What is the current thinking about translated versions of pages? Is it necessary

My company is about to do a big push in China. We can get our homepage translated in Chinese at a very reasonable price. My questions are:
- Is it worth it? Do browsers to an adequately job of translating pages?
If it is worth it:
- Can someone suggest a good post explaining what to do with the translation?
- What are the SEO implications?

There are a few ways to do it that have advantages and disadvantages. Your best best is probably to serve users based on their location, rather than their language -- since someone browsing in Chinese in another country probably has no use for the China based version of your site.
I know that can be done through Javascript, and I imagine there are other ways to do it. I'm not an expert on that, but there is a lot of information out there about it.

This is a big question and I'll do my best to answer it as much as I can.
First off, it's VERY important. Mandarin to English Translation within browsers is terrible (I say this having lived in Beijing and worked as an English Language web marketer there). Make sure your cheap translation is done by someone who is Bilingual and proficient in translating English to Simple Chinese, otherwise you can end up with a translation that doesn't make grammatical sense (the differences in grammar and characters make accurate translation difficult).
SEO is different in different languages, you have to consider what users will be searching for. Also keep in mind that many people will be searching with Baidu or even Bing rather than Google (which is semi-blocked in China), and you will have to adjust your SEO tactics accordingly. Baidu almost exclusively indexes and serves pages in Simple Chinese, (the language of their users) so a good translation is crucial. Also -- you're going to have to do some link building from Chinese Language sites, your English Language link profile will not do you much good.
It's takes a long time, but if you can get a regional address (ie .cn) that is a big trust signal. Local hosting also helps.
Finally, it's important to realize that China is a decently developed space with a lot of national pride. You're not going to have a great user experience if your pages are poorly translated, especially if there is a local alternative. If you want to do business in China, make the investment in an excellent translation.

Should Hreflang x-default be on every page of every country for an International company?
UPDATED 4/29/2019 4:33 PM I had made to many copy and pastes. Product pages are corrected Upon researching the hreflang x-default tag, I am getting some muddy results for implementation on an international company site older results say just homepage or the country selector but…. My Question/Direction going forward for the International Site I am working on: I believe I can to put x-default all the pages of every country and point it to the default language page for areas that are not covered with our current sites. How to interlink 16 different language versions of site?
I remember that Matt Cutts recommended against interlinking many language versions of a site.

Considering that google now also crawls javascript links, what is best way to implement interlinking? I still see otherwhise extremely well optimized large sites interlinking to more than 10 different language versions e.g. zalando.de, but also booking.com (even though here on same domain). Currently we have an expandable css dropdown in the footer interlinking 16 different language versions with different TLD. Would you be concerned? What would you suggest how to interlink domains (for user link would be useful)?0 -

Are my translated pages damaging my ranking?
Hi there, I have a site in English but with duplicates in different languages. The first problem is that these translated versions of my site receive no ranking on google stars (while the english does) - why is this? The second problem is that SEOmoz counts the errors on my site and then duplicates this error count for all the translated versions of my site - meaning I have a huge amount of errors (too many on-page links). Add this to the fact that I use affilite ID´s to track different types of traffic to my site - so all page urls in english and other languages, with an affiliate id on the end of the url, count as an error. This means I have a huge amount of on page errors indicated by SEOmoz, plus no ranking for my translated pages - I think this is really harming my overall ranking and site trust. What are your opinions on this?

Non US site pages indexed in US Google search
Hi, We are having a global site wide issue with non US site pages being indexed by Google and served up in US search results. Conversley, we have US en pages showing in the Japan Google search results. We currently us IP detect to direct users to the correct regional site but it isn't effective if the users are entering through an incorrect regional page. At the top of each or our pages we have a drop down menu to allow users to manually select their preferred region. Is it possible that Google Bot is crawling these links and indexing these other regional pages as US and not detecting it due to our URL structure? Below are examples of two of our URLs for reference - one from Canada, the other from the US /ca/en/prod4130078/2500058/catalog50008/ /us/en/prod4130078/2500058/catalog20038/ If that is, in fact, what is happening, would setting the links within the drop down to 'no follow' address the problem?
