2 almost identical key-phrases with opposite ranking trajectories

I recently checked rank-tracking of a client's search-phrases. In Google UK variations of 2 almost identical search phrases dropped 30 places for one of these and jumped 30 places for the other. The only difference between the 2 phrases being the site's location (city) was placed first in phrase A and last in Phrase B. There were no technical or content changes on-site- How can this be?

this is something I check weekly (more or less), and it appears to be a sudden change. We are naturally working on attracting links with good anchor-texts esp. including location, but there has certainly been no aggressive push regarding this lately. I could try the "Location keyword - Get keyword in Location" approach without it looking out of place. Normally I'm cautious regarding repeating keywords in title-tags, but in this case it could make sense...

How long has it been like that? Do you track daily and the trend has been up/down or is this just a spot check?
I've not seen such dramatic swings before, but it does happen. Can you add the opposite phrase in the title somewhere?
"Location keyword - Get keyword in Location"
or something similar (recommended keyword in location, buy keyword in location) without it looking out of place?
That should bring it back more in line.
Has somebody linked to you with "location keyword" anchor text to push that version up?
Or have competitors been working on "keyword location" and not the other way round?
Hard to tell really and I'm not sure how to test it

I'm aware that there are duplicate content issues on the site, and as I'm not a developer I'm not privy to the complexity of the problem. But, I haven't seen such a significant change for one url before, tracking two almost identical terms for the same url.

Do you mean that there is a single page for both these terms?
So Page A was in position 50 for "keyword + location" & "location + keyword".
"keyword + location" now returns Page A in position 80
"location + keyword" now returns Page A in position 20

It might well be a duplicate content issue. If you have two pages which are almost identical with the only difference being the city name. Google may have classed this as duplicate content and chosen to rank one page much higher than the other.
Like Marcus said - it would be useful to have a bit more information.

Rankings going up, traffic decreasing

Ranking Factors
Hi, Question from a newbie. Several years ago, my company invented The Mosquito device which emits high frequency sound to disperse groups of troublesome kids. I guess you could say it went viral. The result was that we have always ranked at position 1 or 2 on Google and never really put any work in to it. It was automatic. My question is, that over the years we have brought out other products which were not as significant etc. and have put a bit of effort in to rankings in the UK and done OK, however, no we are about to launch something that is going to generate a lot of interest in the security market, but not as much as mosquito. We have therefore been putting some serious thought in to the name of this product and this is where i am stuck, i have only been learning SEO for a matter of months, just enough to know that i don't know enough, so here is my plea for guidance. Our company is called Compound Security Systems www.compoundsecurity.co.uk and we make GSM and GPRS communicating security systems that are battery powered and wireless, for use in empty properties, construction sites, farms, etc. Our new product is one of the above but with a visual verification (camera / video) system in it specifically for EXTERNAL use (there are 1 or 2 for internal use). The only name we can come up with that is not already in use is 'CompoundVision". Now, going back to Mosquito, we ranked 1 or 2 even though there are millions of pages of content relating to Mosquitos. We have a similar situation with CompoundVision. Compound is part of our company name, the camera systems will also be used to secure compounds, but 'compound vision' is how insects eyes work and there is a huge amount of content out there. I have run a keyword analysis in Moz.com Keyword analysis tool (see below) but i really do not understand how to draw a conclusion due to the mitigating factors above. For an e-commerce page with more than 2,000 products, how should I conduct my initial keyword research?
Hi all, A confused and frustrated SEO noob needing a little guidance here 😞 I'm a bit lost on how I should conduct my keyword research for a start-up e-commerce site selling dietary supplements (~200 brands and ~2000 SKU's). From my understanding, there are two different types of pages I have to optimize for other than the Homepage & CMS pages: Category pages and product pages. As part of the fundamental on-page optimization, I'm planning to write unique category/product descriptions for better visibility (as well as to avoid duplicate content issues) on SE. Consequently, this process has prompted several questions related to my keyword research. My questions are: How would I determine which keywords to optimize for? How many keywords should I target per product page? per category page? Should I include product / brand name as keywords? The site isn't live yet, but is set to launch in mid-August. Any ideas on how I can conduct my keyword research to be used for category/product level pages? Thanks all.

Targeting Local Phrase vs National Phrase
Hi i was wondering options since it would be hard to compete/budget with large insurance companies such as Met Life and State Farm We are looking to rank for Life Insurance Policy which according to Adword is it searched 74,00 Monthly So was thinking Life Insurance Policy New Orleans which i think i can rank for but according to adwords it searched - times. Why was there a big drop in a lot of my rankings today
I just checked my campaign and ALL of my Google ranks have drop by 2-40 spots for the 10 keywords I track. I know this is always a tough question to field, but what could cause should a drop across the board? ...a penalty? ...a late Google April Fools joke? 😉

Top Ranking sites for specific keywords
Is there a way to put in a list of targeted keywords and see what the top 5 sites on Google are? There are several competitor tools in SEOmoz but I can't find anything that would allow you to do that. I have a list of 40 or so keywords that I would like to check what sites are in the top 3 positions on Google for each of the keywords. Thanks in advance
