Syntax for canonical tag for a default page in a sub directory (not subdomain) of a web site?

I'm getting two "no canonical tag" errors for the default page of a sub-directory default page (www and root) - again NOT a subdomain.
Since the page is not the root of its own site, I tagged it as --
I have tried without the default.asp, but the error remains. Been doing this for 24 years and don't remember running across this before.

RE:
Changed page name, etc - still get a "missing canonical tag" error. At this point, I could be wrong, but I am convinced there's hidden problem, or a bug in the system.

What I ended up doing is just changing the page name from default.asp to "fedex-routes-forSale.asp", changing the navigation links and setting an .asp code page to redirect. Effectively skirting the default page canonical syntax conundrum.
This also cleared up the duplicate content issue as well - default vs root - www vs root. etc.
I'm still curious as to the dynamics of this issue, but opted for a nice, tidy PDF for my client, with all issues solved.

Picking a directory to list in
When i decide if a paid directory is worth listing in, do i look at the page where my link will be placed and judge it based on how many incoming links that page has, or looking at the page rank, or looking at the mozrank? Or is it just the overall rank of the home page of the directory? I notice that page rank gets less and less the deeper you go into a directory until the pages are unranked. Does that mean that the page is not crawled by google, or is considered an irrelevant page and would not be worth paying for a link there? Also, how many pages deep into the directory is too deep to mess with? Also what are some good directories that offer deep links? I'd love to hear everyone's thoughts.... Thanks in advance! Ron

How to Optimize a Home Page?
Can anyone advise on what is the best way to optimise the home page? Many websites I see include the target(focus) keywords from other pages on the home page. Is this self competition? "Avoid Keyword Self-Cannibalization- It's a best practice in SEO to target each keyword with a single page on your site" If an e-commerce website has 4 levels in the SEO architecture. Home Page, Brand Pages(Category), Range pages(sub-category) and individual product pages. It would seem that the main keywords would be within the category(brands) level of a website. However many websites I see include these on the home page as well. Could someone please clarify this? I do not recall seeing the report card saying Self-Cannibalization when these keywords(category level) are listed on the home page. However I could be wrong, Please could someone advise on what SEO MOZs recommendations are for best practise on optimizing a home page so that it does not compete with category pages, or other pages on the website. Moztool and on page ranking matching
How does the Moztool compare and filter the search phrases you enter in your campaign? Or more correctly, will it filter out stop words or is it an exact match? For example I enter a phrase to track that say: "book ski trip austria" Identified in Google I see that most users search for just that "book ski trip austria" But in content, I cant write that as that is uncorrect english and I want to maby write something like: "When you book a ski trip to austria you get..." How will this affect my on page SEO report, will it still match and mark a "V" in done or show a an error? Even more interesting is, what happen if you do phrases in different order like "An austrian skip trip will make you feel..."

To Many Links on site
I've had an issue with to many links on the site. My drop down menu, secondary footer and footer. The report told me that I had 253 links on each page. I then programmed my secondary footer to dynamic and ran a crawl and my links reduced accordingly to 201. Then turned the footer into dynamic and ran a crawl with my links increasing to 1500. This also happened between each phase but en went away. Oddly enough, my domain authority increased as well as other factors in the crawl report. This too many links thing is driving me crazy. Please provide some guidance.

Issue: Duplicate page title
Hello, I have run the "Crawl Diagnostics" report using SEOmoz pro and it says that I have a total of 56 errors. 18 of those errors being duplicate content and another 38 errors being duplicate title tags. Now I have looked at both reports and detail and the reason I am getting there errors is due to the fact the it is checking "http" and "https". So for example: my website is http://www.widgets.com On the crawl diagnostics report, it also checks https://www.widgets.com So it looks like I have duplicate content and duplicate title tags because of this Now my question is this: Is this really duplicate content? If so, how do I fix this? Any help is greatly appreciated.

On Page Analysis and Grading
I received an email that my on page analysis for my campaigns were completed. But when I click on the link there are no grades there. What does that mean? Another question on this topic....when your campaign is graded are pages graded on all the keywords in the campaign or is each keyword graded invidividually? Thanks!
