Does A Local Therapist Need A Blog, or Should They Focus on Main Service Pages?

Hi everyone!
I am just starting to practice SEO by assisting a friend with her local relationship therapy practice, and I'm not sure whether or not she needs a blog.
Here's the content they currently have:
- A page for specific categories within relationship therapy (unmarried couples, marriage, divorce, pre-marital, etc)
- On each page, she describes what that type of therapy is, what clients can expect, and how she will help them during the process.
My question is this:
- Does it make sense to start a blog, or, is it better to build out the main, static service pages with more content?
I'm worried that if she does start a blog, that it could potentially take away from the authority of the main service pages.
For example, let's say she writes a highly specific post titled "how to talk to your husband about marriage". Is it better to just incorporate aspects of this post on the main marriage page, or keep it as a blog post?
I really appreciate any suggestions and I'm happy to answer any questions.

Good discussion going on here. I'll add a few big picture thoughts:
How much content (whether in the form of pages or posts) the therapist will want to build should be determined by 3 things:
- How much she enjoys sharing what she knows and how much time she has to devote to writing
- How helpful this will be to the public both in terms of informing them, and transforming them into clients
- How competitive her market is
If she likes to write, this is a good start, and if she is a good writer, it's an even better one. And, of course, she needs to have the time.
The true usefulness of the content will determine how much it impacts both the lives of the readers and the financial bottom line of the therapist. The true usefulness will also gradually impact Google's perception of the website as an authoritative source on its topics.
The happy medium being aimed for is to publish enough content to attain the bookings and rankings the therapist ideally desires, but not going overboard beyond that. So, for example, if the therapist is located in a small, rural area, she may discover that writing two blog posts a month is all it takes for her to become competitively ranked and to have a full patient roster. But, if her practice is in a metropolis, the effort she'll need to put into being ranked and booked is likely to be much, much greater. Because of this, it's smart to assess the competitive landscape the therapist is entering, and to implement as much tracking as possible to help determine how much content (pages or posts) is needed to meet goals, and how that content is assisting in those goals being met.
Finally, as Ed is mentioning, it's important that your most important pages are the easiest to find, by means of your internal linking structure. In other words, the therapist's page on "Couples Therapy" will likely be one you're internally linking to more prominently than a single article she wrote about "How to Apologize Sincerely" or something like that.
In the long run, though, the decision to create a blog or a library of static articles should be based on the therapist's desire to share, the need to use content as a vehicle for client education and conversion, and the unique competitive landscape in which the practice is operating.

SEO for services (especially local ones) is a minefield sometimes. But be open, honest and answer the questions you get asked the most at work and google will reward you whether it's super-duper schema-marked up with a ton of links or whether it's just the best article from an expert with some letters after her name who knows what she's talking about. Google prefers the latter. So much content today is written by people with no education. Show them your therapist went to College and has some authority and you'll out rank them all - even from powerful domains.

That's an extremely important and pertinent question. So i've identified that `Veneers' and 'Veneers Prices' are two separate topics in the eyes of google. So this page is doing really well On the other hand 'Dental Implant Prices' and 'Dental Implants' are considered by google to be in the same 'topic'. So I did have a dental implants price blog but it just didn't rank and I suspected it also pulled my dental implants page down the rankings with internal competition.
So I made it into a glossy PDF and now have it as a download on my dental implants page and we're now ranking better for dental implants price/cost.
It can be difficult to determine what's a topic and what isn't a topic and what to bundle together and keep seperate and i'll be honest, I've done lots of research and testing to get our high dental rankings. Go with your gut and use google by searching for different things and seeing what comes up on the top pages.
As for the linking question, pagerank sculpting is dead. If it's useful for someone to navigate off a page and to another page then have a link. More the merrier I always think and I've never seen any differences trying to squeeze all my traffic down highways on my website that i've devised. Let people do what they want and then use the insights to make the page better.
This idea of 'Leaky landing pages' (something TOTALLY DIFFERENT from direct response advertising) has somehow gotten itself over to SEO but it doesn't matter. I'd link in both directions if it's appropriate and you think it will help people not to get stranded or stuck on your site. There's always the navigation if they are feeling like they don't know where to go next. and if you use something like hotjar you can see where they are going to by using the navigation and bang a link in there to make life easier.
What you MUST do though is have all the little sub-categories linking into the main category like spokes on a wheel. This tells google that's the main category. But you'll still see loads of people landing on the spokes and navigating in and rarely the other way around at first.
So say, 'this article is about how to not be passive-aggressive' if you are looking at how to calm aggressive partners, maybe check this out [how to calm an argument] etc with anchor text, so google know's what that article means. Use exact anchor text. You're not going to get into trouble for that. You can even occasionally use the local identifier. I've not gotten any heat for that. So visit our main page here: "Dental Implants Liverpool" Depends whether you're more interested in local or national rankings to start you off.

I see the benefit of linking to a static service page from a related blog post. A quick clarification I'm wondering about; I'll use your veneers example.
Does your main veneers page include a link to the "veneers price" blog post? Or, and with any other service, have you found more success only linking in one direction?
I'm curious if linking in both directions versus one has any noticeable impact on link equity or conversions.

Also from a linking perspective you're much more likely to be able to get links to a blogpost answering a great question about relationships than to a page on how smart you are and that you have a pHD and can save a marriage. So getting links is also important and blogs are the way to do that. It's called 'linkworthy content' for outreach.

OK so I have a dentists. So we basically do the same thing from a digital marketing perspective. We make users trust us and then get them to come in for a consultation, pay us and begin a trusting relationship where we listen to their problems and heal them.
Blogs are Extremely important. The things you need to remember are that blogs can be written about specific topics and subjects (how do I talk to my husband) (why doesn't he take out the trash) all the little things that people will be googling when they need an answer to a question but don't necessarily think they need a relationship councillor.
So structure your main pages into main topics: her, him, confrontations, sex etc. and then think of 'sub-topics' and questions specifically surrounding these main topics. Then link (with anchor text) from your blogs to your main service pages with links, opt-in boxes and all the other ways you'll find out about when you research writing a blog. Also use the blog to get people to sign up for your newsletter and join your social media groups.
Some of your main traffic sources will be your blog and it's native content that you own so you can run ads on it - for yourself - right there in the copy.
So to give you an example, we have a veneers page. It has on it everything you need to know if you want to come in and buy veneers. But we also have a 'Veneers price' blogpost and this gets 100x more traffic and it talks about all the different ins and outs of prices and how much different types of veneers cost. Throughout that piece are sentences like, "If you're interested to come for an appointment to discuss composite veneers then click here to see our main services page "composite veneers" This tells google that your main page is the most important and you'll not get internal competition if you think about the data architecture and site structure of the main pages and blogs carefully. Use FAQ's at the end of your main pages or blogs to pick up other questions and mark them up to get better CTR in the SERPS and more exposure to potential patients.
I ended up in a funnel for a South African Guy with a site called 'love at first fight' because I typed in 'why does my wife get so irate about me not putting the bins out the day before the cleaner is coming' and ended up learning so much, subscribing to his newsletters and almost hiring him! (the answer is basically that if she can't trust you with the bins - an easy job - then how can she trust you doing the Digital Marketing for her dental practice.
Hope this makes sense. But Blog. Get writing. Right now!! lol.

Ecommerce Site Structure -- "/our_locations" page: helpful or harmful?
Hello! We are a retailer with brick and mortar stores in different cities. We have a website (ourbusiness.com), which includes a blog (ourbusiness.com/blog) and a separate ecommerce site for each store in subfolders (ourbusiness.com/Boston-store and ourbusiness.com/Atlanta-store). NB: We do this for non-business reasons and have no choice. So, this is not like REI (for example) or other stores with lots of locations but one central ecommerce operation. Most experts seem to recommend a site structure that echoes REIs. IE: a home page principally devoted to ecommerce (rei.com) includes an Our Locations-type page (rei.com/stores) which links to local store pages like (rei.com/stores/fresno) I understand how this would help REI, since their homepage is devoted to ecommerce and they need a store locator page that doesn't compete with the shopping experience. But since we can't send people to products directly from our home page, is there any reason for us not to put the store locator function right on the home page? That is, is there any reason in our case to prefer (A) ourbusiness.com/our_locations/Boston_store over (B) ourbusiness.com/Boston-store? As i see it, the extra page (/our_locations/) could actually hurt, as it puts products one click further away from customers, and one link deeper for bots. On the other hand, it may make the multi-store structure clearer to bots (and maybe people) and help us in local search. Finally, would it make a difference if there were 10 stores vs 2? Thanks for any thoughts!

Blog name convention
Hiya, We are about to launch a new blog called 'Leading Minds Network' and we are wondering what would it the best SEO friendly name convention across the website. Wether if we call it 'blog' across the website and then drive people to our blog page called 'Leading Minds Network' or whther if we call it 'leading minds Network' on the website and drive people to the 'leading minds network' page. Local Search ( Automotive Vertical ) One Targeted Landing Page Listed Twice In Navigation
NOT talking about the same page being linked to twice Talking about One (1) (landing) page Being Listed Twice In Navigation. Looking for a definitive answer that there is NO negative SEO ( or negative anything ) to put the same page in your site's Navigation Bar ... twice (or more than once) Can't find anything written that there is anything to consider or be concerned with, but, thought I'd ask. I'm a newERbie, but not a NEWbie...have 2.5 years experience in local, on-page SEO...but only know what I know Maybe I should know this, but, I don't. E.g. I have SEEN it being done, 'all the time', but now, when I went to do it with a little bit of a different rationale, I was questioned about ' ... is this okay for SEO ' I THINK yes But, I want to KNOW yes ... it is ok.

Theory: Local Keywords are Hurting National Rankings?
I've read a good amount here and in other blog posts about strategies for national brands to rank locally as well with local landing pages, citations, etc. I have noticed something strange that I'd like to hear if anyone else is running into, or if anyone has a definitive answer for. I'm looking at a custom business printing company where the products can and are often shipped out of state, so it's a national brand. On each product page, the client is throwing in a few local keywords near where the office is to help rank for local variations. When looking at competitors that have a lower domain authority, lower volume of linking root domains, less content on the page, and other standard signals, they are ranking nationally better than the client. The only thing they're doing that could be better is bolding and throwing in the page keyword 5-10 times (which looks unnatural). But when you search for keyword + home city, the client ranks better. My hypothesis is that since the client is optimizing product pages for local keywords as well as national, it is actually hurting on national searches because it's seen as local-leaning business. Has anyone run into this before, or have a definitive answer?

How does duplicate content work when creating location specific pages?
In a bid to improve the visibility of my site on the Google SERP's, I am creating landing pages that were initially going to be used in some online advertising. I then thought it might be a good idea to improve the content on the pages so that they would perform better in localised searches. So I have a landing page designed specifically to promote what my business can do, and funnel the user in to requesting a quote from us. The main keyword phrase I am using is "website design london", and I will be creating a few more such as "website design birmingham", "website design leeds". The only thing that I've changed at the moment across all these pages is the location name, I haven't touched any of the USP's or the testimonial that I use. However, in both cases "website design XXX" doesn't show up in any of the USP's or testimonial. So my question is that when I have these pages built, and they're indexed, will I be penalised for this tactic?

Is my competitor doing something blackhat? - Cannot only access pages via serps , not from website navigation /search
Hi Mozzers, One of my competitors uses a trick whereby they have a number of different sitemaps containing location specific urls for their most popular categories on their eCommerce store. It's quite obvious that they are trying to rank for keyword <location>and from what I am see, you cant to any of these pages from their website navigation or search , so it's like these pages are separated from the main site in terms of accessing them but you can access the main website pages/navigation the other way round (i.e if you select one of the pages from finding it in serps) </location> I know that google doesn't really like anything you can't access from the main website but would you class this as blackhat ? / cheating etc ... They do tend to rank quite well for these alot of the pages and it hasn't seem to have affected pages on their main website in terms of rankings. I am just wondering , if it's worth us doing similar as google hasn't penalised them by the looks of things.. thanks Pete

Which is better for Local & National coupons --1000s of Indexed Pages per City or only a Few?
Not sure where this belongs.. I am developing a coupons site for listing local coupons and national coupons (think Valpak+RetailMeNot), eventually in all major cities, and am VERY concerned about how many internal pages to let google 'follow' for indexing, as it can exceed 10,000 per city. Is there a way to determine what the optimal approach is for internal paging/indexing BEFORE I actually launch the site (it is about ready except for this darned url question, which seems critical) Ie can I put in searchwords for google to determine which ones are most worthy to have their own indexed page? I'm a newbie sort of, so please put answer in simple terms. I'm one person and have limited funds and need to find the cheapest way to get the best organic results for each city that I cover. Is there a generic answer? One SEO firm told me the more variety the better. Another told me that simple is better, and use content on the simple pages to get variety. So confused I decided to consult the experts here! Here's the site concept: **FOR EACH CITY: ** User inputs location: Main city only(ie Houston), or 1 of 40 city regions(suburb, etc..), or zip code, or zip-street combo, OR allow gps lookup. A miles range is defaulted or chosen by the user. After search area is determined, user chooses 1 of 6 types of coupons searches: 1. Online shopping with national coupon codes, choice of 16 categories (electronics, health, clothes, etc) and 100 subcategories (computers, skin care products, mens shirts) These are national offers for chains like Kohls, which do not use the users location at all. 2. Local shopping in-store coupons, choice of same 16 categories and 100 subcategories that are used for online shopping in #1 (mom & pop shoe store or local chain offer). The results will be within the users chosen location and range. 3. Local restaurant coupons, about 60 subcategories (pizza, fast food, sandwiches). The results are again within the users chosen location and range. 4. Local services coupons, 8 categories (auto repair, activities,etc..) and around 200 subcategories (brakes, miniature golf, etc..). Results within users chosen location and range. 5. Local groceries. This is one page for the main city with coupons.com grocery coupons, and listing the main grocery stores in the city. This page does not break down by sub regions, or zip, etc.. 6. Local weekly ad circulars. This is one page for the main city that displays about 50 main national stores that are located in that main city. So, the best way to handle the urls indexed for the dynamic searches by locations, type of coupon, categories/subcats, and business pages The combinations of potential urls to index are nearly unlimited: Does the user's location matter when he searches for one thing (restaurants), but not for another (Kohls)? IF so, how do I know this? SHould I tailor indexed urls to that knowledge? Is there an advantage to having a url for NATIONAL cos that ties to each main city: shopping/Kohls vs shopping/Kohls/Houston or even shopping/Kohls/Houston-suburb? Again, I"m talking about 'follow' links for indexing. I realize I can have google index just a few main categories and subcats and not the others, or a few city regions but not all of them, etc.. while actually having internal pages for all of them.. Is it better to have 10,000 urls for say coupon-type/city-region/subcategory or just one for the main city: main-city/all coupons?, or something in between? You get the gist. I don't know how to begin to figure out the answers to these kinds of questions and yet they seem critical to the design of the site. The competition: sites like Valpak, MoneyMailer, localsaver seem to favor the 'more is better' approach, with coupons/zipcode/category or coupons/bizname/zipcode But a site like 8coupons.com appears to have no indexing for categories or subcategories at all! They have city-subregion/coupons and they have individual businesses bizname/city-subregion but as far as I see no city/category or city-subregion/category. And a very popular coupons site in my city only has maincity/coupons maincity/a few categories and maincity/bizname/coupons. Sorry this is so long, but it seems very complicated to me and I wanted to make the issue as clear as possible. Thanks, couponguy

How Best to do implement a Branch Locator for a Website with invididual location category pages
Hi All, We have an ecommerce Website with multiple locations for our stores and we currently display separate location specific pages for the different categories and sub categories. This has helped us previously to rank well for local search in each of the areas we have a store but over the last few months since humingbird, our local rankings on some things have dip a little . We want to implement a branch locator of some description to improve the user experience. From looking at other websites with branch locators, they tend to a separate button/page with which you can search for a branch etc. However, they don't have location specific pages. My query is should I do it so if a user comes in on a specific category location page and follows it through to product page , then to have a tab on the product page displaying the local branch from which he can come in. My thinking here is that , is that it would help confirm my local citations and help improve local rankings. Or Should the local branch be displayed on the local category pages instead or as well ?. If a user comes in from the homepage or not on a specific location page, then the branch locator will allow them to search for a specific branch. Should I also put in a branch locator as a separate page or can It be in more places. I don't want to damage anything which may have an effect on rankings due to citations and NAP on the location specific pages. Any advice or good examples to look at would be greatly appreciated thanks Sarah.
