High charts, anyone used them? SEO impact/things to take into consideration
-
Hi there Moz Community,
Our org is looking into implementing Highcharts, interactive charts on our website instead of having regular static chart images. I found this post recently about how Moz implemented them a while back, a couple years ago.
https://moz.com/community/q/question-for-moz-developers-highcharts
Moz made a pretty good case for them over alternatives. They would certainly keep people on the page longer, which is good, but is there anything else that I should take into account or think of before going ahead with this from an SEO perspective? Does anyone else have experience with them on their websites?
Thanks

Looking at what's cached and appearing in search snippets, it seems like Google is crawling at least some of the text in my HighCharts on MozCast.com. Those charts aren't text heavy, so it's hard to tell how they weight it or if that text is eligible for ranking, but I strong suspect that Google is at least aware of HighCharts and can parse some of the data.

Hi There Jon and Dr. Pete,
Thanks for the answers. Much appreciated.
The only issue I was envisioning was Google's indexing of the highcharts. I imagined that since they are JS based, Google wouldn't be able to read and index them the way they are able to now with our regular image charts, but we are prepared to sacrifice that for a better UX with the interactive high charts. Luckily, as you touched on Pete, we have some accompanying text with each chart, so they won't be just pages with charts and little other content.
It is good that load times are ok, I hadn't actually thought about that. Our site speed is fairly fast, so most likely introducing HighCharts won't be a big issue even if they were to slow things down a bit.
Thanks for answers!

Yeah, the main MozCast graphs use them, and those are public. Google seems to index the pages fine and even is parsing a lot of the text content on the graph itself, best I can tell. I haven't seen any SEO issues at this point.
I think I'd be wary of putting any really critical content (to search) entirely in a HighChart. You might want to break it out. If a page is nothing but a chart, it's kind of like a page that's nothing but a video embed. It still has value, potentially, but if you had a lot of them it could start to look thin and bots might not see all of that rich content.
That said, the HighChart is a pretty heavy element of the MozCast home-page, and it seems to rank fine. I'd really just start to worry if you had 100s of pages that were each a different chart but had very little supporting content.
The other issues are technical. Load-times are good with HighCharts, but mobile rendering can vary a bit. It's decent, but there are variations. If you have a big mobile audience, I'd definitely make sure things look the way you think and are accessible. If you had a very low tech-savvy audience that had JS turned off, obviously that's a consideration, too. I think that's rarely a fear these days, though.

Hello! We use highcharts extensively in most of our apps and are pretty happy. Our UI devs have built some very slick looking visualizations using it. My personal favorite is attached.
Since all of our in-app charts are only available to logged-in users we don't have to consider SEO implications. However Mozcast does (http://mozcast.com/), so Dr. Pete might have some insight. I will ask him to respond here!

Few question about SEO
HI guys, I have few questions and I always find good answer here. I tried many SEO companies some very expensive and well known some with medium prices and some from India. I’m not an SEO expert but I always get the same things from SEO companies. They're saying you have to stay with us for few months before you’ll see any results. I completely understand however I don’t see the result on the end.1. What exactly Do I need SEO company for, after I do on page optimisation if they don’t work on proper backlinks. Just letting you know I’m getting content from other people.2. Is there something else which is really important after your page is optimised than backlinks? Or we should fully focus on get backlinks from customers, guest post, sharing on social media etc. to increase our DA and PA?3. Any advice about some individual or company who is good in backlink services?

Domain name suffix impact on SEO
Hello there, We are about to launch a new website and were wondering what impact a specific suffix would have from an SEO point of view. We were thinking about going for a domain which ends in .london as oppose to .com We are based in London and sell world wide via our website. We are suggesting www.domain.london as oppose to www.domain.com I would appreciate your views... Thanks

SEO Checklist for eCommerce?
Over the past week or so, my eCommerce site has experienced a large drop in organic traffic from Google.I have used analytics to determine that the pages that have seen the biggest losses in traffic are product pages. I know there are so many seo checklists/site audit checklists out there recommending different things, but does anyone have a good checklist (or link to a good checklist) that would fit our situation best? Thank you!

Website/SEO Audit Needed
We've been outsourcing our link building to India for the past 3 years and the results were pretty good up until beginning of this year. What they were essentially doing is putting links into directories, a few per month, and posting a few articles per month. Out of our top 10 keywords, 8 got into top 10. Then something happened around Jan 1 last year, our ranking started dropping, falling out of the top 50, before settling around 20-30ish. We disavowed most of the low quality links since then. Also, very odd, all the top ranking competitors all fell (including me) and were replaced by less "specialized" companies who sold a broad range of products (for example: all parts of the car, rather than someone who just focused on mufflers). Theres also other differences but again I can't put a finger on it. I'd like to find someone who can do a detailed audit of our site, and our competitors, what happened to cause the drop, and why the new top positions sites are ranked high. And I really don't have time to do an audit myself. Our site is American Hospitality Furniture dot com. Any feed back would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

SEO Migration / Transition from Current Platform. Have Experience?
We're currently about to make the switch from one commerce platform to another (volusion to magento,) and wondering if anyone here, at all, has any experience with having a site for a few years and then switching platforms. How did the engines react? What did you do? Time frame for things that happened, etc...would love some feedback and input on your story if you've migrated platforms. Thanks

How to create SEO budget?
If I see the site which has 8,000 links from unique domains (RDD in Market Samurai). How much could it cost to build such amount of links? How long does it take? What SEO budget will be based on these data?

Multiple stores & domains vs. One unified store (SEO pros / cons for E-Commerce)
Our company runs a number of individual online shops, specialised in particular products but all in the same genre of goods overall, with a specific and relevant domain name for each shop. At the moment the sites are separate, and not interlinked, i.e. Completely separate brands. An analogy could be something like clothing accessories (we are not in the clothing business): scarves.com, and silkties.com (our field is more niche than this) We are about to launch a related site, (e.g. handbags.com), in the same field again but without precisely overlapping products. We will produce this site on a newer, more flexible e-commerce platform, so now is a good time to consider whether we want to place all our sites together with one e-commerce system on the backend. Essentially, we need to know what the pros and cons would be of the various options facing us and how the SEO ranking is affected by the three possibilities. Option 1: continue with separate sites each with its own domains. Option 2: have multiple sites, each on their own domain, but on the same ecommerce system and visible linked together for the customer (with unified checkout) – on the top of each site could be a menu bar linking to each site: [Scarves.com] – [SilkTies.com] – [Handbags.com] The main question here is whether the multiple domains are mutually beneficial, particularly considerding how close to target keywords the individual domains are. If mutually benefitial, how does it compare to option 3: Option 3: Having recently acquired a domain name (e.g. accessories.com) which would cover the whole category together, we are presented with a third option: making one site selling all of these products in different categories. Our main concern here would be losing the ability to specifically target marketing, and losing the benefit of the domains with the key words in for what people are more likely to be searching for (e.g. 'silk tie') rather than 'accessories.' Is it worth taking the hit on losing these specific targeted domain names for the advantage of increased combined inbound links?
