona and clicks have dropped off to about half what it used to be. I am wondering if Google is punishing me for something... I also added two new pages to my site in the first week of June and they still aren't indexed. In the past it seemed like new pages would be indexed in a couple days. Is there any way to tell if Google is unhappy with my site? WMT shows 3 server errors, 3 Access denied, and 122 not found errors. Could those not found pages be killing me? Thanks for any advise, Greg www.AntiqueBanknotes.com

Is 404'ing a page enough to remove it from Google's index?
We set some pages to 404 status about 7 months ago, but they are still showing in Google's index (as 404's). Is there anything else I need to do to remove these?
