What to do with existing URL when replatforming and new URL is the same?
-
We are changing CMS from WordPress to Uberflip. If there is a URL that remains the same I believe we should not create a redirect. However, what happens to the old page? Should it be deleted?

More than happy to help and hope that it was of value

Hi there Maland,
I'll do my best to break this down as I feel a bit confused. When you migrate to a new CMS hopefully your URLS match up and nothing goes wrong. In reality, this never happens. So think of it from a user point - a user wants to get a resource, make sure they can. They don't care much on the URL. If you get a 404 (page not found) redirect it to the correct location.
It's always fun migrating and normally one of the more stressful parts of doing SEO. I like to do a before and after comparison to map the URLs. This can depending on the size of the site though.
TL;DR
404 bad, 200 good.
you shouldn't need to 'delete' pages if they match the old structure. Redirect users if you do change the structure. Some more reading here - https://moz.com/blog/website-migration-guide
Good luck and check back to let us know how you got on, share the success, shout about the frustration and share what you learnt

URL Parameters for Product Variation
Hey there Mozzers, So I have a website that uses URL Parameters for product variations. So for example when I am in the product "test" that product has 5 different variations. So the url is as followed /product/test /products/test?variant=10271886529 /products/test?variant=10271886530 etc. Does Google understand that this is the same page ? Does it automatically exclude the variable in the url?

We sell IT Training courses and the structure is normally Top Folder=Main Courses section Sub Folder=Vendor Page Specific=Course Name + Term An example is courses/microsoft/mcse-training However I have a product where the vendor and course name are the same. How should I best organise the URL - double mention or single mention So a) courses/togaf/togaf-foundation-training or b) courses/togaf/foundation-training

Changing .html to .asp in URLs
Hi Mozzers, I have a question. The webmaster of a client of mine needs to make changes to some files which will effect the URL's. Essentially everything is staying the same but the end of the URL will change from .html to .asp. This is because the site will be dynamically loading content (perhaps from a database) (i.e. latest news to come from their blog etc..) In order to do this we would need to change the filenames of the whole website. (i.e. personnel.html would become personel.asp). Changing URLs can harm indexation but a small change to the end - would Google drop these pages? A 301 redirect is not possible from old URL to new. What impact would this have on Rankings? Thanks Gareth

Can I redirect a URL that has a # in it? How?
Hi there - My web developer is saying that I can't do a URL redirect with a "#" in it. Currently, the URL is actually an anchored link within a page (which the URL indicates with a #). I want to change the content to a new URL, but our website links internally to the old URL, so we would need to do a URL redirect (assume 301). Can you tell me if this is possible and how? Thanks!

Duplicate canonical URLs in WordPress
Hi everyone, I'm driving myself insane trying to figure this one out and am hoping someone has more technical chops than I do. Here's the situation... I'm getting duplicate canonical tags on my pages and posts, one is inside of the WordPress SEO (plugin) commented section, and the other is elsewhere in the header. I am running the latest version of WordPress 3.1.3 and the Genesis framework. After doing some testing and adding the following filters to my functions.php: <code>remove_action('wp_head', 'genesis_canonical'); remove_action('wp_head', 'rel_canonical');</code> ... what I get is this: With the plugin active + NO "remove action" - duplicate canonical tags

With the plugin disabled + NO "remove action" - a single canonical tag
With the plugin disabled + A "remove action" - no canonical tag I have tried using only one of these remove_actions at a time, and then combining them both. Regardless, as long as I have the plugin active I get duplicate canonical tags. Is this a bug in the plugin, perhaps somehow enabling the canonical functionality of WordPress? Thanks for your help everyone. Robert Dempsey0
