Dividing a website into two websites
-
I have a website which talks about Yoga and GMAT classes (2,000 pages). It has blog posts, Faqs, discussions, videos etc.I am planning to fork GMAT content (1,000) pages into a niche website to rank better.
-
Is this a good idea or bad idea?
-
Will Google think niche new Yoga site as duplicate content was there on Dance site in the beginning.
-
I am doing this with assumption that niche website will have higher authority so that I can beat the competitors. What is the best approach to beat your competitors?
-
I am primarily concerned of what happens if I fork half of the website into a new one. Will Google treat new website as a duplicate content website because, this content WAS present in old website and Google will have archives of that. Please help

I completely agree with Clayton's response so I won't touch on that.
To answer your other question though of whether or not Google will see the second site as being duplicate, the short answer is that "it shouldn't".
Google will only reference the last-crawled copy of your website so the only time there could be potential for being seen as duplicate is if the new domain gets crawled before the old one is recrawled. Even then, I wouldn't expect it would have a measurable difference on the progress of a new domain.
Don't forget, you can't get penalized for duplicate content. The worst that can happen is your rankings slide somewhat but being a new domain, it'd take a few weeks/months to see any real rankings anyway so it's mostly a moot point

Generally a bad idea.
If the two websites are totally different then do it. If they can feed off each other - then one website. It is the equivalent of having two houses... two sets of rates, two sets of bills, and two gardens to clean up. One house is easier, but sometimes it is best to have another to put the inlaws in another house away from you.... it is your call, but if there is anyway you can put up with your inlaws then one site is teh way to go..

Best website IA/structure for SEO?
What's the current thinking on the best structure of information on a website for SEO? Structure for visitors can be best achieved through navigation menus, but I am more interested in how I should organise my URL structure so Google can make sense of the depth of my site topics. The website is an Asian travel blog so there are essentially two specific types of post on the site. One type is location specific (may be about an attraction, a city, a region or a country). The other type is general (usually about an aspect of travel like travel cash, visas, scams, etc). At the moment, all my general posts are organised like www.asiantraveltips.com/blog/[post-name]. My location-specific posts are organised like www.asiantraveltips.com/[country]/[region-or-city]/[place-name]/ so that Google can see I have depth of topics about each country and region. But I find it hard to keep consistency in this arrangement of URLs and I don't know if I might be better off to just have everything flat and tagged as a blog post like www.asiantraveltips.com/blog/[country]-[region-city]-[post-name]/? What's best practice these days? How are others organising travel blog websites?

Internal Linking From Blog to Website
Hi all, I'm just seeking opinions on something an external company have told us about linking from our blog to our website... Our website is; www.XYZ.com and our blog is www.XYZ.com/blog I add content to the blog on an almost daily basis and generally link on average 3 times from the blog (internally) to a various relevant pages on our website. Today I was told that by doing this I am 'diluting' the link juice which I understand but don't agree with... All I am doing is a form of internal linking which as far as I am aware is a good on-page technique? Just curious to learn other people's view on this... Many thanks Andy

Duplicate Content on our own website
Our website sells tickets for events. We also have an news articles section with information about events / artists / venues. From time to time we release a product page and a related news article on a separate page. Some of the content in the news article would be perfect for our product page. Essentially its our product page we want too rank. Would it harm our SEO if we had some of the same content on both of these pages?

800 number on website
Hi, My client just sent me an 800 number that he would like to use to replace his number on the website. I know that it is best to keep a local phone number on the website and across all citations for NAP/Local SEO reasons. Is there anywhere that I could still incorporate the 800 number and not have it affect SEO? Thanks, Erin
