SEO Migration / Transition from Current Platform. Have Experience?
-
We're currently about to make the switch from one commerce platform to another (volusion to magento,) and wondering if anyone here, at all, has any experience with having a site for a few years and then switching platforms.
How did the engines react? What did you do? Time frame for things that happened, etc...would love some feedback and input on your story if you've migrated platforms.
Thanks

Like Brad said, just try to retain the URL structures as much as possible unless you are really aiming to make it more seo friendly.
Do the migration quickly and make sure to minimise broken pages.
It'll usually affect your rankings, but you'll recover. Just do cleanup quickly and have your linking plan ready

Paul, this is something I have experienced a lot... there are many blogs who claims that good planning on platform migration can help you stay away from the loss of search engine traffic as well as rankings but I think migration is going to give a temporary effect on rankings and traffic and bad planning can make it preeminent.
Here are the following things you should keep in mind before you are starting to migrate a platform from one ecommerce platform to another.
- Make sure that the next ecommerce should have all the necessary SEO plug-ins installed that you will need to make your website look good to search engines as well as users.
- Make sure to do a proper 301 redirection on pages and on category and product level. Any mistakes will results as a ranking loss from the search engines.
- Try to keep the URLs same as possible so that redirect should not be needed
Try to update xml site map and webmaster tool about the change so that Google can track and re crawl the pages accordingly.
Let me assure you again that this might produce a negative impact on rankings and traffic for a short period of time but as soon as the pages started to crawl it will get fixed accordingly.
Hope this helps!

I've gone through this many times. Here are some high level points to consider.
1. Keep as much of the content the same as possible
2. Keep as many urls the same as possible
3. Be sure you have managed your potential 404 errors prior to launch
Many times people just accept that some new commerce platform uses a different url structure for products (as an example). I personally don't accept that answer from the dev team on the surface. If I have 5000 product pages then I'm not really interested in changing that URL structure unless it is ABSOLUTELY necessary. Sure, 301's work great but if you are trying to minimize potential downsides it would be better to not have to place 5000 301s.
I'd recommend considering content that isn't moving over. Have you done your homework on how much of it is getting traffic? Or, is everything moving over? When I switch platforms the goal for my teams is to make the switch in a way that the average user would never know. Google certainly will know when you have gone from volusion to magento but making it less noticeable to users is important. It is difficult enough to switch platforms so you don't really want to bring new potential CRO issues into the conversation.
I saw a person on here yesterday that had 10,000 404 errors after the switch. To me this is just poor planning. You should not have to wait for webmaster tools to tell you there is a 404 problem. Google has a history of penalizing sites that are inaccessible or have a large number of 404 errors for even a brief period of time. I had a blog that I purchased and switched the PHP handler on. After 3 weeks I realized that every post was getting 404 errors. I fixed the issue but never got back 1/2 the traffic I lost.
All in all, Google does a fantastic job of handling your changes. If your titles, content, and urls are the same for your main traffic pages then you should expect it to be a fairly seamless transition. Hope this helps.

Site Migration
Hi, I have been researching the best way to migrate six sites into one, since I have never done it, and I am frankly overwhelmed. Some resources say to do it incrementally, and a/b test; but I would prefer not to have to do it, as won't it present a disjointed representation for visitors? The previous sites are older and a bit clumsy compared to the new design and functionality in the new site. Can someone please tell me the right way to approach this? Or tell me the best resource for a step-by-step prep, migrate, and watch process? Thanks so much in advance!

URL categorization / subfolders
Hi Mozzers, We're currently in the process of a website redesign with new CMS and have the opportunity to change URL and structure. I would love some opinions as to what the best practise will be. A quick prerequisite, the website is entirely about France. French property, living, holidays, forum - everything. Therefore, we're unsure of the usage of the word France/French. Presently, we're running Classic ASP which allows for one subfolder then dynamic article ID. In my examples, I will take our activity holidays URL. At present this is /france-activity-holidays/DisplayArticle.asp?ID=12345. We know that DisplayArticle.asp?ID=12345 will simply become [article-title], however, its the preceding subfolders I would like some help with. Here are our thoughts on the options available. Can you please vote as to which you think is the best? /france-activity-holidays/ (one subfolder per category, as at present) /france/holidays/activity/ (always have a first subfolder with the word france) /holidays-to-france/activity-holidays/ (france in the primary subfolder) /holidays/activity-holidays-france/ (france in the secondary subfolder) /holidays/activity/ (because the whole website is about France, it is redundant to have /france/) /French-holidays/activity/ My gut feeling is either number 2 or 5. Concise, good for UX, OK for SEO. However, there is very little information around that is relevant to our sector. Thanks in advance! Matt

Bad site migration - what to do!
Hi Mozzers - I'm just looking at a site which has been damaged by a very poor site migration. Basically, the old URLs were 301'd to a page on the new website (not a 404) telling everyone the page no longer existed. They did not 301 old pages to equivalent new pages. So I just checked Google WMT and saw 1,000 crawl errors - basically the old URLs. This migration was done back in February, since when traffic to the website has never recovered. Should I fix this now? Is it worth implementing the correct 301s now, after such a timelapse?

Could a HTML <select>with large numbers of <option value="<url>">'s affect my organic rankings</option></select>
Hi there, I'm currently redesigning my website, and one particular pages lists hotels in New York. Some functionality I'm thinking of adding in is to let the user find hotels close to specific concert venues in New York. My current thinking is to provide the following select element on the page - selecting any one of the options will automatically redirect to my page for that concert venue. The purpose of this isn't to affect the organic traffic - I'm simply introducing this as a tool to help customers find the right hotel, but I certainly don't want it to have an adverse effect on my organic traffic. I'd love to know your thoughts on this. I must add that in certain cities, such as New York, there could be up to 450 different options in this select element. | <select onchange="location=options[selectedIndex].value;"> <option value="">Show convenient hotels for:</option> <option value="http://url1..">1492 New York</option> <option value="http://url2..">Abrons Arts Center</option> <option value="http://url3..">Ace of Clubs New York</option> <option value="http://url4..">Affairs Afloat</option> <option value="http://url5..">Affirmation Arts New York</option> <option value="http://url6..">Al Hirschfeld Theatre</option> <option value="http://url7..">Alice Tully Hall</option> .. .. ..</select> Many thanks Mike |

Optimal URLs for SEO and UX
We are considering restructuring the URL scheme on one of the websites we maintain. We have a few options. Currently news article URLs are as follows:
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | Peter264
http://domain.com/news/1234/article-title-name/ Download section URLs are as follows:
http://domain.com/downloads/files/1234/file-title-of-download-here/ Forum URLS:
http://forum.domain.com/forum/topic/1234/title-of-forum-topic-here/ We feel that these are a bit too long for both SEO and user experience. We want to remove as many directories from the URLs as possible. From experience, what do you recommend changing for the example URLs above? We have some ideas below...and we need to keep the ID in the URLs...however I know this is a little frustrating. Some ideas we have for news articles:
http://domain.com/news/article-title-shorter-1234
http://domain.com/article-title-shorter-n1234 Some ideas for the download pages:
http://domain.com/downloads/file-title-shorter-d1234
http://domain.com/downloads/files/file-title-shorter-1234
http://domain.com/file-title-shorter-d1234 Some ideas for the forum URLs:
http://forum.domain.com/topic-title-shorter-t1234
http://forum.domain.com/topic/topic-title-shorter-1234 What do you think of these suggestions? Any other URL ideas? Recommended URL length? The purpose of is question was to find the perfect URLs for the site we are working on; your thoughts, suggestions and tips are very much appreciated.0 -

Migrating a site
Hello, I have what a I think it's a noob question.. I have a medium size website and need to put it into maintenance for the next 2 months, and afterwards activate a completly new site. My client asked me to do this, cause the same people whoe run the constant flow of information on the site, are the ones who are going to develop the new site, so he wants to just close it out So... what are the steps for doing this with minimum impact on any SEO advances made this past months?.. How do I tell the search engines, Hey, just under maintenance for a while....then... i'm back in the game but this is my new structure. and the old one should go here
