Google Places - Add external location?
-
Hi Mozzers,
We operate in Belgium and just recently we also opened a location in the Netherlands. This is a trainingslocation but there is no staff present.
We want to add this location to our Google Places account. It seems we need to enter it is as different company profile.
Does Google have a problem with the fact that there is no staff present on adres of this company profile and the location is managed by our HQ in Belgium?

Ditto that. Sorry got tied up on some stuff & meant to reply. Miriam did a better job than I could have.

Hi Wellnesswooz,
I think the answer to your question may be found in the most recent iteration of the Google Places Quality Guidelines, which read:
"Do not create a listing or place your pin marker at a location where the business does not physically exist. P.O. Boxes are not considered accurate physical locations.Your business location should be staffed during its stated hours"
(bolded emphasis mine)
If what you are talking about is a non-staffed location, then it doesn't qualify for inclusion in Google's Local results. Exceptions to this would be something like a self-service ATM machine. Here is a link to the guidelines: https://support.google.com/places/answer/107528?hl=en
I am not quite sure I understand what you mean by 'other working areas'. Are you talking about setting a service radius like a plumber might do to show the different cities he serves? If so, this option is really only appropriate for Service Area Businesses (SABs) which travel to customers to serve them.
Google+ Local is really geared toward companies that transact business directly with customers, face-to-face. If this does not describe your business model or any of your locations, then it will be better for you to rely on organic, rather than Local, SEO. Hope this helps!

Interesting view. That would be correct if we where a shop or service provider. Yet we take our subscriptions online and manage everything from a distance. The trainings itself take place at this location. How could I know for sure if Google would find this a problem or not?
In Google Places, I can also select other working areas. Does this have the same effect on local rankings as a separate business profile?

I believe your answer will be found by viewing the second location the way an outside client, customer or interested person would. If there is no staff, is there a reason for anyone to come to your location? Does it have sign, or address on exterior door? An image from you and or verified by Google Street view may answer this.
Google Places is intended to be an index of actual physical locations, their attributes and something akin to word of mouth reputation. If your location receives no real traffic and or goes to all "consumers" then you will have a tough time. My Maps might help you determine location value.
So many people used additional locations (phantoms or actual satellites) to game the system so now Google is very suspicious. I have heard of a Google Place Vehicle showing up in a neighborhood mere days after someone edits, adds or changes a place location. Multiple listings can also cause problems for ranking, be careful, you don't want to dilute or bury your brand.

Will hreflang with a language and region allow Google to show the page to all users of that language regardless of region?
I'm launching translations on a website with the first translation being Brazilian Portuguese. If I use the following hreflang: If a user is outside of Brazil and has their browser language set to just Portuguese (Not Portuguese (Brazil)) will Google still serve them the Portuguese version of my pages in search results?

How To Rank A UK Website On Google.com (US)
Hi, I've done some research on this but couldn't find any definitive answer I can trust! We have a client who resides in the UK. They have '.com' domain, hosted on a UK server, using UK spelling. Their business objective for this year is to expand in the USA, including the opening of a warehouse over there. They are wanting us to rank their website on both Google.co.uk and Google.com (North America); besides changing the geolocation settings in GWT's, and building links from .com websites is there anything else we can do to increase their visibility on Google.com? Many thanks in advance, appreciated!

If I redirect based on IP will Google still crawl my international sites if I implement Hreflang
We are setting up several international sites. Ideally, we wouldn't set up any redirects, but if we have to (for merchandising reasons etc) I'd like to assess what the next best option would be. A secondary option could be that we implement the redirects based on IP. However, Google then wouldn't be able to access the content for all the international sites (we're setting up 6 in total) and would only index the .com site. I'm wondering whether the Hreflang annotations would still allow Google to find the International sites? If not, that's a lot of content we are not fully benefiting from. Another option could be that we treat the Googlebot user agent differently, but this would probably be considered as cloaking by the G-Man. If there are any other options, please let me know.

Why would a site lose rankings in U.S while maintaining rankings in other English locations (Canada & Australia)
What would cause a site to lose ranking in the U.S while maintaining top (1st page) positions in other English results countries such as Canada or Australia? Is this purely penguin related because of location of backlinks or are there other significant factors that could be in play? Would this rule out Panda as a cause because it's simply an "English language" targeted algo and not location dependent like backlinks (penguin)? Appreciate any insights

What is the best way to rank well on both Google.co.uk & Google.com?
I am working on a website that is primarily a UK based software company but is now expanding into the US. The website is a .com site and is not geo-targeted to any specific location. Currently the site ranks well on Google.co.uk for a number of the focus keywords. We are now targeting Google.com as well to increase visibility in the USA. The site is ranking number 1 for one of the focus terms on Google.co.uk but no where to be seen on Google.com but on another term the site ranks 3rd in both Google.co.uk and .com. There are a number of other terms that rank on the first page in Google.co.uk and on the 3rd or 4th page in Google.com. The server is located in Germany and I do not want to geotarget the site to the US as I am concerned this would have a negative impact on the .co.uk ranking. The site currently has a mix of .com and .co.uk links pointing back to the site, in actual fact possibly more links actually come from US sites already. My original plan was to just focus on building links back to the target pages from US sites rather than creating a US folder on the site and geotargeting that section of the site in WMT and having to build page authority for a completely new page with no existing backlinks. But now that I have a number 1 ranking on .co.uk and the same term not ranking at all in .com as well as a postion 3 ranking for a term in both .co.uk and .com I am slightly confused as to the best options. Any help, advice, opinions would be greatly appreciated.
