Header Tag Question
-
While reviewing code on a site, I found the following:
<h1 class="<a class="attribute-value">logo</a>"> <a id="<a class="attribute-value">logo</a>" href="[http://siteexampleh1.com](view-source:http://dmbinc.com/)"><span>Example of most important content on this page- Companyspan>a> h1>
Is this the correct way to place code for an h1 tag? The content is cached within the page and is hidden to the viewer. The content that is assigned as the h1, is a logo. Majority of code I have been reviewing does not use this setup. The code would instead read as (
This is heading 1
). Can anyone provide insights on this?
Thanks!

I agree with Garrett in that I would use the H1 tag to mark up a heading (e.g., an article title, not a link or image.) H1, H2, H3 tags (and so forth) are (textual) header tags, after all, by definition, and are meant to help crawlers understand how pages are organized. They are also very important in helping screen readers (often used by the visually impaired) understand how a page is organized. Not properly marking up pages can result in a very frustrating, and confusing experience for those who rely on screen readers to navigate the web. The WC3 explains how to mark up textual content in HTML very well.
While including the keyword in the H1 tag has little, if any value in terms of SEO, I think including it is good for usability -- for all users, not just those that use screen readers. When a user performs a keyword search, the search results show the keyword in the page titles. I think it confirms (for the user) that they are on the correct page (and have found what they are looking for) when one of the first things they see after clicking through to a page (from a search result) is a prominent headline containing the keyword in it.

You need the H1 to be visible for it to "count" - sure, you've got text here, but it's being hidden by the CSS, which is replacing that text with your image file.
You'd be much better off with a visible H1 headline containing text AND with your logo image being embedded with a standard image embed tag that ALSO has alt text for that image.

Hmmmm.
I wouldn't make an H1 tag a logo. I also wouldn't make the h1 tag a link. The h1 tag is one of the most important on page factors for targeting a keyword.
My suggestion would be to follow the example you gave in the paragraph,
This is a heading
Hope this helps,

Controlling PageRank Flow Question
One of my competitors rose above me drastically, above everyone actually. His website has a sidebar on the homepage, but when you click a post it leads to a full width page of his content - with no sidebar at all. The only button on page is HOME. My site has the sidebar on all pages, meaning juice is flowing around in all directions. Would it be smarter for me to remove my sidebar as well? In theory, this would create a boost in rankings correct?

Duplicate video content question
This is really two questions in one. 1. If we put a video on YouTube and on our site via Wistia, how would that affect our rankings/authority/credibility? Would we get punished for duplicate video content? 2. If we put a Wistia hosted video on our website twice, on two different pages, we would get hit for having duplicate content? Any other suggestions regarding hosting on Wistia and YouTube versus just Wistia for product videos would be much appreciated. Thank you!

The Ultimate Question
This is probably going to look bad, but Im going to do it anyway. Ive owned my own business for over twenty five years. Due to the economy and a health crisis, my business has come to an end. Im left pretty much with nothing except my family, which is on shakey grounds as well. anyway. Ive been working on the IM, SEO thing for about two years. Ive made some money, but nothing that would make a difference to my situation. I now have a site in a competitive niche. The site is rated A by the app here on seomoz. But my site is lacking in authority backlinks. I write my own posts, about two a day, and honestly, it is of much better quality than those ranking . My site stays right around #11. Every other day, the site goes to #7 or 8. When that happens, I make between 300-400 a day. Then it falls back to 11. So the on site is good, rated A here. My site is speedy Not enough backlinks The content is good I was foolish enough to believe the G story about backlinks not being important. Concentrate on the content. All of that crapola. The sites that are ranking well have all the typical xrumer links. Totally not related links. Junk. And from what Ive seen, I believe the sites ranking 1-3 are making about $1000. a day. So you can imagine what being this close, after losing so much is doing to me. So.... Right now I am just writing content, pinging, social bookmarking and submitting rss feeds daily. Does anyone have any real information on how to bump my site up in rankings. Please, no stories about guest blogging, or attempts to sell me your SEO service I know I would do it for someone else and I have many times in the past. If you can help me, please reread, and contact me. I wish you all the best. Sorry for the melodrama.

Another Penalty Question - Should I Start from Scratch?
I've seen many questions on google penalties recently. Not really sure where to go from here. I realised a year or so we would be living on borrowed time with our link building methods. We have been really successful in the past and are keen to build a site that has a bit more longevity. We have not received a warning from google but have lost pretty much all of our ranking for everything. My question is with our backlink profile as it is. Building links from various blog networks for the past 3 years. Is it just worth rebranding and starting from scratch rather than trying to get over a million links removed? We have a lot of content that I guess could be classed as spam. Should I really remove all of the content? or leave it running as we are still getting some traffic from other marketing activities. Or should I just get a new domain and transfer all the decent content?
