Can appropriate alt text be considered keyword stuffing?
-
Hi all,
I just used the Moz page grader on this page: http://giavan.com/collections/earrings/pearl
for the keyword "pearl earrings". It's grading it a "B" and the most important issue is "Avoid Keyword Stuffing in Document". The keyword appears once in the title, once in the H1 tag, twice in the body and 31 times in alt image text. We've recently been taking the time to add alt text to all product images by simply copying the product name. So if the product name is "Pearl & Crystal Beaded Drop Earrings", that text is copied and pasted as the product image's alt text. This seemed like the best way because it's highly descriptive and obviously, quick to implement. But if search engines see this as keyword stuffing, I guess we should rethink it.
I don't know why Google would have a problem with this - it doesn't negatively affect the user experience and clearly those alt tag are serving a specific purpose. Still, the Moz grader doesn't seem to like it so if anyone knows the best way to handle this (or ignore it?) I'd really appreciate your help. Thanks!

I believe (please correct me if I'm wrong) that the page grader looks at the ratio of keywords to other text, not just a simple case of counting the number of times a keyword is used on the page - a 200 word page with 15 instances of the keyword would look stuffed, but a 2000 word page with 15 instances of the keyword (and its variations) would not look over stuffed - so long as you don't start listing keywords for the sake of it (this happens a lot with local optimisation - wood flooring london, wood flooring manchester, wood flooring birmingham, etc etc - yuk!)
Hope this helps explain my suggestion.

That's correct, each alt tag takes the product name, so all the images have different alt text. I think my question really comes down to - Why is the Moz page grader considering this keyword stuffing?
Increasing the text to alt tag ratio won't reduce the number of instances of "pearl earrings", so the page grader will still count the instances of this keyword and consider that number too high. At this point, I'm not going to worry about it. But it seems like descriptive image alt text shouldn't count as keyword stuffing because these are the best possible descriptions of the images.

To get this clear in my head, are you saying that your alt tags take the product name, not that all alt tags are identical?
If the former, then I think you've done the right thing (though I am keen to be corrected if I am wrong) because the reason alt tags exist is to describe the pictures on the page so that people who are visually impaired can still interpret the page correctly and enjoy a similar experience to those of us that can see them.
If your alt tags are identical to one another then you have got it wrong! Make sure your alt tags describe the content on your image.
If the Moz tool is saying your page is stuffed full of 'pearl earrings' then you may need to increase the text to alt tag ratio (seeing as it's the pearl earrings in alt tags that appear to be the problem). Make sure all your product descriptions are unique, as this can be beneficial.
Hope this helps!

Ok, if you are including the same name on images, they not to do that as image name is also considered as the part of the content.
On your website it might look good but images normally get crawled in Google Images and when you are putting the same name on all images it will be difficult for Google understand what image is for what and it might spam the results in Google images for that key phrases.
Hope I cleared my point.

Comparing New vs. Old Keyword Difficulty Scores
We've had a few questions regarding the new Keyword Difficulty score used in Keyword Explorer, and how it compares to the old score in our stand-alone Keyword Difficulty tool. Specifically, people want to know why some scores are much lower using the new tool. There a general discussion of the math behind the tool in this post: Keyword Research in 2016: Going Beyond Guesswork One of the problems we had with the original Keyword Difficulty score is that, because it's based on our Page Authority (PA) score and PA tends toward the middle of the 0-100 range, Difficulty got a bit bunched up. A Difficulty score in the low-to-mid 20s (via the old tool) is actually very low. So, we set out to re-scale the new tool to broaden that score and use more of the 0-100 range. We hoped this would allow more granularity and better comparisons. While the logic is sound, we're concerned that we may have been too aggressive in this re-scaling, given recent feedback. So, we're going to be analyzing a large set of keywords (anonymously, of course) that people have run through the tool to see if too many Difficulty scores seem too low. If they do, we'll make some adjustments to the math. In the meantime, please be aware that low scores may appear lower in the new tool and very high scores may appear higher. We wanted to address some of the limitations in V1 and feedback over the years, and so the old and new scores really can't be compared directly in a meaningful way. We're sorry for any confusion that has caused, and we will re-evaluate if necessary.

Anyone know how/where to get keyword yield ratio?
I'm trying to incorporate keyword yield ratio (the ratio of keywords to pages yielding search traffic) in my seo report. I want to be able to compare on a monthly basis the percentage ratio of keywords to a landing page yielding search traffic. So for example, in July we might have 5 keywords that earned a click to landing page A. But in September, the number of keywords grew to 8 keywords that earned a click to landing A. I would like to be able to report monthly on the % ratio growth of number of keywords to landing pages that yield search traffic. Aim is to grow # of keywords per page... Is there a way I can get this data through seomoz tools or google analytics? Thanks, Gemma

Strange Ranking On 1st Page Of Google For Competitive Keyword
Hey all, So, I've noticed a site ranking on the first page in Google for a keyword that I have been targeting for years. The keyword is "mixtapes" and pretty competitive. The site, http://www.newyorkmixtapes.com is ranking around #4 in Google. It seemed odd to me so I looked into the site using some of the tools here. Open Explorer showed that they have minimal links. The actual site is pretty spammy also. Does anyone have any idea how this site ranked so high so fast? Is it ranking because I am located in New York? Does Google still put lots of weight on exact match domains? It's just been bothering me because it's a keyword that I put a lot of work into and then the site rolls around an ranks well for it with barely any backlinks. I just wanted to put it out there and see if I'm missing something obvious. Thanks everyone!

Can seomozpro not just give me a full list of backlinks?
I got seomozpro so I could see a full list of backlinks for various websites. Not the top 25 most important etc, as I have different ideas on which are the most important. Is this possible?

Why can't we access metrics in the API that are available in the mozbar?
For example, the Chrome/Firefox mozbar uses peid (Root Domain External Links) but the api doesn't allow this. I've done a little bit of reverse engeniering and it looks like the accessID for the mozbar (when logged in as a pro member) is "pro-xxxx". Does this mean that each pro account has its own accessid/secret key? If so, when will pro members have access to that? I've created a tool that I use for deciding which expired domains to buy and it uses all of the free metrics - but I find myself having to do one extra step to get the peid (navigating to ose). It doesn't make much sense that the metric is available to me when I'm using the mozbar logged in as a pro member (which I pay for), but not apart of the API.
