Why is this site ranking so well
-
I just took over an SEO campaign for a company we recently did a website for. The old company created individual landing pages for each city they service, but they didn't have any original content except replacing the city name. We are in the process of creating completely unique content per page.
My main issue is that there is a company with no link profile, duplicate content on every page, no social media presence, etc - but consistently ranks for city + fence company
The company we are starting to work with is: http://betterdecksandfences.com/
The company that is ranking for everything is: http://www.alcovyfence.com
Any ideas?

Thats odd because when i view them up in OSE I only see two root domains linking. Red Beacon and their domain. I don't like what the old firm did for BDF and were definitely going to make some changes on their inner page locating cities. I would of preferred to rank the homepage for all the cities rather than individual city pages. Just adds to my work.
Better Decks & Fences seems to have a higher quality backlinks and obviously it has a nicer design. I'v never been this baffled by a website ranking like this.

Odd, at first glance. The first thing that comes to mind is the history behind both sites. It would seem that neither of them has had any real SEO effort yet. Alcovy is apparently in need of a good bit of help, judging by their meta data (which may end up being to your advantage, since it seems that Google is forced to extract a description from the page, as a result). I see they both have a presence on Yelp, but Alcovy has mapped a large service area, while BD&F just plotted their location. The competitor also put up a number of pictures there, whereas your client has none. That would only affect leads and traffic, though, not rankings. I guess what I'm getting at is that Alcovy seems to be more aggressive, They may have published a lot of articles, gaining decent links and citations, they have quite probably sought listing on other trade and review directories, and seem to be generally more active and aggressive in promoting their business. If it were my client, I think I might do an audit on Alcovy and see what they've been up to... you're likely to find some opportunities there.

Hmmm, interesting.
Well they do have Snellville GA and fence company a ton in bold in the page content. This is an anomaly to me. My first thought was that this keyword must not be very competitive but once I pulled keyword analysis, this was not the case. Is it possibly that they ran a successful adwords campaign in the past and this catapulted them into a high SERP ranking and now they are just riding the waves of past successes. My explanations are completely exhausted.
I am curious about what someone more knowledge than myself has to say about it.

# of links and how it impacts ranking
Hi everyone I was running a competitor analysis in Moz Pro of my site and 3 competitors that are ranked above me. One of the things I noticed is that my # of total links is very high compared to 2 of my competitors(please see attachment). Other seo tools are telling me the same. This is mainly due to a few affiliate sites that have us in their footer. I was wondering if this could impact our ranking if some of these sites have very low domain authority and have thousands of backlinks to our site? I am looking into starting the disavowing process. Site Ranking for keywords that they haven't targeted in content
There is a site that I am constantly battling for the #1 spot for a particular keyword and I can't see that they are doing any link building, they are not using any anchor text for the keyword "at all" just their company name (not exact match) and their content doesn't even contain the keyword. I used Open site explorer to analyze their activity, but they are doing something I can't figure out from that data. Any other tools to use? I have higher quality links than them, post content nearly 5 times per week to my blog and their blog hasn't been updated in ages, I kill them in social media, there isn't one instance that they are better than my site and I only build quality driven links, no blog comment crap and get featured on lots of industry blogs for our work. I distribute my content very effectively, I just can't figure it out. They were no where about 5 months ago now they are tearing it up for lots of keywords in the industry top spots. I can build a few links and surpass them, but I have to do it every week or so and I think they are doing something fishy. I just want to figure out what they are doing and bury them. I don't want to post their url and mine here as I don't want them to see this post in search results.

Free SEO tools appearing in SERPS for a site
Hi there, I've just taken over a site and it doesn't have a huge amount of shelfspace on the SERPs for it's brand name. Looking at the results that are there are a lot of free SEO tools that are coming up. They haven't had an SEO before so it's not coming from their side. There's such a lot of them I was wondering if anyone had come across this before - is it simply a competitor looking at the seo, could it be one of the seo analytics packages using free sites or is there anything else to be aware of. I can start knocking the sites down the SERPs but just wondering if anyone has a good solution for this. thanks Shiv

Our site being outranked by competitors with lower "moz" scores - due to on-page SEO?
Howdy, Our SEO efforts are doing well, but for a few keywords it seems we cannot budge one of the competitors sitting in spot #1. Through some competitive analysis I've noticed that our website has a much higher mozRank with regards to both page and domain compared to the current #1 spot. My question is what kind of factors could be the issue as to why we are still being outranked. Is it simply a case of poor on-page SEO at this point or should I be taking the mozRanks with a grain of salt.
