Need help in de-indexing URL parameters in my website.
-
Hi,
Need some help.
So this is my website _https://www.memeraki.com/ _
If you hover over any of the products, there's a quick view option..that opens up a popup window of that product
That popup is triggered by this URL. _https://www.memeraki.com/products/never-alone?view=quick _
In the URL you can see the parameters "view=quick" which is infact responsible for the pop-up. The problem is that the google and even your Moz crawler is picking up this URL as a separate webpage, hence, resulting in crawl issues, like missing tags.
I've already used the webmaster tools to block the "view" parameter URLs in my website from indexing but it's not fixing the issue
Can someone please provide some insights as to how I can fix this? -
Hi Imran - Oh, that must be frustrating! Have you tried contacting the theme developer for support? You may also be able to get guidance in the Shopify forum, especially if you are using a more common theme.
-
Haven't found a feasible solution yet,. the code of the popup is not available to edit so the inserting manual canonical tag is not possible. Anybody has something else to offer?
-
Awesome. Good luck!
-
Okay I'll try and see if I can do that. It's a shopify based website so I don't have as much freedom of tweaking stuff. The pop-up came in-built with the theme. Will try and see if I can include the canonical link in the pop-up source code.
-
This is exactly my point, the view=quick version of the page needs a canonical pointing back to the proper version of the page. Yes, it's not a normal webpage but that is now search engines are viewing it because it's missing the tag.
This will signify to search engines that the 'view=quick' version of the page is a duplicate of the normal page and that it should not be ranked within search results.
-
You mean the never alone one?
As I said, that one is not actually a webpage, it's just a URL which triggers the popup.
If you check the URL without the parameter "view=quick" , you'll find a canonical tag in there.I've added the screenshots for HTML of our home page and that product page.
-
I've clicked on the link you mentioned above and there is no canonical on the page?
-
We've already added the canonical tags in the header section. Do you mean we have to this to each and every individual product page?
This is the script we've added : -
Hey there,
This is a funny issue that has been plagueing SEO for years - I find that the best fix is to ensure that canonicals are automatically added to query parameter versions of pages.
In this instance, I would ensure a canonical tag is added in the below format:
This would ensure that search engines understand the main page you want to rank and it encourages them not to rank these query parameter pages.
All the best,
Sean

Site-wide Canonical Rewrite Rule for Multiple Currency URL Parameters?
Hi Guys, I am currently working with an eCommerce site which has site-wide duplicate content caused by currency URL parameter variations. Example: https://www.marcb.com/ https://www.marcb.com/?setCurrencyId=3 https://www.marcb.com/?setCurrencyId=2 https://www.marcb.com/?setCurrencyId=1 My initial thought is to create a bunch of canonical tags which will pass on link equity to the core URL version. However I was wondering if there was a rule which could be implemented within the .htaccess file that will make the canonical site-wide without being so labour intensive. I also noticed that these URLs are being indexed in Google, so would it be worth setting a site-wide noindex to these variations also? Thanks

'?q=:new&sort=new' URL parameters help...
Hey guys, I have these types of URLs being crawled and picked up on by MOZ but they are not visible to my users. The URLs are all 'hidden' from users as they are basically category pages that have no stock, however MOZ is crawling them and I dont understand how they are getting picked up as 'duplicate content'. Anyone have any info on this? http://www.example.ch/de/example/marken/brand/make-up/c/Cat_Perso_Brand_3?q=:new&sort=new Even if I understood the technicality behind it then I could try and fix it if need be. Thanks Guys Kay

Development/Test Ecommerce Website Mistakenly Indexed
My question is - relatively speaking, how damaging to SEO is it to have BOTH your development/testing site and your live version indexed/crawled by Google and appearing in the SERPs? We just launched about a month ago, and made a change to the robots text on the development site without noticing ... which lead to it being indexed too.So now the ecommerce website is duplicated in Google ... each under different URLs of course (and on diff servers, DNS etc) We'll fix it right away ... and block crawlers to the development site. But again, may general question is what is the general damage to SEO ... if any ... created by this kind of mistake. My feeling is nothing significant

Website URL Structure - keyword targeting on homepage vs internal pages
I have developed a few websites before where the homepage contains the content for the keywords I was targeting. This has been reasonably successful as I have found it easy enough to get links to the homepage. I am considering a new site in a totally different industry that I am thinking about structuring like this: mybrand.com (not necessarily targeting any keywords) mybrand.com/important-keyword-1/ (definitely want to target) mybrand.com/important-keyword-2 (equally important as 1st keyword) There will be several (30-ish) other pages targeting keywords but they are not as significant as the two mentioned above, more so they are about publishing informative information. The two important keywords are quite different but industry related. My questions are: should I be careful targeting keywords away from the homepage when the homepage gets the most links? Would I be better off building 2 different websites where the keyword content is captured in the homepage? Thanks,

Index or not index Categories
We are using Yoast Seo plugin. On the main menu we have only categories which has consist of posts and one page. We have category with villas, category with villa hotels etc. Initially we set to index and include in the sitemap posts and excluded categories, but I guess it was not correct. Would be a better way to index and include categories in the sitemap and exclude the posts in order to avoid the duplicate? It somehow does not make sense for me, If the posts are excluded and the categories included, will not then be the categories empty for google? I guess I will get crazy of this. Somebody has perhaps more experiences with this?

Do UTM URL parameters hurt SEO backlink value?
Does www.example.com and www.example.com/?utm_source=Google&utm_medium=Press+Release&utm_campaign=Google have the same SEO backlink value? I would assume that Google knows the difference.
