What do I do about old content on my blog?
-
I run a blog: www.b2bsocialmediaguide.com. It's been going for 2.5 years and some of the old content is, frankly, dated! What do you recommend I do about it?
1. Update old articles with new, more relevant content and change the date?
2. Write new articles with the relevant content and forward the URLs from old articles to the new ones?
3. Do nothing.
4. Just add links to new content from old posts?
I don't want to lose link juice!
-
Thumbs up if you agree this would make a great YouMoz post. We'd love to see you other there too, if you're ever inclined.

Keep your old posts. There is nothing wrong with having a historical account of your topic. I can't stand everyone freaking out about old content and simply getting rid of it. Aren't there any historians still out there that enjoy examining where we've been?
Do this:
- Create new updated post that is current and represents how you want to present the info today
- Go to your old post and add a IMPORTANT Notice box at the top of the article that explains that things have changed since the original posting and visitors can find all the latest and greatest at the new URL (link).
This also protects your credibility and demonstrates how long you have been following your issues in your niche - golden!

I don't want to lose link juice!
Absolutely! And wasting content is even worse.
I would do #5.
5. Assess the content to determine it's value. Value to me includes....
-- are there links pointing to this content?
-- is there traffic arriving through these pages?
-- are visitors who arrive at my site through other pages consuming this content?
-- the quality of the content
After I assess the items above I will take different routes depending upon the findings.
A. If content does not have links, does not pull traffic and is not being consumed I will probably delete the content and redirect the page to index.html
B. If content has links, traffic and consumption then I will decide if it merely needs a few edits. If that can be done I will keep the page. And, if that can be done I will look to add improved images, special interest boxes, "Did you know?" boxes, links to other relevant pages on my website. KICK IT UP A NOTCH!
C. If content has links, traffic and consumption, AND THE SAME TITLE IS STILL A GREAT CHOICE... but the article is really outdated then I will rewrite from scratch and post on the same page, always trying to kick content, images and message up a huge notch on this successful page. Then I will promote this major rewrite on my homepage, in feature boxes around the site, in my RSS feed.
D. If content has links traffic and consumption, and the old title is no longer a good choice, then I will rewrite from scratch, publish on a new page and create a boldface roadblock link to it in the first few paragraphs of the old article... and do the full onsite promotion. Eventually when traffic to old page starts dying then I will redirect. I want to keep the traffic from that old title flowing in because some noobs, old farts and out-of-date people will still be searching for those out-of-date terms. Conversion rate on these people can be good because they are looking for help or a book or someone (like you) to be their guru. Also, with this choice you now have TWO pages pulling traffic for different search queries.
You see, there is no generic answer to this question. You must assess on a case-by-case basis. Be careful not to abandon the noobs, old farts and out-of-date people. They can be valuable traffic.

Should we add a weekly updated website blog (annotated re-postings) that mirrors our LinkedIn updates?.
We currently add original content to our website every couple of months in the form of long form articles we have guest authored for other reputable sites. We also maintain a LinkedIn company site with weekly updates in the form of annotated newsworthy re-postings. We are thinking of duplicating our LinkedIn update feed on our website as a blog in order to build more traffic and improve SEO. Hopefully the additional frequency of site updates will also help. Again, this additional content will be largely re purposed, with the exception of our value-added annotations. Good idea? Waste of time? Suggested tweaks? Should we link back to the original content source, no-follow, or no link?

In 2013 is guest blogging a worthwhile activity?
Guest blogging is one of the activities I’ve never undertaken only because I went down the avenue of thinking if you go to the time and effort of producing great content why would you want it to be on someone else’s site when it could be on yours. The only reason I’m thinking about undertaking guest blogging now is because with social media becoming more prominent and indeed I found it to be very useful, I can see the logic that if you have got a niche of expertise to write about and you find good quality websites that will accept your guest blogs maybe that is a productive thing to do by attracting relevant traffic and also producing quality links to your website Have you got any experience of Guest blogging recently? Would you spend your precious time writing for your own website or spend some of that time guest blogging on good quality related websites? And if so what you see the main advantage is being?

Is a Tumblr company blog good for SEO?
Hi, We are in the process of gaining coverage and visibility over our SaaS service. And one of the work we're doing is, very much standardly, having our pro blog with content. I see that most of companies/people are using a WordPress or a Blogger blog to achieve this. Another school is choosing Tumblr, which is a rising star. But then I can't help to feel that there is something wrong with Tumblr. It doesn't appear in Google search at all... It is never in the top of the searches. And sometimes even search for an exact match of a known post extract won't show the Tumblr link into google Search. What it means to me is that Tumblr has a very poor SEO-friendly policy. I was also reading in different posts that it was indeed the case. Tumblr is bad for SEO. I can't help but feeling confused and not really understanding how such a big social blogging engine couldn't get into google search... Or are they going twitter-like? I guess my question will be: "Is it good to have chosen Tumblr, or should I switch to either WordPress.com or Blogger using a custom DNS?" Thanks for reading.

Benefits and cons of hosting video content vs hosting via youtube
Hi if a site is hosting its own videos (not embedding them on youtube) is there less benefits then getting youtube to host it, and then embedding the youtube video. For instance: For benefits such as building channel authority, easy to rank the video in the search engines hosted on youtube, better opportunity to increase visitors and traffic and higher chance for the video to spread and rank for the keyword when hosted on youtube. What do you guys think?

How to track the performance of my guest blog posts?
I am doing some guest blog posting.and I want to measure how successful my effort was: when deciding the value of the links from the article Does google take into account how many times the article is read? Because some people do not bother taking further actions (like/share/clicks) even they like it. how do you guys check the amount of reader of those articles? I can't track this article views through analytics obviousely. On the other hand let say the article create valuable info to the readers (many people read it) but no likes/shares/bookmarks would this still be a successful article marketing?

Best practices to add Facebook comments to wordpress blog?
Our website (noahsdad.com) has a very large and active Facebook group (http://facebook.com/noahsdadcom). Often there are more comments on the Facebook posting of a link, than on the blog post itself. I try to get people go and leave comments on the blog, but they don't get it. So I'd like to try to find a way to get Facebook comments to transfer to our site. I"m not sure the best way to do this....either via a plug in, or via these instructions https://developers.facebook.com/attachment/Comments_Best_Practices_FINAL.pdf/ I'd just like to get it going..and not mess up the comment's I have now. (Also not everyone has Facebook, so I'd like them to still be able to comment the 'old' way (name/email). Hoping someone can help point me in the right direction with this. Thanks.

How effective is RSS feeds submission, links from Blog Directories?
I am wondering how effective rss feed submission (to RSS aggregators) is in terms of getting traffic and backlinks? Also, how about getting listed in blog directories? Do these tactics work anymore post Panda update ? Thanks, Supriya.
