High Bounce Rate
-
Hi Mozzers,
I wanted to discuss bounce rates as i am trying to drive my websites down and would appreciate some pointers.
Firstly, the facts.
Ours is an e-commerce website we attract 10000-12000 visitor a month, 8000 of which land on a single page and the other 4000 rest of website.
On a whole the rest of the website has a bounce rate of 48-56% which im fairly comfortable about, but have made small gains with little changes.
The problem is the single page attracting 8000 visitors. The page is an informative article about the various types of a select product and its most common uses. When i started the page had no internal links and was suffering from a 88% bounce rate. I have since inserted products into every sub-section of the post and lots of links to products, category pages etc. This has gone really well and the pages linked from it attracted 1000 more views month 1, and 1500 month 2 with the bounce rate dropping to 76% (small win). However I am still not happy as this is still very high. I would like to work towards dropping it below 60%.
The article attracts traffic from hundreds of longtail keywords around the subject "different types of this product". The average time spent on the page is 4-5 minutes so I know people are reading the article and finding it useful. How else can I look to encourage more click-through?
-
Why don't you sell those products? Is it because those other products are inferior in quality, too expensive for value, etc.? If there are specific reasons like that, it can some times be helpful to state that specifically as a means of helping to educate your customers and potentially sway them into seeing the value of what you do sell.
The other thing to look at is what keywords are driving traffic to the page. Granted, this data is hard to get but you can get a good sense of this in Search Console. Figure out why you are ranking for the things you don't sell. For example, if you have a lot of links pointing to you referring people your way referencing something you don't carry, see if there is a way to change those links to something more specific
Alternatively, if you are getting enough people coming to the site interested in products you don't carry but there isn't a great reason your company doesn't carry them, maybe see if there is a way you can carry the products (or resell them or something like that). I've worked with more than one client who didn't realize so many people may be interested in Product X until they saw the search traffic and that traffic helped them decide to change products offered.
-
I suspect part of the problem isn't that you are getting traffic, but the wrong sort of traffic. You want to sell products, but you might just be getting a causal searcher who gathers the information they want and then move on.
Have you looked into the key phrases you are targeting? You might also want to consider writing another information-rich page that can be linked from within the content but that is very targeted to the page your visitors are on.
There are a number of questions need answering about the page:
- Who are your ideal visitors?
- What are they arriving for?
- What can they do once they have the information they need?
Do look at Feeback Army (linked above) because for not very much money, you can get live users interacting with your page and answering questions you might have.

Some nice feedback there Matthew, Thank you. I certainly think this could be something i should look more into.
There a certain types of this product we dont cover in the article. Simply because we dont sell them. I know this could account for a number of the bounces simply because of the search terms users enter from this page.
How would you reduce the bounce rate for the attracted traffic and expectation of those products you dont sell?
-
The page in question is
http://www.atp-instrumentation.co.uk/different-types-of-thermometer/
Allow me to add some more context.
The site is going under a content review, as I found many page of thin or poor content when i began. This page will also be updated in-line with new categories and better content that is being injected into those new pages.
When i began in March / April the page wasn't great, but attracted so many visitors I was reluctant to alter it too much. I added the product images, and links into the already existing sub-sections.
The content can be improved upon, but as the average person spend 4-5 minutes reading im fairly sure the content is ok for now.
-
Without looking at the site or this one page, but based on what you are describing, I would suspect the bounce rate is high because of an expectation gap. The people coming to this article sound like they are in the early stages of the buying cycle--they want information about the types of products available and how to use this product. Maybe many of these people aren't quite ready to look at category pages or product pages because it is simply too early in the buying cycle for that to happen. Your links expect one thing (products/shop/buy) but visitors expect another (more info).
In these cases to lower the bounce rate, you need some kind of in-between content. Something that moves people to the next step of the buying cycle. Basically, you need to solve for X in this equation: early pre-purchase research -> X -> product page. To start solving for X, I want to know what questions people have after reading this article. There are several ways to get that, but user testing with targeted customers can usually be a good place to start.
Another place to look is in regards to trust factors. Do the people coming to that informational article trust your brand? It seems like they are because of how long they spend on the page. However, it could be people trust the company enough for information and insight, but maybe not enough to purchase. Again, user testing this page to gauge trust factors could be helpful to clarify what more you can do here to get people to stick around.
Final thought - it may simply be that this page will always have a high bounce rate. This is where re-targeting ads can be helpful. You know people are interested in your proudct but aren't quite ready to look at products just yet. So, after they visit this page you should re-target an ad to them as they continue their research building up to purchasing the product.

Hi there
What I would do is focus on writing content that serves the users search intent. From there, focus on the logical next step that provides a useful and engaging experience for the user. Always think top down for your audience.
- What is the user's intent with their search?
- Does my business goals align with the audience goals?
- What do I need to make sure that intent is met on my site?
- What title tags need to be in place?
- What does my meta description need to say to increase CTR?
- What internal links do I need that are logical in my content if the user is interested?
- What calls to action do I need to ensure the user either a. keeps moving through the site or b. converts if that's the ultimate goal?
- How do I distribute this content in a way that my target audience finds it?
What I suggest doing is going through these questions step by step and find potential pain points. You can even try user testing to get an idea of how users are using your site; this can also be done using Hotjar, both from a recording and survey standpoint. You could even try interviewing your customers to see if the site is providing the information they need, or if they know what the next step is.
There are a ton of opportunities and resources to help you find out how to keep users on and moving through your site. I would focus on all of the questions and resources above. Then, sit down with your team and discuss priority areas.
Hope this helps! Good luck!

I think you are on the right track of including links to the products. Maybe try to refine that similar to what Amazon does, "People who view this also view ______".
I also wonder if you have multiple long tail queries, any chance/thought into creating more pages to make them more specific to what the searcher is interested in? Meaning if they are looking for product X, and this one page is talking about products A-Z, it may be too much non-relevant content for them so they bounce out. This could explain the time on page being high and the bounce rate as well. Just a thought without knowing what the page looks like.
-
Hello! Do you have a few strategically placed, non-spammy calls to action?
-
Can you give a link to the page please?
-
Have you had a look at what others in your market are doing? You could always look at using CrazyEgg to do some in-page analysis and see how users are browsing the page. It helps to know how far someone is getting down the page and by using the heatmap, you can see where clicks are happening. Find active areas and set a call-to-action around there.
A little live user analysis might also prove useful by understanding what people may / may not like about what is in place. Feedback Army is great for this.
Enticing internal links can also help with funnelling traffic.

Please share best high quality low cost animation and video production services for less
Hi, Here's what I'm doing: I've got Creative Suite and I'm putting together animations and videos for several websites, finding clips and images and forming what we need. What I need: A video production service to put everything together with their fine 10X or near "touch" without charging me too much since I did all the legwork. I'm asking for a miracle here, I'm asking for almost 10X animation, but where I do the legwork and it doesn't cost very much. Real low budget here, but we're not willing to put out anything low par. Please share any services or advice you know of. Thank you.

Does adding more outgoing links on a high PA page decrease the juice passed to previous links?
Hi, I'm not sure how PA DA exactly works when the goal is to create backlinks to your site in order to have the most impact on passing PA DA juice (if there is such a thing) to ones money site. For example let's say you have a blog and the PA is 40 DA is 30. Let's say I create a backlink pointing to my site on the homepage of this blog, in which I desire better rankings for, and the links I created are only 1-3 outgoing links on this post which is again on the homepage. Then say in a months time, I want to add another post on the homepage (so the 40 PA and 30 DA stays the same) creating a backlink to one of my other money sites. Does adding this second round of backlinks result in sending less juice to the first? This is what I want to know. Thank you!

High Quality Domains and what to do with them
Hi, I rus a travel photography business. The primary function of the website is to sell prints, though I blog about my travels on the same domain name as well as a few pieces of content that are helpful to users interested in some of the places I travel to. I do okay with it, but obviously, I am always looking for a way to increase visibility and sales of prints. I own a couple of high quality keyword domain names, that I've been trying to figure out what to do with. One of which is for a city that my prints of my photography are probably best known for. The domains I'm really trying to decide what to do with are basically a www.citystatephotography.com and www.citystatephotos.com, where the city and state are the ones I'm targeting. The question is, what do I do with it? I've seen various ideas from other photographers that have various levels of success. Here are the options I'm considering: Just redirect it to the photo gallery of photos that I'm trying to rank highly for. From what I read on various blogs, this doesn't really do much of anything, but maybe I've read wrong? Create a website or microsite with some quality content related to the city that also links back to my photography website on various places and possibly once in the navigation. I do have quality content I could put up that would be helpful to people from the city besides just trying to get sales. But there's always a chance this will cannibalize my original domain without helping sales, I assume? Spam my photo galleries across two domains. Most of my photography galleries would stay on my main domain that I already run, but the photo galleries that are key to that city would be hosted on that citystatephotography.com domain name. I've seen a photographer from Colorado do quite well with this method. (www.imagesofrmnp.com and www.morninglight.us) He's heavily known for his images of Rocky Mountain National Park and that seems to be his main brand, but all of his non-RMNP travel photography goes on the other site. The two sites look almost identical, though they link back and forth fairly extensively. There doesn't seem to be much in the way of duplicate content either. I've considered this method, but I'm nervous I'll kill what I've already built up if this were to fail. Do nothing with the domains. Seems wasteful, as these domains, particularly the citystatephotography.com domain seems useful in some way. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance!

Domain Migration of high traffic site:
We plan to perform a domain migration in 6 months time.
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | lcourse
I read the different articles on moz relating to domain migration, but some doubts remain: Moving some linkworthy content upfront to new domain was generally recommended. I have such content (free e-learning) that I could move already now to new domain.
Should I move it now or just 2 months before migration?
Should I be concerned whether this content and early links could indicate to google a different topical theme of the new domain ? E.g. in our case free elearning app vs a commercial booking of presential courses of my core site which is somehow but not extremely strongly related) and links for elearning app may be very specific from appstores and from sites about mobile apps. we still have some annoying .php3 file extensions in many of our highest traffic pages and I would like to drop the file-extension (no further URL change). It was generally recommended to minimize other changes at the same time of domain migration, but on the other hand implementing later another 301 again may also not be optimum and it would save time to do it all at the same time. Shall I do the removal of the file extension at the same time of the domain migration or rather schedule it for 3 months later? On the same topic, would the domain migration be a good occasion to move to https instead of http at the same time, or also should we rather do this at a different time? Any thoughts or suggestions?0 -
Does Having A High PPC Bounce Rate Affect Organic SERPs?
Hi Mozzers. My website uses a landing page for Google Adwords traffic targeting keywords like HR Software, HR Systems etc. The design of the landing page is similar to our website but a key difference is that, being a landing page, we've removed the navigation (it is still possible to navigate to the main website by clicking on the logo). We've A/B tested this and found that by removing the navigation we get more people converting/signing up for the free trial of our service. We track conversions using Google Analytics. Depending on the keyword the conversion rate is between 2.5% and 5%. However, because we've removed the navigation the bounce rate is really high, circa 80% for our landing page compared to an average for our website of approx 40%. Would having such a high bounce rate harm our organic rankings for the rest of the website? Thanks

Question about putting high traffic keywords in my Primary navigation menu.
Hello, I seem to be having a bit of a dilemma with making a crucial site architecture decision about which high traffic keyword I should put in my primary navigation menu. I am the owner of a computer repair business that I am currently re branding out of necessity for a few reasons. My existing business website has been established for the past 5 years now and I do all of the SEO and have been on the 1st Page of GOOGLE for anything computer repair related since day 1 however, like I said am re branding my company and migrating from Joomla to WordPress so it is a great time to make some positive and effective changes to my site architecture. I am going to be using the Silo Site Architecture on the new Site and I have a very firm working knowledge on the process but I seem to have hit a snag or dilemma with one of my Primary Navigation Categories for the Silo Theme. My specif question is this please.. Doing keyword research the Keyword Phrase "Computer Repair" is the most highly searched for keyword phrase for people that have computer related problems (naturally) and Ideally "Computer Repair" should be one of my Main Menu Navigation Silo Category Themes. But... here lies the problem.... If I go with "Computer Repair" in the (Main Nav Menu) then although it gets - 823,000 Local Monthly Searches I would be opening myself up to a potential problem because normally, most people associate the Phrase Computer Repair with Desktop Computer Repair. So in essence I would be forced to use an alternate other than "Computer Repair" for the Desktop Computer Repair structure in the Silo Theme (Sidebar Nav Menu). The Keyword Phrase "Desktop Repair" gets only - 12,100 Local Monthly Searches so basically no one uses the Search Phrase "Desktop Repair. when they are looking to get their computer repaired. I hope that I did not just confuse you? Still confused? Continue reading and I will dissect my psycho babble for you..... "The Semantic Historical Logic" Historically, a Desktop has always been referred to as a computer. Hence the reason why even still today, when our "Desktop" has problems and we need to get it fixed, we Search for "Computer Repair". Why is that? That's a very good question and here is "exactly" why. Long before we had Laptops, Netbooks, Tablets and Smart Phones we had the all encompassing and mighty "Computer" that allowed us to connect to the rest of the world. It was not until Laptops actually came about where there was a need to assign an actual _"Classification System"_and all mighty and powerful "Computer" became a "Desktop Computer**"!!! ** So, there you have it. This is the reason why "Computer Repair" is synonymous with "Desktop Repair" and why "NO ONE" searches for desktop repair when their Desktop Computer is broken! ============================================================= ACTUAL EXAMPLES WITH SCREEN SHOTS BELOW! If I go with Example A: I have the the Highest Traffic Keyword Phrase in my Mast Head (Main Nav Menu) but would be forced to use Desktop Repair to classify (Desktop Repair) in (Sidebar Nav Menu) instead using the keyword phrase "Computer Repair" to classify Desktop Repair. Example A: Main Nav Theme Category = "Computer Repair" = 823,000 Monthly Loc Child Pages/ Categories = -Desktop Repair = **12,100 ** Monthly Loc -Laptop Repair = 165,000 Monthly Loc -Tablet Repair = 165,000 Monthly Loc -Remote Desktop = 1,000,000 Monthly Loc I am using WordPress - (Pages / Child Pages) not Categories & Posts! So, as you can see from (Example A:) above, not being able to use the keyword phrase "Computer Repair" to classify the "Desktop Repair" section kind of opens me up for failure to a good extent as most of my business is done on regular desktop computers which people generally think "Computer Repair" when they are searching to have their Desktop Repaired. ============================================================= Example B: Main Nav Theme Category = **"Computer Service" = **246,000 Monthly Loc Child Pages/ Categories = -Computer Repair = 823,000 Monthly Loc -Laptop Repair = 165,000 Monthly Loc -Tablet Repair = 165,000 Monthly Loc -Remote Desktop = 1,000,000 Monthly Loc I am using WordPress - (Pages / Child Pages) not Categories & Posts! Now, with (Example B:) even though the keyword Phrase "Computer Service" is not the more favorable item to have as the Silo Theme Category in the Main Navigation Menu, we can see that it is much more favorable in terms of Local Monthly Searches over the just about non searched for phrase "Desktop Repair" So as you see, I have a bit of a dilemma that a more experienced SEO could counsel me on. The question is, through your experience, which scenario would you see as more favorable for the site Architecture example A: or example B: This brings me to my next question that also creates some confusion for me. If you say I think (Example B:) would be my better bet what would you recommend that I do with the URL Structure if "Computer Service" is the Parent Page for the Silo Theme? Example: I am using the /%category%/%postname%/ permalink structure for the Silo Site Architecture for the (Blog Section) only - and am using WP Pages and Child Pages for my Silo Content for my Services (Not Posts). Would this URL be a problem in Googles eyes or a customers eyes and be perceived as SPAMMY ... http://www.pcmedicsoncall.com/computer-services/computer-repair/ More than likely, I would say yes because it looks that way to me! My question to you in regards to the link structure above is, If I take the "Computer Service" page and change the "SLUG" to (services) yes it will look better but... will that effectively work against me??? EDIT: ^^ Answered my own question on the Services deal directly above. ^^ Thank you for reading my very long winded questions but I am pretty detailed and I think that the better that I explained it the less writing and guessing what I meant would be better for all concerned (typing wise) Thank you very much and I look forward to your insightful expertise and wisdom.
