Google Analytics Campaign Tracking overriding each other
-
Howdy, fellow mozzers.
So, here is the situation:
Let's say someone comes to the website through Organic Google Search, and first thing they see is the banner on the website, on a click of which it takes you to a promotional landing page. I have this banner being tracked with GA campaigns. Now, here are my questions:
- If that user makes a purchase, which source / medium it will be assigned to? Organic/google or website/banner? (as far as i understand it assigns it to website/banner)
- If that's the case, is there way to find out afterwords where the website/banner sessions came initially from?
- If there is no such way, how shall i setup the tracking to be able to see wherre the initial visit to the website came from, yet also track how many people clicked on the banner and made a purchase?
Thanks

Essentially, ecommcerce tracking is a more deluxe, in-depth version of event tracking, Dmitrii.
You'll set both up, then use dashboards and reporting to integrate them. For example, you can start by using the Events report to look at all the visits that included a click on the banner, then review the purchase behaviour of those visits. For starters, that will give you the conversion rate of those who clicked on the banner, for example. You'll also be able to compare the sales behaviour of those who clicked on the banners vs those who didn't.
If you configure the label of the banner event to include the URL of the page it was clicked from, you'll even be able to assess which pages' banners provide the best sales, as another example.
Think of ecommerce tracking and event tracking working in concert with each other to show you both what happened before the sale (event tracking) and what happened during the sale (ecommcerce tracking.)
Make sense?

You are right, it can't be used for e-commerce tracking. So what you should do is make sure they can both be set up regardless of each other. Like Paul mentioned, it's incredibly dangerous to start using UTM campaign tracking for internal purposes. 99/100 it's not a good idea to do it like that and event tracking is able to help you out.

I see.
Now, as far as i know, the event tracking could be used for goal tracking, but not for ecommerce tracking, or am i wrong?
-
You're making a critical tracking error in this scenario, Dmitrii. You must NEVER use campaign tracking variables on internal links within your site. There aren't many absolutes in Analytics, but this is one of them.
When the visitor clicks on that banner under your current scenario, they are being registered as a completely new session with the new campaign-based referrer info. This does damage at two levels:
- It is artificially increasing your session count by a significant margin
- it is stripping the real source
Once this damage has been done, there's no way to recover the original referrer info for the purchaser.
Fortunately, there is a built-in system in Analytics to do what you want. For tracking actions that happen within your website, you need to use Event Tracking instead of campaign parameters. You will add an event tracking trigger to the banner clicks so that their clicks can be recorded within Analytics without polluting your other data. This tracking can be added in a number of ways including manually (using an onclick event) or the highly recommended method of integration though Google Tag Manager. This keeps the original source/medium of your visitors untouched, while adding the info about their banner click to the cllickstream.
This same event-tracking process should be added to all other major and minor conversion events on the site - form submissions, file downloads, page scroll depth, video views etc - so that you can truly track and understand the valuable actions visitors take within the site that aren't tracked with pageviews.
Hope that helps?
Paul

Google Analytics Not Properly Attributing Goals
My GA has been working fine for years and is now suddenly attributing 100% of my goals/conversions to a "referral" source. In this case "crm.zoho.com". (see attached url) Our contact form is a zoho CRM form. When prospect fills it out online, it dumps them to a thank-you page and the conversion is counted. That all works just fine, but it is not attributing the conversion to Organic or PPC or Direct as it was a month or so ago. I'm not sure if this may be the cause, but I was cleaning up GA about a month ago, deleting some filters I didn't think I needed any more. Thank you for your help. 9CRUx

Google Analytics direct traffic dropped by 50% after switching to https
Hi, everyone, have a little dilemma and was hoping to get some advice here. I recently installed a new SSL (3 months ago) to force our URL to start with https://. The site was earlier accessible through https:// and http:// prefix however now I have made it so that all urls are redirected to the correct https:// version. The problem is that direct traffic has dropped by more than 50% after implementing these changes and I can for the life of me figure out why. Why would the direct traffic drop all of sudden after making these changes? I am starting to suspect that the earlier data was inflated and that Google analytics was counting users coming from a http:// version of the URL to a https:// version of the URL was counted as direct traffic. Could that be it? Any other possible causes? Would really appreciate any guidance on this problem. Thanks

How to Analysis which category gives me more revenue from google analytic?
Hello Experts, For Ecommerce site we do have navigation path like Main Category - Subcategory - Products. That means Men as Main Category and then subcategory Cloths, shoes, bags then product in each subcategory. After implementing enhance ecommerce https://developers.google.com/tag-manager/enhanced-ecommerce#product-clicks I am getting this report - "Product Category (Enhanced E-commerce)" in Product Performance section. Now my query is my all products are linked with sub category i.e. cloths, shoes, bags etc so in Product Category (Enhanced E-commerce) I can see Revenue, transaction related to Cloths, shoes, bags etc but how to judge performance of Main categories like Men, Women, Children etc? Because google works with this method i think - name': productObj.name, // Name or ID is required.

Google Analytics - Adding a sub-domain
Hi I have a google analytics query.
Reporting & Analytics | | Niki_1
I have a main site with a google analytics tag and I have 2 forms that sit on a subdomain with a different GA code. As I would like to measure end to end tracking, I would like the same GA code on the subdomain. What is the best way for me to implement this? Would I need to make some changes to the GA code that sits on the main site or can I add the the GA code from the main site onto the subdomain? Thanks0 -
Google Analytics Organic Accuracy?
Hi, On a cool summers day, I was quenching my thirst for SEO Knowledge in the depths of Google analytics, When I stumbled upon a most troublesome sight. I was Browsing the data inside Acquisition->Keywords->Organic and comparing them to Acquisition->Search Engine Optimization->Landing Pages, to find the results quite questionable.. Since Keywords->Organic measure the visits from the organic results, and Search Engine Optimization->Landing Pages measures the clicks onto one of my landing pages from Google, I assumed they should be the same or very close, (besides Keywords->Organic having visits from other search engines) but they were not the same, as a matter of fact it was telling me that Keywords->Organic visits = 1,474, 27.19% of total(5,422) and Search Engine Optimization->Landing Pages, clicks = 1,548 154.80% of total (1000). Even worst the Search Engine Optimization -> Queries clicks = 1,123, 160.43% of total(700). I have been searching, and come up empty handed in the answer so does anyone know why Google is showing me different results and strange numbers that don't make sense? Any information is greatly appreciated?

Google Analytics Goals are not recording
Hello! I've set up Goals within Google Analytics and they aren't registering. I'm wondering if someone can review what I've set up to see if I've entered something wrong. I'm trying to track enrollments. Here's the site info: Enroll URL: http://www.careplusdentalplans.com/individuals/enroll-careplus/ Upon completion, the user goes to a Thank You page and our CMS generates a trailing URL parameter. For example: http://www.careplusdentalplans.com/index.php/individuals/enroll-careplus-thank-you/#123456789 My Goal info in GA: Goal URL: /individuals/enroll-careplus-thank-you/
Reporting & Analytics | | SmileMoreSEO
Match Type: Head Match (to disregard trailing URL parameter)
Goal Funnel: Step 1: /individuals/enroll-careplus/ I'm curious if the problem lies in either: The URL: Notice how the URL adds /index.php/ on the thank you page. In that case, should I enter the full URL in the Goal instead of the truncated URL? The Funnel: Is it necessary to show the initial Enroll page or if I'll see that in the Flow Visualization regardless? Thanks in advance for helping me out. Erik0 -
Transfer Google Analytics data from one user to another?
Long story short, two weeks of analytics data are stored on a different profile from the rest of the year's data. Is there a way to export all data from a date range, and then import it to another account? Thanks for your help.

How to Turn Google Analytics Into Your Own Rank Tracker Using Custom Variables
I followed the instructions here http://www.seomoz.org/blog/gettings-rankings-into-ga-using-custom-variables, but cannot see the report in Analytics under "Custom Variables". As I dont know JS syntax, I assume the code is wrong. I just added dohertyjf's code under my normal tracking code. Can someone tell me if and where the error is? | | Much obliged!
