Why is this site ranking higher?
-
We've put a fair bit of effort into delivering value here:
https://lewescountycars.co.uk/
But a search for "Lewes taxis" or "taxis Lewes" puts this site above us:
https://www.lewestowntaxis.co.uk/
As you can you see, this is a tiny site that we outperform in most ways.... what can we do to rank above it that we haven't already done?
Thanks in advance - Gerard.

Many thanks to both of you for your very helpful responses. I'll get to work on improving things as suggested.

Hi Gerard,
Google sometimes does weird things that is very difficult to understand. I've seen and compared both sites and yours at Seo Onpage is much better, because the other one is very poor at content and number of pages.
The only 2 things that can make sense are the domain name (your competitor's domain name includes "taxis") and the backlink profile, so like you cant do nothing about the first thing, I recommend you to replicate the links they created that you don't have:
https://analytics.moz.com/pro/link-explorer/overview?site=www.lewestowntaxis.co.uk&target=domain
Maybe that helps.
Good luck!

Hi Gerard
Oops - yes I was looking at the top one - but it is valid that the top one has so many backlinks and I think that this is what you should be aiming for so if you looked at a citation burst first you could easily add 30+ good backlinks which will help you. I have updated my first answer.
I would consider putting your phone number in the SEO Meta title for the home page.
Google measures Click Through Rate (CTR) and I can imagine that their click-through is higher than yours because someone sees the result and calls them. You could easily leapfrog them I think.
1. Add phone number
2. Get lots of good backlinks
3. Try not to keyword stuff the page - you have 232 mentions of the word Lewes in the html which is a lot! they have 98 which is still a lot but fewer than you - keyword stuffing can harm a page.Good luck with everything and apologies for the mix-up - it was actually good though as you can see the value of a lot of backlinks!

Hi Nigel
Many thanks for your response.
I think you have the sites mixed up - I was referring to https://www.lewestowntaxis.co.uk not lewestaxis.co.uk, as the site that is somehow ranking above https://lewescountycars.co.uk

Hi Gerard
I have looked at the URL and backlink profile for starters. So these are my observations:
1. https://www.lewestowntaxis.co.uk/ was registered in 2012 yours in 2008 - Looking at Moz their Domain Authority is 10 and yours is 14 so little difference
2. You both have very few backlinks 7 vs 8
3. Lewstowntaxis is quite skinny and your is better defined. Plus you rank for around 4x the number of keywords they do.
4. You've got better GMB reviews than them too!
If it was me I would.
Work on your local backlinks from Yelp, Yell and Thompson to local news sites - get those links! - this is not difficult. You can use Moz local or Bright Local is good - you can do a 35 site citation burst for $100 https://www.brightlocal.com/take-contol-of-your-citations/
Get more reviews on GMB - talk about yourself and add photos, links & posts

Set up Google maps and embed one in your site - 'How to Find Us'
https://support.google.com/maps/answer/6139433?hl=enThat really is just for starters and the best things you can do to bump your site upwards.
I hope that helps,
Regards Nigel

Representing categories on my site
My site serves a consumer-focused industry that has about 15-20 well recognized categories, which act as a pretty obvious way to segment our content. Each category supports it's own page (with some useful content) and a series of articles relevant to that category. In short, the categories are pretty focal to what we do. I am moving from DNN to WordPress as my CMS/blog. I am taking the opportunity to review and fix SEO-related issues as I migrate. One such area is my URL structure. On my existing site (on DNN), I have the following types of pages for each topic: / <topic>- this is essentially the landing page for the topic and links to articles</topic> /<topic>/articles/ <article-name>- topics have 3-15 articles with this URL structure</article-name></topic> With WordPress, I am considering moving to articles being under the root. So, an article on (making this up) how to make a widget would be under /how-to-make-a-widget, instead of /<widgets>/article/how-to-make-a-widget I will be using WordPress categories to reflect the topics taxonomy, so I can flag my articles using standard WordPress concepts.</widgets> Anyway, I'm trying to get my head around whether it makes sense to "flatten" my URL structure such that the URLs for each article no longer include the topic (the article page will link to the topic page though). Thoughts?

Google penalising my site? Ranking now outside top 50
Hey there, Was wondering if anyone could give me some advice/help on my current problems with my Google ranking. I used to be on page one this time last year (still am on yahoo and bing) but Google has pushed me out of the top 50. Since then I built a new site on wordpress with new content but it hasn't made any real difference. This is my site address: www.elvisimpersonator4u.co.uk I also have a separate blog here: www.thisiselvis.tv The blog did have some duplicate writing on it which I removed a few months back but it still hasn't improved my Google ranking. Would a 301 redirect fix this problem properly? I've done quite a lot of SEO on several pages on the new site to try and improve it but no luck so far. In fact I hope I haven't over optimised! No tools seem to indicate this though. I have no messages in webmaster tools so there's no obvious penalty, my web hosts keep saying I just need to buy more link builds and content writing from them but I've already done a lot of this and it's made no discernible difference. If someone could have a look and give me some advice I would be most grateful! Thanks,

Redirect from old wordpress site to new php site? Best approach
Hi I have two websites one legacy site done in wordpress the other in php. However I would like to merge the two together and remove the wordpress site. However it has a good link profile and the pages rank well. What is the best approach to do a 301 redirect from the old site with all its pages pointing to the homepage of the new site? If so what's the best way to do this in wordpress? Many thanks

Mobile site rank on Google S.E. instead of desktop site.
Hello, all SEOers~ Today, I would like to hear your opinion regarding on Mobile site and duplicate contents issue. I have a mobile version of our website that is hosted on a subdomain (m instead www). Site is targeting UK and Its essentially the same content, formatted differently. So every URL on www exists also at the "m" subdomain and is identical content. (there are some different contents, yet I could say about 90% or more contents are same) Recently I've noticed that search results are showing links to our mobile site instead of the desktop site. (Google UK) I have a sitemap.xml for both sites, the mobile sitemap defined as follows: I didn't block googlebot from mobile site and also didn't block googlebot-mobile from desktop site. I read and watched Google webmaster tool forum and related video from Matt Cutts. I found many opinion that there is possibility which cause duplicate contents issue and I should do one of followings. 1. Block googlebot from mobile site. 2. Use canonical Tag on mobile site which points to desktop site. 3. Create and develop different contents (needless to say...) Do you think duplicate contents issue caused my mobile site rank on S.E. instead of my desktop site? also Do you think those method will help to show my desktop site on S.E.? I was wondering that I have multi-country sites which is same site format as I mentioned above. However, my other country sites are totally doing fine on Google. Only difference that I found is my other country sites have different Title & Meta Tag comparing to desktop site, but my UK mobile site has same Title & Meta Tag comparing to desktop. Do you think this also has something to do with current problem? Please people~! Feel free to make some comments and share your opinion. Thanks for reading my long long explanation.
