Can anyone help me diagnose an indexing/sitemap issue on a large e-commerce site?
-
Hey guys. Wondering if someone can help diagnose a problem for me.
Here's our site: https://www.flagandbanner.com/
We have a fairly large e-commerce site--roughly 23,000 urls according to crawls using both Moz and Screaming Frog. I have created an XML sitemap (using SF) and uploading to Webmaster Tools. WMT is only showing about 2,500 urls indexed. Further, WMT is showing that Google is indexing only about 1/2 (approx. 11,000) of the urls. Finally (to add even more confusion), when doing a site search on Google (site:) it's only showing about 5,400 urls found. The numbers are all over the place!
Here's the robots.txt file:
User-agent: *
Allow: /
Disallow: /aspnet_client/
Disallow: /httperrors/
Disallow: /HTTPErrors/
Disallow: /temp/
Disallow: /test/Disallow: /i_i_email_friend_request
Disallow: /i_i_narrow_your_search
Disallow: /shopping_cart
Disallow: /add_product_to_favorites
Disallow: /email_friend_request
Disallow: /searchformaction
Disallow: /search_keyword
Disallow: /page=
Disallow: /hid=
Disallow: /fab/*Sitemap: https://www.flagandbanner.com/images/sitemap.xml
Anyone have any thoughts as to what our problems are??

A site running ASP should be perfectly fine. I bet you will see substantial increases in a lot of positive metrics by just pairing down that navigation.

Thanks so much for your response, Russ.
You're confirming one of the many issues we have identified (too many internal links) but I had not connected it to indexing or site speed. When I use the Google Page Speed Tool, many of our pages are not even registering. It seems like it's taking too long to load them so it times out. Could the crazy amount of links have to do with this, too?
Moreover, our mobile speed is especially poor. This could be an even bigger problem in mobile, no?
Are you familiar with .asp sites, in particular, having indexing issues...or is that a false assumption?

Thanks for the question!
First, it is very common to get inconsistent answers from GSC, site:, sitemap and crawl results. Don't worry too much about that.
Your goal is to get as many of your pages indexed and that is a function of links pointing to your site and internal link structure. While it is an imperfect analogy, we often refer to this as "crawl budget". There are essentially 2 solutions to this...
1. Get more/better backlinks to a diversity of pages on your site.
2. Improve your internal link architecture so that Googlebot finds your pages more quickly.
I think the problem in your case is that the site inundates bots with generic navigational links. For example, this page...
http://www.flagandbanner.com/products/chrome-air-force-lt-general-flag-kit.asp
has 1400 internal links! That is crazy!
This page has 1500!
https://www.flagandbanner.com/products/citizenship-gifts.asp
You need to reel this back in dramatically. Your navigation should like to top level categories or maybe a handful of subcategories. Once in a category, you can reveal deeper categories. This will increase the likelihood that the related and "also" buy links that you find on product pages will get found and followed by Googlebot.
Finally, on a different note, you need to make sure you standardize the casing of URLs (ie: /Products/ or /products/) I noticed that you have links both internal and external that do not take this into account, causing unnecessary duplicate content.

E-commerce catalog structuring for SEO
We have about 10 high-level product categories with 100's of products from different suppliers. What is the best way to structure our product catalog and content to drive SEO? Basically, we get all our content from the manufacturer and want to make sure we are setting up the product pages and structure correctly. Any ideas or sites that do it very well? Thank you! 🙂

Google Is Indexing my 301 Redirects to Other sites
Long story but now i have a few links from my site 301 redirecting to youtube videos or eCommerce stores. They carry a considerable amount of traffic that i benefit from so i can't take them down, and that traffic is people from other websites, so basically i have backlinks from places that i don't own, to my redirect urls (Ex. http://example.com/redirect) My problem is that google is indexing them and doesn't let them go, i have tried blocking that url from robots.txt but google is still indexing it uncrawled, i have also tried allowing google to crawl it and adding noindex from robots.txt, i have tried removing it from GWT but it pops back again after a few days. Any ideas? Thanks!

How can i solve this redirect chain issue?
Hey, can somebody explain to me how can I solve this redirect chain issue? I tried redirecting /contact-us directly to **/contact/ **but this causes a chain of redirects of infinite dimensions. I don't know how to find the old redirect and delete it. Is there such an option? Thank you! byA7l

Can anyone help me figure out these sitelinks?
My company is Squatty Potty (yes, of magic unicorn fame) and I recently redid our website's navigation. We're overhauling it currently to rebuild the whole thing, but what is there should give a good idea of site hierarchy to Google I would think. The funny thing is, when you Google [squatty potty website] we do have sitelinks. But when you Google just [squatty potty] we don't. Any ideas on why sitelinks would appear on one search but not the other? I see they appear with [squatty potty logo] as well. I can't figure out how to get them to appear for my brand name search, any help appreciated!

Huge e-commerce site migration - what to do with product pages?
My very large e-commerce client is about to undergo a site migration in which every product page URL will be changing. I am already planning my 301 redirect process for the top ~1,000 pages on the site (categories, products, and more) but this will not account for the more than 1,000 products on the site. The client specified that they don't want to implement much more than 1,000 redirects so as to avoid impacting site performance. What is the best way to handle these pages without causing hundreds of 404 errors on site migration day? Thanks!

Our quilting site was hit by Panda/Penguin...should we start a second "traffic" site?
I built a website for my wife who is a quilter called LearnHowToMakeQuilts.com. However, it has been hit by Panda or Penguin (I’m not quite sure) and am scared to tell her to go ahead and keep building the site up. She really wants to post on her blog on Learnhowtomakequilts.com, but I’m afraid it will be in vain for Google’s search engine. Yahoo and Bing still rank well. I don’t want her to produce good content that will never rank well if the whole site is penalized in some way. I’ve overly optimized in linking strongly to the keywords “how to make a quilt” for our main keyword, mainly to the home page and I think that is one of the main reasons we are incurring some kind of penalty. First main question: From looking at the attached Google Analytics image, does anyone know if it was Panda or Penguin that we were “hit” by? And, what can be done about it? (We originally wanted to build a nice content website, but were lured in by a get rich quick personality to rather make a “squeeze page” for the Home page and force all your people through that page to get to the really good content. Thus, our avenge time on site per person is terrible and Pages per Visit is low at: 1.2. We really want to try to improve it some day. She has a local business website, Customcarequilts.com that did not get hit. Second question: Should we start a second site rather than invest the time in trying to repair the damage from my bad link building and article marketing? We do need to keep the site up and running because it has her online quilting course for beginner quilters to learn how to quilt their first quilt. We host the videos through Amazon S3 and were selling at least one course every other day. But now that the Google drop has hit, we are lucky to sell one quilting course per month. So, if we start a second site we can use that to build as a big content site that we can use to introduce people to learnhowtomakequilts.com that has Martha’s quilting course. So, should we go ahead and start a new fresh site rather than to repair the damage done by my bad over optimizing? (We’ve already picked out a great website name that would work really well with her personal facebook page.) Or, here’s a second option, which is to use her local business website: customcarequilts.com. She created it in 2003 and has had it ever since. It is only PR 1. Would this be an option? Anyway I’m looking for guidance on whether we should pursue repairing the damage and whether we should start a second fresh site or use an existing site to create new content (for getting new quilters to eventually purchase her course). Is there any reason why a website would submit all their content (videos, photo galleries, articles) to this?

Our site is recieving traffic for both .com/page and .com/page/ with the trailing slash.
Our site is recieving traffic for both .com/page and .com/page/ with the trailing slash. Should we rewrite to just the trailing slash or without because of duplicates. The other question is, if we do a rewrite, google has indexed some pages with the slash and some without - i am assuming we will lose rank for one of them once we do the rewrite, correct?
