Keywords in google's webmaster tools

how heavily do the list of keywords in google's webmaster tools reflect your ranking for those keywords? For example see this screenshot:

we are a self storage company, and our first two keywords in google's webmaster tools are storage and self. the problem is nobody searches for self storage (from my keyword research). most people search for "storage +cityname" like "storage toronto" for example.
so i guess my question would be this:
would it be effective to change all the instances of "Self" on our website to "Toronto" or other city names to try to push the city names higher in google's webmaster tools keywords rank?

I find that a lot of the data in webmaster tools is not that helpful. It takes some time to sort through and figure out what can help you and what can't. Some of my suggested keywords are things that no one would search for. If I optimized my site for these keywords it would just look silly.
Similarly, don't forget that the Adwords Keyword tool is not accurate at all when it comes to search volume. For my main keyword, it tells me that I should have 12,000 searches per month. I am number one for this keyword and yet I get 5000 impressions per month.
If you are focusing on targeting local searches, do you have a local listing? This is REALLY important. It's not hard to optimize your local listing so that you appear at or the near top for several terms.

I agree that you are doing many of the right things.
As it happens, I have many Toronto small business clients who compete with much larger players.
In your case, I would suggest:

A greater focus on Yelp and Google Places reviews. You need more recent reviews. And you can go beyond soliciting reviews on your blog.

Consider a 90 second video for your home page that summarizes the value proposition and what sets you apart. It should include testimonials. See www.dccentre.ca for an example. See

for a YouTube Channel of 90 second videos focussing on consumer tips.
Rationale: Your site is excellent, but very dense and text heavy. It may be scaring people away. Videos might help. (And be sure to include Google video Maps) I would also experiment with cutting back on content and carefuly monitoring changes in your bounce rate.
- Experiment with Google adwords if you have not already done so. Agencies like mine benefit from an in-house Google team that does the initial campaign set up and tweaks for 30 days. You might want to contact one. Just watch out for big mark ups!

I agree with Alan; you are definitely on the right path. Google Webmaster Tools is only one of many signals you can check. Check out the rankings report Page from SEOMOZ to maximize your use of their Web App as I see you are a PRO member and this is a MUST READ. Also Google Insights, Google Adwords Keyword Tool, and Wordtracker are very helpful in identifying opportunities and search metrics. Then Check your On page Grade in the web app for your specific page and term and try to optimize for one or two keyword phrases per page only.

Actually you appear do be doing things right (I did a cursory check of your sit). I wouldn't worry that you see the single words in the Google Webmaster system - it's just how their system evaluates content. Self Storage is what you do, so both words occur repeatedly throughout the site. And that's natural and proper. So for organic clicks, don't be concerned that you're showing up for words that don't by themselves directly relate to your offerings. There are probably millions of combinations of other words on your site that you show up for that aren't related to your site.
What matters is how well you show up for the phrases you care about. And then focus on building content, inbound links, and social engagement around those, as well as brand name...

How is it possible to rank first for a keyword, when the keyword isn't written on the page?
I noticed that one of our competitors is ranking in first position for a keyword but when looking on the page grader. The exact keyword is not used on the page at all (or in title, URL etc.). How is this possible, when other sites have content with those exact words?

Focus Keyword

How would you optimise a site for close variations of a keyword, such as [data capture + application/app/software/technology/tool/solution]
Hey all, We're a data capture app looking to optimise our site: akkroo.com. There are lots of industry-specific & use-case-based content pages we can create, but how should we optimise our site to capture traffic for keywords that could (almost) be classified as synonyms? Particularly, I'm thinking keywords such as: data capture app data capture application data capture software data capture tool data capture tools data capture technology etc. My industry-specific pages will all have completely unique content, but I'm struggling to work out how I should architecture pages that target keywords that are almost identical, such as the list above. The content on these pages would technically be 'unique', but each page would be very similar to one another. And how would we link to these pages internally? I can't really see it adding to the user experience, but I can't see how I can target all of these keywords without having individual pages for each... What's your keyword research system?
What is your process for keyword research? I used Google's Keyword Research Tool for the bulk of my research in the past, so I'm pretty lost right now. However, I'm on the ground level of developing a content strategy for my company's website refresh, and this is a great chance to start from scratch with a sound process. The goal, of course, would be not to respond to keywords, but rather, letting holistic keyword research guide our content strategy. But obviously, I still want to grab low-hanging fruit where I can and beef up weaker parts of the site where possible. After reading Ruth Burr's excellent post last week, I'm testing a few tools, and so far am leaning toward Wordtracker for volume/competition data, cross-referenced with Moz's ranking reporting. However, I still need to check out SEMRush and get friendlier with Keyword Planner. I just want a little SEO angel to fall out of the sky and give me a recipe to follow. No? In case someone asks, my current goal is to identify our target audience's search habits to better reach them through content on our company website. While we serve several communities and do plan to geotarget, we're not there yet. So while I'm glad we have that option on Keyword Planner, there's not much I can do with it today.

How to get search volume in Google's keyword planner
I want to know the search volume for ~1000 keywords that I discovered via ubersuggest. Yesterday I could have done this in 5 minutes, but I can't seem to get it to work in the new Google tool and would love some advice. When I either upload or copy and paste my list into the tool I can get it to give me search ideas with volume, but it has all the keywords I am uploading as 0 search volume (when I know that is not true and some of them have thousands of searches). I've tried "entering keywords to see how they perform" and also "searching for keyword ideas" (the second just because the first didn't try after my 10 tries) Any ideas about what I am doing wrong?

Article rewrite tools: do they really do the job to meet google's requirements?
Dear all, I need to produce around 100 articles. I came across several tools which replace some of the words with synonyms. 1- How many words does it need to replace out of 100 words? 2- Which tools do you recommend? 3- Human re writers seems to use the same tools. Google Keyword tool data + No. 1 Serp rank =/= to taffic on landing page
So a keyword we are targeting "painted bedroom furniture" google keyword tool says gets 480 exact local searches (and 880 broad), and in the same local google we have ranked 1st for months (and currently we are 2nd and 3rd too), but looking at the google analytics that landing page has only gotten 78 unique page views from searches and only 21 from "painted bedroom furniture" . (the 2nd link gets 12 page views and the 3rd gets none, from that keyword) Now for me that does not make sense! For other keyword which we rank No.1 the keyword data and analytics generally match/make sense. Is there something I'm missing?

How trustworthy is Google's Keyword Tool for organic search research?
Can anyone (not Google affliated) explain to me where Google's data really comes from in their Keyword Tool? Is it at all based on organic search? Or only on Google Ads related data? I know there was some controversy back in June '10 and the Google remedied the return of suggested keywords but I can't seem to get a clear answer (other than from the Google blog itself) whether the search volumes returned are truly indicative of organic search. Am I relying on the wrong tool? Do those more savvy than I only rely on the keyword tool for PPC research. Please help! I'm obsessing over my numbers here. 🙂
