Absolute urls

I am redesigning my website with an updated theme.
One of the theme plugins takes my url: https://example-site.com/1st-level-page/2nd-level-page/page-contentand changes it to https%3A%2F%2Fexample-site.com%21st-level-page%22nd-level-page/page-content%2F
Does this effect how a web crawler see's my internal links?
Can this have a negative effect on my SEO?
Should I edit the plugin to force it to render the url exactly as written? -
HI Joe. Yes. Links still work flawlessly. And if you view page source, they look perfect.
Here's a button I just made in the theme.
http://starttheme2.wpengine.com/url-encoding/
If you hover over it you can see the url is perfect. But the url it's coded in the page like this:
https%3A%2F%2Fmoz.com%2Fabout%2Fteam%2Fbritney-muller
I'm not sure what plugin is causing this. If you want to have a look you most certainly are welcome to.

Hello Patrick
- Do the links still work?
- What Plugin are you using & why does it encode the URLs?
-
So after researching this, I'm being told that this is called url encoding. So the question really is, does URL encoding negatively effect internal linking and crawlers and can it negatively effect SEO?
-
No. It only displays the extra code in the word press text editor. The browser displays it properly.
Something is converting the "/" to %. There are no spaces in the url.
As I mentioned in my previous response, if I "view source" in the browser window the internal urls are all correct so I am at a loss.
Appreciate your help.

Yikes! Does it display that way in the browser? Is it possible to show how it looks in a browser?
The % shows when there are spaces in the domain name. You definitely don't want that URL structure - it's bad news.
-
Hi John!
Thanks for the feedback. Greatly appreciated.
Screenshot attached.
When I "view source" on a webpage in browser, the url is displayed exactly as needed. Does that matter? Or is that entirely different from the crawlers?
-
Hey Pat,
Any chance you can put the URL's in a word doc and pop a screen shot into the thread? I'm seeing % in the URL and I'm not sure if it's actually putting that in there.
If it's changing your URL structure, you'll need to do 301 redirects (one to one) in order to preserve the SEO equity. If you can edit the plugin to keep the old URL structure, that would be preferred.
Thanks!
John

SEO & URL parameters on external links
Hey guys! I've got a quick question: We are getting some guest posting opportunities with a few big sites in our space...
Link Building | | floriannin
In those guest posts we will also have to chance to link back to 1-2 articles of ours and to our main site. Should I use UTM parameters to track how many clicks we get or will this in any way negatively affect our SEO benefits? Hope you guys know what I mean. I found tons of articles on this but mostly about inbound links... which isn't the case here. Thanks in advance 🙂0 -
Reversing Canonical URLs?
A few months back, we set up canonical URLs on some pages with duplicate content to give some newer pages more link juice. Now, we need to do the opposite and give that same juice to some of the original pages. If we set up canonical URLs on the newer pages to point back to the original pages, are we losing the juice we've been building all along? Sorry for all this convoluted juice talk. Hopefully, my point is getting across here.

Site URL called out but not clickable.
Hi - I'm after a bit of clarity; if my site URL is referenced in an article, but doesn't actually link through, does this still 'add value' to my seo efforts? Thanks, David

Adding keyword to your url
Couldn't find the answer to my question anywhere so I'll give it a try here. If you have a site called www.example.com, and then want to add a keyword to this site, like this: www.example.com/keyword How do you add a keyword to your url like this? Without making the URL with the keyword your "main" URL, meaning you don't have to enter the keyworded URL to get to the homepage (www.example.com), and still rank better on the keyword put in the url. I'm a bit confused on the subject, would love for someone to help me understand! Thanks.

How to find all banklinks for a URL that forwards to a main URL
I have a client (yea! my second one doing seo) who has a law firm. He has a main site and then another site that just forwarded to his main website. He wants to find all the directories (and other places on the web) where his second site is listed. At the time when he was adding his firm into the directories, he was using his secondary url but now he wants to go back and use his main website. Unfortunately, he doesn't have a log of every place he added himself. I tried just searching Google for "mysecondarywebsite.com" (in quotes)for example but the SERPS return listings that aren't right. Suggestions?

I am working with a friend on optimizing a site that has a troublesome set of issues. The company has integrated some ERP system that cannot be changed or removed and it is creating goofy URL's. So my question is which URL do I build links to? the www.xxx.com or the crazy URL that it is being redirected to. Site URL: www.nauticalchartsonline.com

SEO Tool to search mass URLs (for link qualification)
Hi, I have been using OSE and have a compiled list of backlinks to my competitor's sites. The next step would be to go through and qualify all of these links for a link opportunities for my client's site. To save me a lot of time, I require a tool that will search all of these pages (say 1000) for specific keywords in tags or body content. A search query might be - site:(URL list) intitle:directory site:(URL list) "add site" etc Any ideas would be great. Thanks.
