What are the most underrated SEO tactics?
-
Looking over the discussion of underrated SEO tactics at http://sphinn.com/story/178993/ , I'm curious if folks here have any favorite SEO tactics that they feel are ignored, underrated, or somehow not appreciated by the community at large. Any thoughts?
Among the tactics listed in the Sphinn post:
- Blog commenting
- Analytics to identify low-hanging keyword fruit
- Getting your site set up properly at the server level
- Unique and relevant imagery
- Internal links
- Google Place page optimization
- Several more...
Any others that should be included? I'd personally add segmenting your keyword traffic into trademark (those that mention your brand name) versus non-trademark segments for more thorough analysis.

I have to add my vote for one I saw on that post - image optimization / alt tags. I've noticed an improvement in rankings by optimizing alt tags, plus they sometimes show up as part of the SERP snippet (when keywords are in the query) which means they have CTR implications as well.
-
UPDATE: Here's a follow-up discussion from Sphinn about the most overrated SEO tactics.
Examples include:
- XML Sitemaps
- Standards-compliance
- Keyword density
- Toolbar PageRank
- Many others...
Enjoy!

I believe I remember Rand answering this question with 'badges' as the response.

I dont know about other countries, but here in the UK there are a deplorable number of so-called "SEO companies" who seem to ignore the importance of well written content and instead try to fool people into thinking that a few site changes is all thats needed, and in turn, build the content for the search engines thereby slowly killing their customers website.
This I find falls into the "ignored" category.

Andy

WordPress Themes and SEO
I am helping out a client with updating their website.
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | cangelmarketer
The theme they currently have hasn't been updated in ages (I am going to guess years). Would there be a difference in updating to the most recent version of their theme and changing them to a completely different theme? Or because they update in the current theme is so large anyway, it won't make a difference in terms of SEO. The reason I ask is that they don't know their Themeforest details to log in and download the most recent version of the theme, so they would have to re-purchase it, and with the hosting, they have access to a range of themes includes in their package. SEO views on having other videos on our YouTube Channel
Our company is an eCommerce site for aftermarket automotive accessories. We recently started making videos for our customers and hosting them on YouTube channel. With our limited resources, we're unable to produce a video for all our products (videos on benefits and features, installation, new product introductory, reviews, etc.), How does it look if we have other peoples videos on our channel? Will our SEO be affected? Would we be flagged by YouTube?

Help with homepage SEO please
Hi I have been looking after this site www.kids-academy.co.uk for 3 weeks now. I spotted that links were a major problem with the site and started to strip out the black hat inbound links straight away. I have also been doing some onsite optimisation for the main areas I have been asked to focus on. This saw results within a week for the subpages which is great. however, the design of the site meant there were no landing pages for the categories and the menu is a permanent "fixture" called a megamenu. I have advised /landingpages were needed not only for the ease of the end user to find what they need but also for SEO. Now the issues I have are that due to the menu style, it sees every one of those links within the homepage - over 200 links! I am wondering if I should nofollow some of them, or get them to change the style of the menu as surely this is having a direct result on the homepage and landing pages just not being seen at all within Google (as normal - Bing and Yahoo love the site). There is a lot of work to do on this site, but I would have thought to have seen some movement on the homepage at least by now. Any help is much appreciated. (Please note, there are some duplicate pages on there at the moment as I amalgamated some of the pages together last night and need to redirect these but I am having issues with redirect loops so those are not a contributing factor as this is a recent change). Thanks

Pop Up Advertisement - Bad for SEO?
So i have been working with a company running their SEO for close to two years now. Since i started to engage with them they have always used a very simple pop up for the first time an end user visits their website (via javascript and cookies). The pop up simply ask them if they would like to download a solutions brochure from their website. So as far as pop ups go, it is at least relevant. The client loves this pop up, i do not. For a while we have always held spots #1-3 for a lot of our keywords but we have started to drop to lower on the first page. So i have been researching to see if some of the new algorithm changes are targeting sites with this type of functionality. If i have some data i could definitely get them to remove it. So the question is, do pop-ups hurt your organic ranking? Thanks for the input! Kyle

Use of Apache mod_rewrite module for SEO?
I'm curious if anyone here running a large, complex, dynamic site has used the Apache server mod_rewrite module to simplify their site's URLs by rewriting them in a standard format. The chief use of this module for SEO purposes would be to aid in canonicalization and reduce duplicate content. For example, you could easily convert all of you ALL CAPS or MixedCase URLs to lower case, change all "/index.html" URLs to just point to "/", change all word seperators to hyphens, and so on. Any server-side ninjas out there with stories to tell? 🙂
