Need help in de-indexing URL parameters in my website.
-
Hi,
Need some help.
So this is my website _https://www.memeraki.com/ _
If you hover over any of the products, there's a quick view option..that opens up a popup window of that product
That popup is triggered by this URL. _https://www.memeraki.com/products/never-alone?view=quick _
In the URL you can see the parameters "view=quick" which is infact responsible for the pop-up. The problem is that the google and even your Moz crawler is picking up this URL as a separate webpage, hence, resulting in crawl issues, like missing tags.
I've already used the webmaster tools to block the "view" parameter URLs in my website from indexing but it's not fixing the issue
Can someone please provide some insights as to how I can fix this? -
Hi Imran - Oh, that must be frustrating! Have you tried contacting the theme developer for support? You may also be able to get guidance in the Shopify forum, especially if you are using a more common theme.
-
Haven't found a feasible solution yet,. the code of the popup is not available to edit so the inserting manual canonical tag is not possible. Anybody has something else to offer?
-
Awesome. Good luck!
-
Okay I'll try and see if I can do that. It's a shopify based website so I don't have as much freedom of tweaking stuff. The pop-up came in-built with the theme. Will try and see if I can include the canonical link in the pop-up source code.
-
This is exactly my point, the view=quick version of the page needs a canonical pointing back to the proper version of the page. Yes, it's not a normal webpage but that is now search engines are viewing it because it's missing the tag.
This will signify to search engines that the 'view=quick' version of the page is a duplicate of the normal page and that it should not be ranked within search results.
-
You mean the never alone one?
As I said, that one is not actually a webpage, it's just a URL which triggers the popup.
If you check the URL without the parameter "view=quick" , you'll find a canonical tag in there.I've added the screenshots for HTML of our home page and that product page.
-
I've clicked on the link you mentioned above and there is no canonical on the page?
-
We've already added the canonical tags in the header section. Do you mean we have to this to each and every individual product page?
This is the script we've added : -
Hey there,
This is a funny issue that has been plagueing SEO for years - I find that the best fix is to ensure that canonicals are automatically added to query parameter versions of pages.
In this instance, I would ensure a canonical tag is added in the below format:
This would ensure that search engines understand the main page you want to rank and it encourages them not to rank these query parameter pages.
All the best,
Sean

Site-wide Canonical Rewrite Rule for Multiple Currency URL Parameters?
Hi Guys, I am currently working with an eCommerce site which has site-wide duplicate content caused by currency URL parameter variations. Example: https://www.marcb.com/ https://www.marcb.com/?setCurrencyId=3 https://www.marcb.com/?setCurrencyId=2 https://www.marcb.com/?setCurrencyId=1 My initial thought is to create a bunch of canonical tags which will pass on link equity to the core URL version. However I was wondering if there was a rule which could be implemented within the .htaccess file that will make the canonical site-wide without being so labour intensive. I also noticed that these URLs are being indexed in Google, so would it be worth setting a site-wide noindex to these variations also? Thanks

URLs with parameters + canonicals + meta robots
Hi Moz community! I'm posting a new question here as I couldn't find specific answer to the case I'm facing. Along with canonical tags, we are implementing meta robots on our pages (e-commerce website with thousands of pages). Most of the cases have been covered but I still have one unanswered case: our products are linked from list pages (mostly categories) but they almost always include a tracking parameter (ie /my-product.html?ref=xxx) products urls are secured with a canonical tag (referring only to the clean url /my-product.html) but what would be the best solution regarding the meta robots? For now we opted for a meta robot 'noindex, follow' for non canonical urls (so the ones unfortunately linked from our category/list pages), but I'm afraid that it could hurt our SEO (apparently no juice is given from URLs with a noindex robots), and even maybe prevent bots from crawling our website properly ... Would it be best to have no meta robots at all on these product urls with parameters? (we obviously can't have 'index, follow' when the canonical ref points to another url!). Thanks for your help!

Best solution to get mass URl's out the SE's index
Hi, I've got an issue where our web developers have made a mistake on our website by messing up some URL's . Because our site works dynamically IE the URL's generated on a page are relevant to the current URL it ment the problem URL linked out to more problem URL's - effectively replicating an entire website directory under problem URL's - this has caused tens of thousands of URL's in SE's indexes which shouldn't be there. So say for example the problem URL's are like www.mysite.com/incorrect-directory/folder1/page1/ It seems I can correct this by doing the following: 1/. Use Robots.txt to disallow access to /incorrect-directory/* 2/. 301 the urls like this:
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | James77
www.mysite.com/incorrect-directory/folder1/page1/
301 to:
www.mysite.com/correct-directory/folder1/page1/ 3/. 301 URL's to the root correct directory like this:
www.mysite.com/incorrect-directory/folder1/page1/
www.mysite.com/incorrect-directory/folder1/page2/
www.mysite.com/incorrect-directory/folder2/ 301 to:
www.mysite.com/correct-directory/ Which method do you think is the best solution? - I doubt there is any link juice benifit from 301'ing URL's as there shouldn't be any external links pointing to the wrong URL's.0
