What will happen after I 301 this domain?
-
A while back I created a new website. Somehow my "scratch" copies of the site got indexed even though I didn't have links built to them. (In the future I will use noindex tags when I am playing around with designing).
Now, I have three versions of the site online...let's call them TheRealSite.com and Practice1.com and Practice2.com. Practice1.com and Practice2.com now rank #1 for their main keyword. (It's a relatively uncompetitive niche). TheRealSite.com is somewhere lower than page 20 despite having an exact keyword match domain name. I'm assuming that Google considered it duplicate content as it is the exact same thing as Practice1 and 2.
I had considered simply removing Practice1 and 2 from the server, but I was worried that if I did that, I would lose my #1 rankings if TheRealSite didn't recover.
So, what I've done is 301 redirect Practice1 and Practice2 to TheRealSite. I'm guessing that over time TheRealSite will come back to #1 and then I can just remove the files from Practice1 and Practice2.
Is this the best way to handle this situation?

[EDIT] Previous answer deleted because I had a brain fart and thought you were answering a different question I asked this morning! LOL!
Yes, this WBF was very timely! It sounds like this is exactly what I need to do!

Today's Whiteboard Friday post addresses this situation: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/cross-domain-canonical-the-new-301-whiteboard-friday
Since you have identical content on each page and it's basically the same site you could rel=canonical the secondary sites to the original and you should see your original site gain the rankings, while keeping the old sites online for the time being.
Like the others said, just a small amount of link building should let the original site outrank the others.
Cheers,
Vinnie

Excellent thank you.

Ah, tricky situation. Well, if no links have been built to any of the domains and one is ranking at no.1 for this particular keyword, then it would lead me to assume that it would be very easy to get to no.1 for it with the other domain once you have a few incoming links for it.
Therefore, it would seem most logical to build some links for the domain you want to use, and do like you said with the 301 until the proper site domain hits no.1

The problem is that the domain name is not great. It's a complicated situation because this is a site that I built for a friend/client and it was a really difficult relationship. He's now very happy that his business is #1, but it comes up as "ABCWebdesign.com/businessname" as the URL.
His business is seasonal and right now is the busy season. So, right now my thought was to 301 redirect the ABCWebdesign.com/businessname site to the BusinessName.com site and then if the SERPS have not reversed in a few months I'll just remove the content from ABCWebdesign in the off season.

Okay yeah, if the domain name is okay for the one that's ranking you could just replace the existing site with the one you want then. I know there is still an exact match bonus for keyworded domains but it's far from the be-all and end-all if everything else is right. And there's plenty of talk of it being worth a lot less now.
Mind you, I've seen some contradicting stuff. On the one hand there's the fact it can improve CTR as people see the keywords they've searched in the domain, but on the other hand it can be seen by some as a bit spammy... although I have no idea what the ratio of the advantage vs disadvantage there would be.
There is a hell of a lot of abuse of exact match domains though so it wouldn't surprise me (and this is only my own humble opinion) if the value of them went down considerably sooner or later.

Thanks Steve. There are no links to either site right now.

Have you been link building to the practise sites? If not, don't bother with the 301's at all, just put the real site on to the practice domain that is ranking well (if you're okay with the domain name). Exact match domain isn't everything, and in some instances it can be seen as spammy. Exact match bonus is a lot less now than it was anyway.

Domain name in URL
Hi we are targeting local cities across the UK with landing pages for our website. We have built up a few links for https://www.caffeienmarketing.co.uk/bristol/ and recently advised that I should change the URL to https://www.caffeienmarketing.co.uk/marketing-agency-bristol/ and 301 directing the old one 2 questions really: 1. is there any benefit in doing this these days in that this is the main keyword target we have for this page? 2. Do I get 100% benefit for all the links built up on the old page

Translated Content on Country Domains
Hi, We have blogs set up in each of our markets, for example http://blog.telefleurs.fr, http://blog.euroflorist.nl and http://blog.euroflorist.be/nl. Each blog is localized correctly so FR has fr-FR, NL has nl-NL and BE has nl-BE and fr-BE. All our content is created or translated by our Content Managers. The question is - is it safe for us to use a piece of content on Telefleurs.fr and the French translated Euroflorist.be/fr, or Dutch content on Euroflorist.nl and Euroflorist.be/nl? We want to avoid canonicalising as neither site will take preference. Is there a solution I've missed until now? Thanks,

Domain switch planned - new domain accessible - until the switch: redirect from new to old domain with 307?
Hi there, We are going to switch our local domain oldsite.at to newsite.com in November. As our IT department wants to use the newsite.com already for email traffic till then, the domain newsite.com has to be accessible for public and currently shows the default Apache page without useful content. The old domain has quite some trust, the new domain is a first time registered domain (not known by search engines yet and no published anyhow). The domain was parked till now. I am aware of the steps to take for the switch itself, but: **what to do with the newsite.com domain until everything is prepared for the switch? **I suppose users or search engines find the domain and as there is no useful information available it harms us already. My idea was to 307 redirect newsite.com to the oldsite.at but the concern is that this causes problems as soon as we switch the domain and redirecting with 301 from oldsite.at to newsite.com? Do you have any objections or other recommendations? Thank you a lot in advance.

"Starting Over" With A New Domain & 301 Redirect
Hello, SEO Gurus. A client of mine appears to have been hit on a non-manual/algorithm penalty. The penalty appears to be Penguin-like, and the client never received any message (not that that means it wasn't manual). Prior to my working with her, she engaged in all kinds of SEO fornication: spammy links on link farms, shoddy article marketing, blog comment spam -- you name it. There are simply too many tens of thousands of these links to have removed. I've done some disavowal, but again, so much of the link work is spam. She is about to launch a new site, and I am tempted to simply encourage her to buy a new domain and start over. She competes in a niche B2B sector, so it is not terribly competitive, and with solid content and link earning, I think she'd be ok. Here's my question: If we were to 301 the old website to the new one, would the flow of page rank outperform any penalty associated with the site? (The old domain only has a PR of 2). Anyone like my idea of starting over, rather than trying to "recover?" I thank you all in advance for your time and attention. I don't take it for granted.

Sub domain will not index - Next plan of action?
I'm not sure exactly what option i should take next. but i'll run you through a few points: The page is optimized to a rank "A" The page has 350 backlinks* a strong social presence Interlinking pages. High domain authority an OK page authority The domain ranks highly Every other sub domain rank highly. I make a search and the first page that ranks for this domain is a product page within the exact sub domain i'm trying to rank for, followed by some external blogs I've written and then the rest of the product pages. I've submitted the URL to web master tools twice and yet it still will not rank for that keyword. The only time i see the page index is if i copy the exact URL into Google. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Transfer webshop to other domain. Will there be a huge visit/sales drop?
A client of main has a specific domain for their webshop, separately from the brand the domain. The brand domain has much more authority (according to SEOMoz), so the conclusion in an other topic was that it would be better to move the entire webshop to the same domain as the branddomain. Like moving www.webshopdomain.com to www.branddomain.com/webshop Of course all categories and important pages will have a 301 to give through the build up authority. Does anybody have experience with this? I believe in the end this will be much better because all authority will be build up at the same domain.

But I am afraid of a drop in the beginning. If there will be a sales drop, I really must give my client notice of this... I hope somebody has done this before..0 -
301 Redirect - What happens to backlinks
Hello... One of my sites is losing rankings in G. I received the webmaster notification of unnatural links... My question is, should i do a 301 redirect of every page on my site to a new domain? If so, do the backlinks (which i believe are causing my rankings to drop) carry over? How about the good backlinks? Also, what would happen to the rankings i currently have on page 1? Thanks

Keyword-Rich Domains - Redirect?
Hi, Mozzers- I have a client that has a bunch of pretty nice keyword-rich domain names. Their traffic and rankings are good. They provide legal services in the Chicago area. I have lots of good content that I could use to start a blog using a domain like keyword,keyword-blog.com. Good idea? Currently I have a resources area on their website but feel like this area could be getting a little bloated and some news-related stuff isn't really appropriate. 2 Questions: Should I use one of the decent domains for a blog and build up the rankings, traffic, and link to the main site? Or is this lots of work for little payout? Both sites would be hosted in the cloud. Some of the domain names are related to their name, others are keyword or geo-targeted. Would it be wise to setup 301 redirects going to their website? Pros/cons? If you need additional info, please PM me for details. Thank you, friends! LHC
