Does Gemvara really change URL when you customize the ring?
-
Hi,
I was looking at Gemvara.com which is supposed to be a really great e-commerce site (including SEO wise) and I noticed it changes url as you customize the ring (see product page example).
Do they really change the URL? (I don't see page refresh)
Is it recommended to do so? (for e-commerce sites whenever you change shirt color, customize a computer etc.)
Thanks

That is definitely rendered, you can tell because it is so perfect and there are not any weld lines for the prongs. I think most internet companies do this so they do not have to carry stock.
-
Looks great, I only knew about Rhino.
Do you think they used the same technology here:
http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/solitaire/14k-white-gold-2mm-knife-edge-solitaire-engagement-ring-six-prong-item-7990 -
They are all rendered in gemvision like gemvara's images, just make a macro that changes the angle a set number of degrees and renders, I think we used 10 degrees. Check this out, it is what a lot of people use. http://gemvision.com/matrix/

I understand the Java rotation but it means (I assume) that you had to take dozens of pictures in exactly the same lighting and without moving the item. Its crazy... (though the result is stunning)
-
The 3d rotation actually uses this library, it is in a module form for Prestashop. http://www.uize.com/examples/3d-rotation-viewer.html As far as not changing for the stone, the project never got that far, I was off of it before all of the features were added. It looks like they do not have another developer or they have not been added yet.
-
Thanks for the detailed explanation.
I see that in Vaja you change the URL only when a metal was changed and not the stone. I do love the 360. May i ask it was done? (36 images per item? How did you rotate it?)

I think a normal site can get away with it, if it is done correctly. I developed a site for a jewelry company that uses something similar. But their budget ran out before I could totally implement everything, I only did very limited SEO on the site before they moved the SEO to India (they are an Indian company themselves).
One thing I think can one up Gemvara is the descriptions. Take this description from Gemvara from this page http://www.gemvara.com/jewelry/emerald-cut-lisa-ring-6mm-gem/emerald-cut-emerald-platinum-ring/gfwx9
"This simple solitaire engagement ring is gorgeous for everyday wear and features a single emerald-cut gemstone. It is carefully handcrafted in your choice of gems and metals."
This description is used for every combination of that ring. Which more than likely draws a duplicate content penalty for the other pages (which in itself does not mean that they won't be indexed, it just means they won't be ranked as high). Now lets first look at the Gemvara url and put what we know about SEO in to it. gfwx9, that is meaningless to both you and I, it is no more than trash on the url, just watering it down. Lets look at the structure of the url, sitename.com/jewelry/RINGSTYLE/default-ring-parameters If you notice how the URL for that page works, if you change the style to white gold the url becomes, http://www.gemvara.com/jewelry/emerald-cut-lisa-ring-6mm-gem/emerald-cut-emerald-18k-white-gold-ring/gv3cm so it is safe to lose the trash at the end of the url.
Now for the description, it does not change, the only on site changes are the image, and the selection to the left of the piece. What if you used a variable system similar to how a content spinner worked and changed out words based on the metal or stone selection. I am going to caps the changed out words.
For a Yellow Gold and Diamond
This TRADITIONAL solitaire engagement ring is BEAUTIFUL for everyday wear and features a single emerald-cut DIAMOND. It is carefully handcrafted in SOLID 14KT GOLD.
For a White Gold and Diamond
This MODERN solitaire engagement ring is LONGING for everyday wear and features a single emerald-cut DIAMOND. It is carefully handcrafted in SOLID 14KT WHITE GOLD.
For Platinum and Ruby
This LAVISH solitaire engagement ring is STUNNING for everyday wear and features a single emerald-cut RUBY. It is carefully handcrafted in EXQUISITE PLATINUM.
I have never been known for my writing abilities, but I think you get the drift. I think if you implemented a system like this you would be sure to actually get more pages indexed with combinations than they have. For reference here is the site I was referring to with my short term SEO job. http://vajajewelry.com/women-s-rings/287-the-siren.html One thing, I would consider adding, although I do not like how it is done on this site, is the 360 rotation. This one uses 36 files to make it look smooth, everything is rendered in jewelry cad.
-
I started looking at them because I saw at Quora someone mentioning that one of their strengths is that they generated THOUSANDS of pages in a way that every combination of gems with a ring design is a different page - when you multiply the options (permutation) the result is an astounding number of pages (even though these pages barely have texts).
What do you think of this method?
I believe that today it is something that only the big companies can get a way with it...
-
Natively they won't get crawled because of the way they are done, but if they are added to the site map they will. I cannot seem to locate gemvara's sitemap on their server to confirm they have them added to the site map.
Think of them as a landing page that you have optimized, but does not link to the rest of your site.
Run these terms through google and you can see that they are indexed.
site:http://www.gemvara.com/jewelry/rich-thin-band/14k-white-gold-ring-with-aquamarine/
site:http://www.gemvara.com/jewelry/lotus-ring/round-black-diamond-14k-white-gold-ring-with-diamond/
From the queries I did, it seems that some are indexed and some are not, but I have no way of knowing that ages of the pages either, because several I came across were not indexed at all for any combination. One thing to keep in mind for their industry Gemvara has about the largest paid advertising budget.

Thanks!
But what about Google's bot? Will he crawl it? Is it considered internal linking?
It is not done by Href's but rather by Javascript and AJAX... -
Yes, they are using a variable tied to the url so that you can access the site and see the combination that has been selected. This is a html5 only thing. You can read more about it here, http://stackoverflow.com/questions/136458/change-the-url-in-the-browser-without-loading-the-new-page-using-javascript/4222584#4222584

Has there been an algorithm change in the last week?
Hi guys, Rankings for almost half of our targeted keywords have gone down this week vs. last week. I have checked a couple of rank trackers and all are reporting some serious movement in Google's algorithms during this period. Does anyone have any further information on this that can help me restore our rankings? I haven't read anything in regards to any 'major' pending updates. Many thanks in advance, Jack

Internal links and URL shortners
Hi guys, what are your thoughts using bit.ly links as internal links on blog posts of a website? Some posts have 4/5 bit.ly links going to other pages of our website (noindexed pages). I have nofollowed them so no seo value is lost, also the links are going to noindexed pages so no need to pass seo value directly. However what are your thoughts on how Google will see internal links which have essential become re-direct links? They are bit.ly links going to result pages basically. Am I also to assume the tracking for internal links would also be better using google analytics functionality? is bit.ly accurate for tracking clicks? Any advice much appreciated, I just wanted to double check this.

Spaces in URL line
Hi Gurus, I recently made the mistake of putting a space into a URL line between two words that make up my primary key word. Think www.example.com/Jelly Donuts/mmmNice.php instead of www.example.com/JellyDonuts/mmmNice.php This mistake now needed fixing to www.example.com/Jelly Donuts/mmmNice.php to pass W3, but has been in place for a while but most articles/documents under 'Jelly Donuts' are not ranking well (which is probably the obvious outcome of the mistake). I am wondering whether the best solution from an SEO ranking viewpoint is to: 1. Change the article directory immediately to www.example.com/JellyDonuts/mmmNice.php and rel=canonical each article to the new correct URL. Take out the 'trash' using robots.txt or to 301 www.example.com/Jelly Donut to the www.example.com/JellyDonut directory? or perhaps something else? Thanks in advance for your help with this sticky (but tasty) conundrum, Brad

Where to put a page ID in a URL?
Hello, My company is going to change URLs to example.com/category or example.com/product. When we will change the URLs to product or category pages somehow we have to check whether the requested page is from category table in DB or from products table (this gives much speed to page load time). So we have to choose how to make the different product and category pages.

Programmers said that we need to insert id to URL. So the question is: Which is the better way to place an id to an URL? example.com/product-name?id=111 example.com/product-name/111 example.com/product_name-111 Or maybe we should use some other punctuation mark to separate id from product name? p.s. I have read Dynamic URLs vs. static URLs by Google and it still didn't answered which is the best for all of the pages. Somehow others solve this problem by typing only the names to the URL, but could anyone tell what that technology should be?0 -
Lots of incorrect urls indexed - Googlebot found an extremely high number of URLs on your site
Hi, Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Basically, our rankings and traffic etc have been dropping massively recently google sent us a message stating " Googlebot found an extremely high number of URLs on your site". This first highligted us to the problem that for some reason our eCommerce site has recently generated loads (potentially thousands) of rubbish urls hencing giving us duplication everywhere which google is obviously penalizing us with in the terms of rankings dropping etc etc. Our developer is trying to find the route cause of this but my concern is, How do we get rid of all these bogus urls ?. If we use GWT to remove urls it's going to take years. We have just amended our Robot txt file to exclude them going forward but they have already been indexed so I need to know do we put a redirect 301 on them and also a HTTP Code 404 to tell google they don't exist ? Do we also put a No Index on the pages or what . what is the best solution .? A couple of example of our problems are here : In Google type - site:bestathire.co.uk inurl:"br" You will see 107 results. This is one of many lot we need to get rid of. Also - site:bestathire.co.uk intitle:"All items from this hire company" Shows 25,300 indexed pages we need to get rid of Another thing to help tidy this mess up going forward is to improve on our pagination work. Our Site uses Rel=Next and Rel=Prev but no concanical. As a belt and braces approach, should we also put concanical tags on our category pages whereby there are more than 1 page. I was thinking of doing it on the Page 1 of our most important pages or the View all or both ?. Whats' the general consenus ? Any advice on both points greatly appreciated? thanks Sarah.

URL Shorteners. Are they SEO Friendly?
Do URL shortener services like bit.ly act as 301 redirects? I was thinking about utilizing one for longer query based URLs and didn't want to risk losing link juice. Thanks for the insight! Regards - Kyle

Spammy? Long URLs
Hi All: Is it true that URLs such as this following one are viewed as "spammy" (besides being too long) and that such URLs will negatively affect ranks for keywords and page ranks: http://www.repairsuniverse.com/ipod-parts-ipod-touch-replacement-repair-parts-ipod-touch-1st-gen-replacement-repair-parts.html My thinking is that the page will perform better once it is 301 redirected to a shorter page name, such as: http://www.repairsuniverse.com/ipod-touch-1G-replacement-parts.html It also appears that these long URLs are also more likely to break, creating unnecessary 404s. <colgroup><col width="301"></colgroup> Thanks for your insight on this issue!

Limiting URLS in the HTML Sitemap?
So I started making a sitemap for our new golf site, which has quite a few "low level" pages (about 100 for the golf courses that exist in the area, and then about 50 for course architects), etc etc. My question/open discussion is simple. In a sitemap that already has about 50 links, should we include these other low level 150 links? Of course, the link to the "Golf Courses" is there, along with a link to the "Course Architects" MAIN pages (which, subdivides on THOSE pages.) I have read the limit is around 150 links on the sitemap.html page and while it would be nice to rank long tail for the Golf Courses. All in all, our site architecture itself is easily crawlable as well. So the main question is just to include ALL the links or just the main ones? Thoughts?
