Supplier Videos & Duplicate Content
-
Hi,
We have some supplier videos the product management want to include on these product pages.
I am wondering how detrimental this is for SEO & the best way to approach this.
Do we simply embed the supplier YouTube videos, or do we upload them to our YouTube - referencing the original content & then embed our YouTube videos?
Thank you!

Hi Becky
It all comes down to intent. Whether you want to attract visitors to your page or your Youtube channel.
There is no direct SEO benefit by having a Youtube video on your page, you are essentially adding an outbound link even if it's nofollow - however it does provide really valuable information for the user. If cost is an issue and you feel you have no alternative then I would use a Youtube video.
The other benefit is that the video will be seen on that platform, the second biggest search network, and people searching for that product may click a link back to you. So if you are going to add videos to YouTube then make sure they are fully optimised.
Fill in the description fully with the a link back to your product page in the first line (It won't help with SEO as they are nofollowed - but it may result in people following the link back to your site)
Fully brand the video to heighten your own company's brand awareness - so maybe a 4 second sting at the beginning - then the video then a branded placeholder at the end.
Also make sure all of the tags are filled in for search & location etc are filled in advanced options.
MOZ use Wistia as a form of self hosting but do in fact put some videos on Youtube some months later. There is a new year video on Youtube - posted in May! (5 months later) - They title the two videos slightly differently so that they get two bites of the cherry for searchers. (Look up 'How To Create An SEO Strategy in 2017)
Finally: Note that Zappos do not use Youtube - Kind of says it all really!
I hope that helps!

Nigel

Hi Nigel
Sorry to only just get back to you. So you think there's no SEO merit in hosting a YouTube video on the product page?
Even if the video ranks higher, it is still on your channel so increasing visibility of your site?
I do understand that Google will obviously promote their site over yours, but if you don't have the budget capability at the moment to use another service would you just avoid videos on product pages altogether?
I'll check out the article, thank you!

Hi Becky
If it was my site I would not be embedding Youtube videos on product pages. It's no good for SEO and often the Youtube page you embed from will rank way higher than the product page. Youtube wants to rank it's own pages not yours.
I would use a CDN, your own website or a service like Wistia to either self host or emulate self hosting. MOZ do this for their own Blog with a transcription beneath. You'd be amazed how much better this is if you are serious about product videos.
My understanding is that you can add these to Youtube after around 3 months as your authority is established - you then get some benefit of people searching Youtube for your products.

I apologise in advance but I wrote it - I hope there is no rule about putting ones own help page in!

What benefit is there to using video from your channel?
As for editing, you'll have to research what's necessary. Few years ago adding intro was enough, but I think they now compare audio and video and may flag videos as a duplicate based on % of identical parts. Or I may have read that wrong. It's best if you research this matter without relying on my advice.

Thank you!
We do have permission and can edit them at the start/end - if we can do both & upload them, is it still best to use the suppliers YT videos?
-
Embed the supplier's video.
This has more to do with youtube's guidelines than SEO.- First, you'll need the creator's permission to use the video.
- Second, you'll have to edit it, as duplicate videos are not allowed on youtube, you'll get a strike for uploading identical video. Few strikes and your channel is blocked, which means you'll have embed videos which no one can watch.

SEM Rush & Duplicate content
Hi SEMRush is flagging these pages as having duplicate content, but we have rel = next etc implemented: https://www.key.co.uk/en/key/brand/bott https://www.key.co.uk/en/key/brand/bott?page=2 Or is it being flagged as they're just really similar pages?

Duplicate content. Competing for rank.
Scenario: An automotive dealer lists cars for sale on their website. The descriptions are very good and in depth at 1,200 words per car. However chunks of the copy are copied from car review websites and weaved into their original copy. Q1: This is flagged in copyscape - how much of an issue is this for Google? Q2: The same stock with the same copy is fed into a popular car listing website - the dealer's website and the classifieds website often rank in the top two positions (sometimes the dealer on top other times the classifieds site). Is this a good or a bad thing? Are you risking being seen as duplicating/scraping content? Thank you.

Duplicate content on recruitment website
Hi everyone, It seems that Panda 4.2 has hit some industries more than others. I just started working on a website, that has no manual action, but the organic traffic has dropped massively in the last few months. Their external linking profile seems to be fine, but I suspect usability issues, especially the duplication may be the reason. The website is a recruitment website in a specific industry only. However, they posts jobs for their clients, that can be very similar, and in the same time they can have 20 jobs with the same title and very similar job descriptions. The website currently have over 200 pages with potential duplicate content. Additionally, these jobs get posted on job portals, with the same content (Happens automatically through a feed). The questions here are: How bad would this be for the website usability, and would it be the reason the traffic went down? Is this the affect of Panda 4.2 that is still rolling What can be done to resolve these issues? Thank you in advance.

[E-commerce] Duplicate content due to color variations (canonical/indexing)
Hello, We currently have a lot of color variations on multiple products with almost the same content. Even with our canonicals being set, Moz's crawling tool seems to flag them as duplicate content. What we have done so far: Choosing the best-selling color variation (our "master product") Adding a rel="canonical" to every variation (with our "master product" as the canonical URL) In my opinion, it should be enough to address this issue. However, being given the fact that it's flagged as duplicate by Moz, I was wondering if there is something else we should do? Should we add a "noindex, follow" to our child products and "index, follow" to our master product? (sounds to me like such a heavy change) Thank you in advance

Copying my Facebook content to website considered duplicate content?
I write career advice on Facebook on a daily basis. On my homepage users can see the most recent 4-5 feeds (using FB social media plugin). I am thinking to create a page on my website where visitors can see all my previous FB feeds. Would this be considered duplicate content if I copy paste the info, but if I use a Facebook social media plugin then it is not considered duplicate content? I am working on increasing content on my website and feel incorporating FB feeds would make sense. thank you

What is the best way to allow content to be used on other sites for syndication without taking the chance of duplicate content filters
Cookstr appears to be syndicating content to shape.com and mensfitness.com a) They integrate their data into partner sites with an attribution back to their site and skinned it with the partners look. b) they link the image back to their image hosted on cookstr c) The page does not have microformats or as much data as their own page does so their own page is better SEO. Is this the best strategy or is there something better they could be doing to safely allow others to use our content, we don't want to share the content if we're going to get hit for a duplicate content filter or have another site out rank us with our own data. Thanks for your help in advance! their original content page: http://www.cookstr.com/recipes/sauteacuteed-escarole-with-pancetta their syndicated content pages: http://www.shape.com/healthy-eating/healthy-recipes/recipe/sauteacuteed-escarole-with-pancetta

Duplicate content even with 301 redirects
I know this isn't a developer forum but I figure someone will know the answer to this. My site is http://www.stadriemblems.com and I have a 301 redirect in my .htaccess file to redirect all non-www to www and it works great. But SEOmoz seems to think this doesn't apply to my blog, which is located at http://www.stadriemblems.com/blog It doesn't seem to make sense that I'd need to place code in every .htaccess file of every sub-folder. If I do, what code can I use? The weirdest part about this is that the redirecting works just fine; it's just SEOmoz's crawler that doesn't seem to be with the program here. Does this happen to you?

Duplicate content issue
Hi I installed a wiki and a forum to subdomains of one of my sites. The crawl report shows me duplicate content on the forum and on wiki. This will hurt the main site? Or the root domain? the site by the way is clean absolutely from errors. Thanks
