How Critical to Address Redirect Chains?
-
We have about 100 redirect chains and were not sure of the impact they are having on our SEO.
One SEO expert wants to charge around $800 to clean these up for us.
Any thoughts on how serious of an issue this is and how important it is to address?

If you understand html and SEO, then this could be an "in-house" job, otherwise hire only a professional that can be held accountable. Make certain of your wishes/needs and document that both parties understand the need and expected results.
$800 is not much money to have your site professionally repaired.

Hi there!
Im not sure wherer your problem is that a few URLs have 100s redirects or that you have 100s URLs with some redirect chains. Whatever the case keep in mind that Google understands well up to 4-5 hops.
You might/might not need the services from a SEO expert/agency, as long as you have recognized those chains, work with your dev team to reduce the amount of redirections. One hint: Go one chain at a time, find all the URLs in that chain and analyze each of them. Look for inbound links to that URLs, traffic or any important aspect that if if you remove that URL/redirect might hurt your website.
Other hint: Do not remove that URL and let it be 404. Try shorten the chain and the extracted URLs point them to other page, of course be sure that they are related and it helps users. To back what i'm saying: Matt Cutts said it in these videos:
Can too many redirects from a single URL have a negative effect on crawling? Is there a limit to how many 301 (Permanent) redirects I can do on a site?Hope it helps.
Best luck.
GR.

Site move-Redirecting and Indexing dynamic pages
I have an interesting problem I would like to pick someone else’s brain. Our business has over 80 different products, each with a dedicated page (specs, gallery, copy etc.) on the main website. Main site itself, is used for presentation purpose only and doesn’t offer a direct path to purchase. A few years ago, to serve a specific customer segment, we have created a site where customers can perform a quick purchase via one of our major strategic partners. Now we are looking to migrate this old legacy service, site and all its pages under the new umbrella (main domain/CMS). Problem #1 Redirects/ relevancy/ SEO equity Ideally, we could simply perform 1:1 - 301 redirect from old legacy product pages to the relevant new site products pages. The problem is that Call to action (buy), some images and in some cases, parts of the copy must be changed to some degree to accommodate this segment. The second problem is in our dev and creative team. There are not enough resources to dedicate for the creation of the new pages so we can perform 1:1 301 redirects. So, the potential decision is to redirect a visitor to the dynamic page URL where parent product page will be used to apply personalization rules and a new page with dynamic content (buy button, different gallery etc.) is displayed to the user (see attached diagram). If we redirect directly to parent URL and then apply personalization rules, URL will stay the same and this is what we are trying to avoid (we must mention in the URL that user is on purchase path, otherwise this redirect and page where the user lands, can be seen as deceptive). Also Dynamic pages will have static URLs and unique page/title tag and meta description. Problem #2 : Indexation/Canonicalization The dynamic page is canonicalized to the parent page and does have nearly identical content/look and feel, but both serve a different purpose and we want both indexed in search. Hope my explanation is clear and someone can chip in. Any input is greatly appreciated! vCm2Dt.jpg

Should I redirect off topic blog posts?
We launched a store on top of a popular blog. The blog had nothing to do with the store. The blog has a lot of backlinks and traffic, but our store is now our primary business. I am concerned that the off topic blog content may be affecting or ability to rank better for the core store business. Should we delete or redirect the old blog content to another website to improve the SEO for our store?

301 redirects
One of our employees took an SEO class recently. She was told that having too many 301 redirects can hurt SEO. I have never heard of 301 redirects as having a negative impact. Any thoughts?

CPanel Redirect not allowing login access.
Using the redirect function in cPanel I am able to create the 301 redirect that I need to not have duplicate content issues in Moz. However, the issue now is that when I try to login to domain.com/login it redirects to domain.com/index.php?q=admin, which is not a page on the site and I can no longer login. I have checked the htaccess file and it appears that the entry is correct ( I originally thought that the cPanel redirect was not writing access correctly ). I am not sure if there is a small detail that I am missing with this or not. So my main question is how do I redirect my site to remove dup content errors while retaining the login at domain.com/admin and not be redirected to domain.com/index.php?q=admin? Thank you ahead of time for your assistance.

DNS or 301 Website Redirect
We are running a marketplace site, so we have thousands of vendors selling their products on our site. Each vendor has a Profile page and we are soon to launch a premium store-front that is white label. Many of these vendors will want to point a custom url to their premium store-front (which is a sub domain of the marketplace) and we are trying to get an understanding of how we should instruct them to point their url in a way that will give the main marketplace site the seo juice. We also want to understand what will show up in the address bar. Will it be their url or our sub domain? Will any of the marketplace seo juice boost their url local listing status?

HT.Access Redirect Question
Quick question on the HT.Access / Redirects... II have a site http://www.securitysystemsfortlauderdale.org/ADT-Home-Security-Alarm-Systems/ and I am running througth SEO moz for backlinks and noticed a large descrepancy on the links on the root vs the redirect. There are more links on the root and less on the redirect. Does this affect SEO for Google or does Google follow the redirects and give credit accordingly. Thanks for your help!!! Matt
