One website with multiple advertising domains?
-
Working on a website for a business with distinct lines of business, one is more B2C and one is B2B yet the type of service is related. To think of an example, let's say it's for a photographer who does weddings, but also does real estate photography. He wants to make sure he can market to each audience separately so when they go to his homepage the homepage content is oriented for the services that audience is looking for.
If you use two separate websites, they have to be totally unique to avoid dupe content flags, and you also end up diluting each website's domain authority since you are spreading your inbound links between two different websites. However would this be the optimum strategy then?
One website hosted on: bozophotography.com
A second domain: bozoweddings.com that has a 301 redirect to the wedding section home page on bozophotography.com
A third domain: bozorealestatephotos.com that has a 301 redirect to the real estate section home page.
So on certain advertising, business cards, etc, the business could choose which domain they want to publicize to insure the audience sees a home page related to that line of business.
I suppose you could publicize it as a subdomain like: realestate.bozophotography.com or as a slash address: bozophotography.com/weddings but those seem much less professional, visually, than just having bozoweddings.com.
There is rumor you don't quite get 100% of the link juice, but the main domain would be used the majority of the time so I really see no downside?

The domains in question are brand new and have no website associated with them. As I described, they are just being used for advertising to certain audiences.
Essentially instead of using subdomains (department.domain.com) or sub folders domain.com/department, I want to use domaindepartment.com so I can print domaindepartment.com on business cards and those recipients when they go to domaindepartment.com they will be redirect to the department section of domain.com

If the domain being moved has pages with good content that are ranking, the content of those pages should be moved to the new domain. That will help preserve traffic that comes into those pages. Get these pages ready, but don't publish they until you are ready to make the switch.
The hosting for the domain being moved should be kept permanently. You can reduce the plan to low traffic levels but it needs to be there with your redirects. If you abandon it then any traffic that clicks through links will not be redirected and the value of links pointing to the domain will be lost.
If there are links on other sites that you can have edited to their new destination, contact those webmasters after the redirect has been made.
Starting soon, before the switch. Place notices that click to short announcements on the domain being moved telling customers about the switch. That will hold current customers and not surprise them when the switch occurs.
After the switch, the links to the domain that was moved will now point to the combined domain. If these sites have different link sources then they will be combined in the new domain. If the domain being moved had lots of different links that the domain being moved to that will give maximum benefit. If they duplicate one another's links then the benefit will be very small.
You can notify google of the redirect in your search console.
There are many fine points of redirecting that might not be covered above. If you have not done this before it would be wise to have an experience SEO help you plan and execute the move. That way all of the things that you do will be checked and they will watch to be sure that nothing is missed. I am not saying this because I am looking for work. I don't do work for others. I only work on my own sites. I am saying this because its a smart thing to do if you don't have a bit of experience with moving domains.

So The strategy being considered at this point is to have the domain name used for advertising one of the service types to do a 301 redirect to the subsection home page of that service on the main website.
I'm curious what Google will do when it sees this domain in links on Yelp, etc and sees there are no pages for this website and it only redirects to this other domain? I assume Google won't index it, which is fine, but could it somehow have a negative effect on the main website, other than maybe losing 10% of the 'link juice' for backlinks using the alternate domain name? Or should we put a robots.txt on the domain's website (that isn't redirected) with a noindex directive to be safe? Or could that trigger some sort of red flag with Google Places for business that we are using a domain for advertising that is redirected and not indexed?

Everything that I believe about SEO tells me that a big and diverse photography site will perform better than two little photography sites. So I would offer multiple photography services on the same domain.
I don't think that a person who shoots photos at weddings is going to be a total bozo about shooting photos of houses or offices. Great photographers are great photographers and their body of knowledge is versatile and transferable to different subjects.
Also, I think that a person who lands on a website about photography and is given choices for weddings, real estate, product, and other types of photography is going to think that they should leave right away. They might find respect in the individual or the team that offers these many services.
I think that for every customer that you lose because he thinks that you can't do more than one type of photography, you will gain a customer who gets wedding photos done and then comes back for more good work related to real estate. Lots of people who are getting married are also going to be in the process of selling a home. They hopefully will not be hiring you for another wedding any time soon. Repeat customers are easier sells than a potential customer who knows nothing about you.

Can one back-link fluctuates ranking of website with thousands of back-links?
It happend to our website. We have seen major ranking fluctuations for our website because of one back-link. What kind of links those can be? Why Google is not stopping them even though they claim that such back-links will be taken care of?

Two websites vs. one for SEO
I recently met with a new potential client who currently has two websites for his business - one that is for the business as a whole and another that is specific to one of his particular services (his main service and what the overall business is known for). My first question was "why do you have two websites?" His response was that he has had a really hard time ranking well organically for his main service. He worked with an SEO company for two years and never was able to establish a solid organic presence for searches related to his main service - so he went ahead and had a site built to focus specifically on that service with the hope that it would help him rank organically for searches related to that service. The new site was built very recently (Dec. 2014) and it hasn't had a lot of optimization work put into it. The original site has a much higher Domain Authority, more incoming links, etc. My typical preference has always been to use one website and drive all traffic to that site, while building out specific content for any products/services on individual pages of the site. For some reason I'm torn as to what to do with this particular situation since his main concern is ranking for his core service, which hasn't happened with the original site. I'm concerned, though, that optimizing and managing two websites will be less effective than driving all of the traffic to one site, and that it could actually be detrimental overall. What are your thoughts? Suggestions? Feel free to let me know if you need any more details.

We're currently not using schemas on our website. How important is it? And are websites across the globe using it?
Schemas looks like an important thing when it comes to structuring your website and ensuring the crawl bots get all the details. I've been reading a lot of articles around the web and most of them are saying that schemas are important but very few websites are using it. Why so? Are the schemas on schema.org there to stay or am I wasting my time?

How to structure articles on a website.
Hi All, Key to a successful website is quality content - so the Gods of Google tell me. Embrace your audience with quality feature rich articles on your products or services, hints and tips, how to, etc. So you build your article page with all the correct criteria; Long Tail Keyword or phrases hitting the URL, heading, 1st sentance, etc. My question is this
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | Mark_Ch
Let's say you have 30 articles, where would you place the 30 articles for SEO purposes and user experiences. My thought are:
1] on the home page create a column with a clear heading "Useful articles" and populate the column with links to all 30 articles.
or
2] throughout your website create link references to the articles as part of natural information flow.
or
3] Create a banner or impact logo on the all pages to entice your audience to click and land on dedicated "articles page" Thanks Mark0 -
Multiple domain level redirects to unique sub-folder on one domain...
Hi, I have a restaurant menu directory listing website (for example www.menus.com). Restaurant can have there menu listed on this site along with other details such as opening hours, photos ect. An example of a restaurant url might be www.menus.com/london/bobs-pizza. A feature i would like to offer is the ability for Bob's pizza to use the menus.com website listing as his own website (let assume he has no website currently). I would like to purchase www.bobspizza.com and 301 redirect to www.menus.com/london/bobs-pizza Why?
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | blackrails
So bob can then list bobspizza.com on his advertising material (business cards etc, rather than www.menus.com/london/bobs-pizza). I was considering using a 301 redirect for this though have been told that too many domain level redirects to one single domain can be flagged as spam by Google. Is there any other way to achieve this outcome without being penalised? Rel canonical url, url masking? Other things to note: It is fine if www.bobspizza.com is NOT listed in search results. I would ideally like any link juice pointing to www.bobspizza.com to pass onto www.menus.com though this is a nice to have. If it comes at the cost of being penalised i can live without the link juice from this. Thanks0 -
Website Consolidation To Sub Domains or Leave Stand Alone
For a real estate SEO client they have their corporate site and then for each of their communities (10 of them) each community has their own website domains. One of their team members met with another search agency who recommended they move (consolidate) all their community domains under the corporate site as a sub domain. For example let's say their main site was www.maincompany.com and one of their communities was www.localcompany.com the other firm recommended they move that existing site to become localcompany.maincompany.com and for the other 9 communities to do the exact same thing. They shared that it would really help the corporate site and each of the communities improve search rankings. I am struggling to see how this could be possible and was hoping to get some perspective as the client has asked me to come in and give my opinion if they should proceed with this consolidation. Google has indexed each of their community sites and each site gets a decent amount of search traffic and rankings. Due to that I can't see any benefit to doing this. Since each sub domain would be considered a different site than it essentially is what they already have today so it does not raise domain authority for the main company site. Since, each community has a very different brand there would be little reason to go the main company site. What I mean by that is if a user went to localcompany.maincompany.com site I thought that some may (at least out of curiosity) remove the sub-domain to see the maincompany.com site. The look and feel of each are so different it would potentially cause user confusion too. So my thoughts are this would be a negative for both the search engines and user. So I can share factual pros/cons with clients, do you have any thoughts to the pro's / con's of this approach to consolidate/move other existing sites under a sub domain of the main corporate site?

Affects of vanity domains?
Hi there! My client's domain name is his name, let's say (www,myname.com) because he is well-known in his industry. He is a physician with a very specific specialty and organic competition is fierce for the most relevant keyword to his specialty. A domain has just become available that includes the keyword. If we bought the domain, how could we use it to our advantage? I'm confused about redirecting, etc., with this type of situation. Am i making any sense here? Help! Thanks. 🙂

Purchased a high ranking domain and want to transfer my site to the new domain
I recently purchased a highly ranked domain. The link profile is very good and I don't want to lose to many links however I want to transfer my site to that domain. What is the best way of doing this without losing the current rank on search engines? Also how much does the transfer of registrar information impact my SEO?
