Can 302's Negate Spam Link Profile?
-
To make a long story short, the previous SEO company we hired spammed us on LOTS of crappy links, many of which are still indexed. We're currently in the act of removing these links before we receive a manual spam penalty/notification + building new, stronger links to balance out our profile.
While most of these garbage links were sent to our homepage, many are linking our Services page (and a bunch to our .com/sitemap.html for some reason, lol).
Now we're in the midst of updating our entire website and the permalinks are going to change. While I'd normally 301 our old links to the new ones, Id rather not bring the horrible link profile with it if at all possible.
Would a simple 302 redirect effectively dodge the bad juju from these spam links to our Services page since they pass 0 juice? Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Hey Carson,
Thanks for the response. 404/410ing was going to be my game plan initially, but I was curious if a 302 was "better" than returning dead pages. In either case, it's only a few pages so I don't think it matters much. Our traffic was from this page being used across our local citations which did receive referral traffic. They've since been changed to our root URL, so no worries on not 301'ing or 302'ing that link. 404 it is.
The majority of the bad links are to our root domain, so I've been busy lately sending removal requests and such and preparing out disavow sheets. I was hoping for an "easier" fix to simply get rid of the dead pages, but killing them does indeed seem best.
I guess I'll go with the original plan to kill the pages which have the bulk of the spammy links, 301 the "cleaner" old structures without links aimed at them, and continue trying to remove the spammy links to the root URL.
Thanks for the input!

Hi there,
Sorry, I thought I answered this! I think I lost my internet connection for a bit.
On pages where you have no good links you want to salvage AND no significant incoming (organic/referred) traffic, I would just return a 410 response code and kill them off entirely.
On pages where you have no good links but you do receive traffic, I would 302 redirect them.
On pages with good and bad links, I would either leave them (200) or 301 redirect them, clean up the links as best you can, and disavow those spammy domains (or pages, in fewer cases) that are spammy if they fail to take their links down.
Hope that helps!

Does anyone have any insight into this issue?

Hey George,
Thanks for the response.
1. I am not concerned with the old link structure losing juice from quality links as their simply are none. The only links built to our non-root URL are spam from the SEO package that was purchased in the past. And even if there were a few decent links, the ratio between quality and spam is so out of whack that it'd be a worthy venture if we could ditch the spam links IMO.
Also, the non-root URL pages these links have targeted that I want to 302 aren't anything I'm interested in ranking for down the line. They were our About Us pages and our Sitemap. I'd just like to distance our domain from these spam links at any cost and start "fresh."
2. The upgraded page has been completely rewritten, so there's no risk of duplicate content issues when the new site goes live. It's entirely different from the current version. The old URL is also going to be removed from the domain entirely, so I'd imagine Google would eventually remove it from the index.
I'm planning on submitting a disavow sheet down the line, but that's a last resort if link removal and tactics like these can't help clean up my profile.
Thanks for the help.

Hi,
You're far from being alone with the issues you described, but personally I wouldn't recommend what you're suggesting:
- Using a 302 from the old to new URL structure will impact every link pointing at the old URLs be they a quality or spam backlink.
- Using a 302 rather than a 301 means there's a good chance that Google will index both the old and new URLs and cause duplicate content and PageRank splitting issues. This is likely to make things worse for you.
If I was you I'd disavow the spam links per Google's policy (https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/2648487?hl=en), set up 301s to your new URLs and following a bit of patience, start your SEO afresh with a clean slate.
George

Arrrg . . . Just can't seem to get there
http://www.electricianinperth.com.au is one site that me and my colleagues are constantly struggling with. It has a page rank of 5 which beats a majority of the competitors, but when it comes to Google Australia searches such as Perth Electrician and Electrician Perth etc etc, we just can't seem to get there and the rankings keep fluctuating and dropping. We backlink and update the pages on a regular basis Any ideas? - Could it be the custom Wordpress/CMS system?

Link building for a 'boring' eCommerce site
Hey all, I'm in need of some serious inspiration and I'm hoping one of you generous people can help. We're looking to do a spot of link building for an eCommerce site which I would describe (without putting it down too much) as 'boring'. This isn't our fault per se as the site sells printer cartridges and there's only a certain amount of excitement such a product can create. As a result natural linkbuilding is quite tricky, especially when it comes to creating links to anything other than our homepage. For the past couple of years we have focused on creating good content and indeed have a thriving database of hundreds of helpful articles and videos on the site. These are generating decent traffic (and rank #1 for many different help related search terms) but the problem with these articles is that they don’t convert in to sales at all well. I’m also conscious that it will ultimately end in us developing a link profile which would classify us as a printer repair resource rather than cartridge sales website. I have read numerous guides on Moz but they all tend to focus on products which are a little sexier than those that we sell. Getting someone to share and link to a truly unique product would be incredibly easy compared with asking someone to engage, share and link to the latest Epson cartridge. I started writing articles on some decent quality business blogs however the links given don’t look particularly natural and the link would always be to our homepage. We have the staff and the time but we built a whole host of rubbish links back before Penguin and I want to ensure that we are going to head in the right direction before embarking on something new. If you had a site which was really dull how would you devise a link building strategy that was relevant and, most importantly, natural? Thanks for your help. Chris

Dealing with spam link attack
Last year I noticed that overnight my site was backlinked by 1000's of spammy links.
Link Building | | chuckstar_za
All with same anchor text and all really awful unrelated sites (law, money, mobile phone, pr0n sites, etc). I've not been hit with any penalties (or at least been messaged with anything to that effect), and I still float around top 10 for that anchor text, but I don't like having 1000's of spammy links with exact anchor text pointing to my site. Especially when all the other competitors have a fraction of the number of links. What would be the best way to combat these links before they do serious damage to my rankings.

Links from spam sites
Hi! Thank you in advance for your help. Few months ago we suffered a content spam attack. Now, We have discovered that we have imbound links pointing the spam content from external spam and untrusted sites. Could be this affect our ranking? In this case... How can we notify to Google that we refuse these imbound links? Cheers, Luis

★Does syndication of a news features from high Profile site like TechCrunch have a negative SEO impact?
As a co-founder of a startup that is weekly featured on high page rank news sites such as TechCrunch, The Next Web, TreeHugger , Yahoo News etc. These types of write ups are "SEO Gold" as they are high page rank sites with high relevancy to our sector and with unique good quality anchor text and copy. However... Within hours of each post going live the content and links are syndicated either via RSS or scraped and appear as duplicate content on in some cases 100's of very low quality and low relevancy content aggregation sites. To give you an example here are just two of the sites that are now appearing as linking domains due to this syndicated content and the links included in the article. Examples : Eco Market, The “Etsy For Eco,” Rebrands, Revamps, Raises & Prepares A U.S. Launch Sarah Perez | Technology | Page 4 The above are just a couple of examples amongst 100's that result from each feature. I would like to hear you opinion on if these links would be considered natural and you feel I should not take action or if you think these need removing by contacting the webmasters or disavowing the links? I am sure I cant be alone in having this problem and look forward to hearing you advice and tips

Phantom spam links
All, Open site explorer is showing a very spammy link profile for one of my clients, however, when I click through to the actual pages I don't see the links or even the anchor text. The client has not hired anyone to do clean up on the site and is not yet aware of the links. Has anyone had similar experiences? John

Is it better to link back to the root domain, or the specific page you're optimizing for?
I'm working on a project our site - building links for iPhone Repair. For the term "iphone repair miami" - is it more ideal to link to the root domain (xxx.com) or to the subpage that is about iPhone Repair (xxx.com/iphone-repair)? I would imagine the latter - but obviously that page has less authority than the root. Thanks!
