PRweb & PRnewswire

Hi Guys,
Looking for thoughts on press release websites in terms of link value. Recent press releases on both these sites have recently appeared in OSE with DA's of 93/98 and PA's of 47/48 - great stuff.
Given we can control anchor text and include links these are great opportunities to combine anchor text vs branded links, include citation and co-citations all from within the main body of the release too depending on the PR package you subscribe to.
So are these link opps as valuable as they appear or could they be devalued based on the fact they are sat on these PR sites? Might Google view them as no more important than links from ezinearticles? Are they frowned on even more as they might be considered paid links?
Further to this, if they aren't as high value as their DA/PA suggests then might an extra filter in OSE to account for this be useful?
Interested to hear your thoughts
Cheers

For what it's worth and to update my previous response, see this from Search Engine Land. I think the URL is self-explanatory:

Matt Cutts on press releases, as quoted by SearchEngineLand:
Interesting bit:
Matt clarified that the links in the press releases themselves don’t count for PageRank value, but if a journalist reads the release and then writes about the site, any links in that news article will then count.

Hi James,
We have used PRWeb for the last 10 years to release some quite compelling press releases that have worked quite well for our client’s in announcing new services or updates to existing services.
Your question are they valuable then yes initially and a well written press release supported by a good SEO and social media campaign can prove beneficial. As for a long-term linking campaign I don’t feel it is beneficial – the press releases are picked up as static content and placed mainly as is on a variety of websites that for the most part are not indexed by Google.
There is a very good article by Tim Grice about the very subject: Are you wasting your time with online press releases?
Thanks
Vincent

Question on AMP
I'd like to utilize AMP for faster loading for one of my clients. However, it is essential that this client have chat. My developer is having trouble incorporating chat with AMP, and he claims that it isn't possible to integrate the two. Can anyone advise me as to whether this is accurate? If it is true that AMP and chat aren't compatible, are there any solutions to this issue? I'd appreciate any leads on this. Thanks!

Best SEO Strategy for Badges & Awards.
Hello Moz Friends! I was wondering what the correct "SEO friendly" strategy is with badges and awards. We recently got BBB accredited and added their badge to the footer of the website. We also added a review badge from shopper approved to the footer. As I'm joining other communities, I see there's badges given to us. For example, Alignable. Great place for networking. They offer a badge that says "locals recommend us" or something. Should I embed these badges onto our website someplace? Should I create a page for just badges or place them in the footer or sidebar widgets? What the best SEO practice for this? Thank you!!

Soft 404s for unpublished & 301'd content
Hi, One site I work with unpublished a lot of thin content. Great idea, right? These unpublished pages were then 301'd up to the main category page that they previously existed in. Now Google Webmaster Tools calls them out as soft 404 errors. This seems unexpected since the pages were 301'd. Here is my question; Is this a serious problem that may affect the site's overall organic results and if so what should I do about it? Thanks... Darcy

Service Area Landing Page Q&A
Good Morning, I was wondering if some one could help me out with some questions I have regarding how to make my service area landing pages rank better. A majority of them are on position 11 right now, and I feel like there might be a few minor things I might need to do to make them rank better. 1.) Meta Description - If I'm writing a meta description should I use an exact match for the keyword? Something like "Hire us to do your dry cleaning in Topeka, Kansas today." Or would I write "Topeka Kansas is in luck. We offer the best dry cleaning around" (I know this stinks from a call to action perspective, but it's the best example I could come up with off the top of my head). 2.) File Name - Would I make the name "topeka-kansas.html" or would I make it "dry-cleaning-topeka-kansas.html" 3.) H1 - should this be exactly the same as the title, or at least very close to it? 4.) Youtube Video - Would putting a youtube video on the page act as a relevancy signal to Google? 5.) Images - How many images would help on a landing page? Does having original images help more? 6.) Length of Page - Does the length of the page word wise help at all? 7.) Anything else - What other tweaks can I make to a landing page to boost its rankings? Thanks!

URL Re-Writes & HTTPS: Link juice loss from 301s?
Our URLs are not following a lot of the best practices found here: http://moz.com/blog/11-best-practices-for-urls We have also been waiting to implement HTTPS. I think it might be time to take the plunge on re-writing the URLs and converting to a fully secure site, but I am concerned about ranking dips from the lost link juice from the 301s. Many of our URLs are very old, with a decent amount of quality links. Are we better off leaving as is or taking the plunge?

Is Sitemap Issue Causing Duplicate Content & Unindexed Pages on Google?
On July 10th my site was migrated from Drupal to Google. The site contains approximately 400 pages. 301 permanent redirects were used. The site contains maybe 50 pages of new content. Many of the new pages have not been indexed and many pages show as duplicate content. Is it possible that there is a site map issue that is causing this problem? My developer believes the map is formatted correctly, but I am not convinced. The sitemap address is http://www.nyc-officespace-leader.com/page-sitemap.xml [^] I am completely non technical so if anyone could take a brief look I would appreciate it immensely. Thanks,

Proper Hosting Setup to Avoid Subfolders & Duplicate Content
I've noticed with hosting multiple websites on a single account you end up having your main site in the root public_html folder, but when you create subfolders for new website it actually creates a duplicate website: eg. http://kohnmeat.com/ is being hosted on laubeau.com's server. So you end up with a duplicate website: http://laubeau.com/kohn/ Anyone know the best way to prevent this from happening? (i.e. canonical? 301? robots.txt?) Also, maybe a specific 'how-to' if you're feeling generous 🙂
