Does paying a reviewer for an impartial review violate Google's guidelines?
-
When a company pays for an impartial review from a website, should these links be no-followed? I am confident that paid positive reviews are seen as a manipulation of search, but is paying for an impartial review okay?
-
As part of the measure of impartiality, it'd be up to the reviewer to decide whether or not they link to your site with follow or nofollow. Also, in a video from Matt Cutts discussing paid links, he mentions as one measurement whether the payment would be surprising or not. As his example, he says it's not a surprise if you're a movie reviewer and they let you into the movie for free. Likewise, if the company providing a review is a firm of analysts and there's a minimum payment required in order to pay analysts for the hours involved in the review that wouldn't be surprising and is advertised up front. The last thing to consider, is the value in this review the link or being reviewed and having your company exposed to the people who read those reviews. As long as your are clear and transparent about everything, and state Blogger B received our Blue Widget to try for the weekend, you are in the clear.
I personally think a lot can be gained from the negative reviews as well. Sometimes you can leverage those negatives and use those as a platform for communication. If I visit a website, and I see a company who was humble enough to post a negative review, and then took the time to respond to the negative review, and started implementing their changes, I will be impressed.
If you can fix a problem for a customer, you will have a customer for life! At least in my opinion.

Yes I do, I mean a review where the writer can make up their own minds about the product. It sounds from both your answers that it is best to be careful in these circumstances and make sure that everything it up front.
Thank both for your help!

Good morning,
To my knowledge, the end result of the review doesn't really make a difference. The general rule of thumb I always try to follow is if any money/product/services were exchanged/traded then I have to have some sort of disclaimer stating that there was some sort of exchange made in return for the review.
I try to be as transparent as possible in my marketing/SEO tactics. At the end of the day, its going to come back and bite you in the long run.
Consumer Reports became famous because they refused to receive anything for free, and they were able to build trust with the consumer because of that.
EGOL, a active member on these boards, states over and over, that your content will speak for itself. If you are writing content that is worthy of the positive review, it will come on its own. You may need to help push people in the right direction, but I would agree with Houses, that same energy could be put into refining content, natural link building, creative marketing etc.
If shortcuts were easy or better, they would just be the way.

Hi,
Paid positive reviews are definitely not what they want to see but it's a bit less clear about paid impartial reviews as you aren't trying to influence what to write. I'd still steer clear though and find ways to encourage genuine reviews with the money saved. Given that you may end up paying for a bad or neutral review I don't see the point.

Ugh content! I don't get it
Everyone on this website says the proper way to build links is with great content. I don't get that because I am trying to build links for a classified ads website and there is no "great content" for any of the classified ads websites. None of them have blogs or any content other than the stuff people are selling. When I look at my competitors inbound links using open site explorer, they are all junk. Most of the links listed in open site explorer are dead /broken links and the ones that are not dead links are spammy, low quality links including many link exchanges. So, I don't get the "great content to build links" route because in my vertical it's not being done. Suggestions on how to build links in this situation?

Domain Authority and Page authority for external links. What's the difference in value?
Hi Guys. I understand the difference between page authority and domain authority in terms of how likely that page is to rank. But what about a links from a high DA site, but from a low PA page? We’ve identified a client with extremely high DA (73/100), but their blog page has a PA of 1/100. Would a link from this page be pretty much valueless due to the low PA? Or would it still be quite strong as the DA is so high? Perhaps you could point me to some good reading or Moz post on this topic? Thanks guys. Isaac.

Yandex vs. Google
I own an e-commerce website and my primary keyword ranks on page one of Yandex, but page 12 of Google. I have had some (likely less than optimal) links built to my website over the years. Considering Yandex doesn't take links into account, which is more likely? a. My high ranking on Yandex is indicative of where I COULD be ranking on Google if the unnatural links weren't being held against me. b. My page 12 ranking on Google is indicative that because links are still of value in Google, all of the sites above me have more and/or better quality of them. For example, A LOT more big name sites rank highly in Google as opposed to Yandex... presumably because they have a ton of good links that I (and other smaller sites) can't naturally get. Thoughts?

Use 301'd Domain for a new campaign
Hello everybody, My company is getting ready to start a new mediacampaign on a very specific subject. The mediacampaign is not directly targeted at our core business, the goal is more to inform our customers about a subject and do a little branding for our company. A nice (and expensive) infographic was built that is going to be the core content of the campaign. We want the infographic to get shared a lot and therefore some of my colleagues want the url to be as short as possible. The idea is to host the infographic on a url on our companysite, but use a 301'd, shorter domainname in our communications. We are going to be getting a lot of links to this empty 301'd domain which does nothing else then 301 to our companysite. I know that linkbuilding to a 301'd domain is an old blackhat tactic, that's the main reason I don't feel good about this. But i can't really find any info on this subject.

Google Penalty
Hello thereIt has just been confirmed that my site is suffering for a Google Penality. The odd thing is that it is just for my set of key keywords and not the whole site. It seems in 2010 that a rouge SEO company I used sent loads of spammy links but I have lots of other good links too. What is your advice moving forward? Will it drop over time? Do I set up a new site (this has been established over 10 years) or try and get better quality links to compensate for the spam ones? Thanks so much! Kindest regards Victoria

Angies List and Judy's Book and other sites
How much SEO weight do sites like Judy's Book or even Angie's List have. I do see the links in the linking reports but I am not sure if I should classify them as paid directories for inclusion. Also a second part of the question is do most of you still recommend the use of paid directories for link building? Yahoo Directory, BBB and so on?

Why Aren't Authority Links Showing in OSE?
Hi, we have created quality hubpage networks and squidoo lenses for the purpose of driving qualified traffic to our sites and generating authority backlinks. The backlinks from squidoo and hubpages are all dofollow, have been shared via social networks and are indexed in Google, why aren't any of them showing in OSE? Many thanks in advance, Lee
