Downsides of Squarespace v WooCommerce
-
Hello Mozzers! I'm thinking of using either Squarespace or WooCommerce for an ecommerce website. WooCommerce is great - I've used it before... how flexible is Squarespace from an SEO perspective, compared to WooCommerce? Thanks in advance, Luke
-
Many thanks for your response Dennis - you make a lot of sense - speed is so important and the SS sites I've browsed weren't doing particularly well on that side of things.

Wordpress based will always be more flexible. I havent used SS for a year though. I've seen all their recent changes and how they've taken the right steps to better SEO but I would still lean on Wordpress/Magento. If you have a few products, then you might want to try out SS. If you have experience with Wordpress in the past, then jump on to that but be sure you have a fast server. If you have a LOT of products, go with magento

Should I noindex WooCommerce subcategories?
What's the best practice these days for handling indexing of WooCommerce product subcategories? Example: in the sitemap we have:
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | btetrault
/product-category-a/
/product-category-a/subcategory-1/
/product-category-a/subcategory-2/
etc. Should the /subcategory-*/ be noindexed, canonical to parent, or stay as indexed? Thanks!2 -
Pure Manual Spam v/s New website
My website nowwhatstudio.com hit by google pure spam and google applied manual spam action to the website. Why google applied manual spam action to my website? How Can I recover my website. I create new website (nowwhatmoments.com) with the same content from the old spam action website (nowwhatstudio.com). As google removed my old website content from search indexed. Can I use the same content for a new website? I already spend allot of money on content. If I delete my old website from the server, after that Can I use the old website content for a new website? Or Can make edits the old website content and make it 80% original for a new website? I can use my old website (nowwhatstudio) email id and social accounts for a new website?

Woocommerce SEO & Duplicate content?
Hi Moz fellows, I'm new to Woocommerce and couldn't find help on Google about certain SEO-related things. All my past projects were simple 5 pages websites + a blog, so I would just no-index categories, tags and archives to eliminate duplicate content errors. But with Woocommerce Product categories and tags, I've noticed that many e-Commerce websites with a high domain authority actually rank for certain keywords just by having their category/tags indexed. For example keyword 'hippie clothes' = etsy.com/category/hippie-clothes (fictional example) The problem is that if I have 100 products and 10 categories & tags on my site it creates THOUSANDS of duplicate content errors, but If I 'non index' categories and tags they will never rank well once my domain authority rises... Anyone has experience/comments about this? I use SEO by Yoast plugin. Your help is greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance. -Marc

Periodic DNS Switching for Major Website Updates - Any Downsides?
A company is performing some major updates to a website and the proposal to go live with the updates was explained as follows: Once the updates are done on the testing environment and the site is ready to go live, we switch the DNS to the testing environment and then this testing environment becomes the production site. And the old production site becomes the new testing environment. Are there any potential negatives to this? Is there a name for this technique? Of course, we've already considered : additional hosting cost potential performance differences- reinstalling and setting up server settings - SSL, etc.

Is there a downside of an image coming from the site's dotted quad and can it be seen as a duplicate?
Ok the question doesn't fully explain the issue. I just want some opinions on this. Here is the backstory. I have a client with a domain that has been around for a while and was doing well but with no backlinks. (Fairly low competition). For some reason they created mirrors of their site on different urls. Then their web designer built them a test site that was a copy of their site on the web designer's url and didn't bother to noindex it. Client's site dived, the web designer's site started ranking for their keywords. So we helped clean that up, and they hired a brand new web designer and redesigned the site. For some reason the dotted quad version of the site started showing up as a referer in GA. So one image on the site comes from that and not the site's url. So I ran a copyscape and site search and discovered the dotted quad version like 69.64.153.116 (not the actual address) was also being indexed by the search engine. To us this seems like a cut and dry duplicate content issue, but I'm having trouble finding much written on the subject. I raised the issue with the dev, and he reluctantly 301 the site to the official url. The second part of this is the web designer still has that one image on the site coming from the numerical version of the site and not the written url. Any thoughts if that has any negative SEO impact? My thought it isn't ideal, but it just looks like an external referral for pulling that one image. I'd love any thoughts or experience on a situation like this.

Any downsides of (permanent)redirecting 404 pages to more generic pages(category page)
Hi, We have a site which is somewhat like e-bay, they have several categories and advertisements posted by customers/ client. These advertisements disappear over time and turn into 404 pages. We have the option to redirect the user to the corresponding category page, but we're afraid of any negative impact of this change. Are there any downsides, and is this really the best option we have? Thanks in advance!

Moving from Shopp to WooCommerce...
My site is ranking well on most of my products and honestly, I don't do the best job in "on product page" SEO. I've got solid URLs for each, but my "on page" grades are mostly C, D and Fs. 😞 I honestly feel fortunate that I'm ranking well and have "put off" doing much work knowing that I was going to change from the Shopp wordpress plugin to Woocommerce. Is there anything structurally that will potentially hurt me from changing framework? Do I need to make sure that the URLs are the EXACT same for each of my products or will it be okay to make them better? Ex. some pages have a less desirable URL because I just "copied" the previous item. Thanks in advance for your experience.

Squarespace Errors
We have a website hosted by SquareSpace. We are happy with SS, but have done some crawl diagnostics and noticed several errors. These are primarily: Duplicate Page Title Duplicate Page Content Client Error (4xx) We dont really understand why these errors are taking place, and wonder if someone in the Seomoz forum has a firm understanding of SS who is able to assist us with this? rainforestcruises.com thanks.
