Multiple Dmoz categories?
-
I'm looking at a competitor who outranks me and I see that some of their top links are several links from different dmoz categories. Is it common practice to get into several dmoz categories? I always thought you could just have your site in there once!

If you are relevant in multiple categories I see no harm in trying to get links from all of them, it's quick and easy to submit your site. The category structure in Dmoz isn't perfect so it can be difficult to know which is the most relevant category for your site especially with some being so similar.

As you won't see real traffic from dmoz, it's usualy enough to get listed in the most important catergory for your business. Dmoz is an hight valuable backlink. One listing is sure sufficient for Goolge. Multiple entries won't count much, they come from one domain.

In theory most sites can only be listed once according to dmoz guidelines. However, there are some exceptions according to dmoz site specific guidleines: http://www.dmoz.org/guidelines/site-specific.html#multiple
If you feel the multiple links you are seeing isn't an occasion where an exception should be made, you could send a message to dmoz about it. I've seen the same type of thing before, and I think it is also because of editor bias/opinion.

DMOZ Directory Impact on Rankings
For about 5-10 years ago many SEOers said that it is in particular important to be in Dmoz. What about nowadays?

Multiple Sites Vs. Single Site
We're a growing law firm looking into expanding into different practices of law. The question we're running into is should we create new sites for our different practice areas or add them to our current site? If we create multiple sites we have to divide our linking building efforts, but if we maintain everything under a single domain will be harder to be considered an "expert" on each section of law and get ranked well in each category? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Google disavow DMOZ/ODP spam sites?
Hello Looking into links to my one of my sites (over 10 years old) I've found that along with some bad spammy links, around 80% of my inbound links are from directories that are exact copies of ODP. Should I be concerned about / asking for removal / disavowing these links? Normally I would be trying to get rid of low quality links like this, but since they are ODP clones I'm not sure it's worth the effort. The sites openly state that their data is from ODP (Open Directory Project), but does this mean Google ignores them? I could spend my whole life swatting these links. Thoughts? Edit: I'm hoping for suggestions that specifically reference the ODP clone site situation. I did not create these links, I guess I should have made that more clear.

How does Google treat multiple backlinks on the same page?
Hello mozCrew Just a quick yay or nay. We have an embeddable code on our site for customers who want to post our link on their website listed here: http://www.accupos.com/etc/embed-code-restaurants.php But in our link, there are actually 2 separate links, one branding link that says the name of our company, AccuPOS, and another link which targets a specific target keyword "Restaurant POS Software". My question is, does Google only give credit for the branding link, since it is listed FIRST? Or will we get double credit? Is this a good or bad practice, and what would you recommend? Thank you! Yahoo! Directory Category Question
The listing for my company was buried in a bad category in the Yahoo! Directory that had no Page Authority. I was able to get them to remove the old listing because I couldn't find the account info for the individual that originally created it. I resubmitted and they didn't put my site in the category that I requested but the Page Authority of the category that I was placed in is 50. Is this OK? Or should I repeal and ask them to move it to the category that I had originally requested which I feel would be more relevant for my company and listing which also has a 50 PA?

Links from multiple sites coming from the same server?
Hi SEO Mozers, As I structure my link building campaign I come across alot of directories some of which are located on the same server. If I am to place links on these sites is this is negative signal for big G? The reason I ask is because I see that a competitor has used these various directories and is ranking on the no 1 spot for a moderately competetive keyword. I am able to place links on the sites with almost no effort at all therefore even if it does not pass alot of link juice is it still worth it for me. But if this is seen as a negative I would not persue it. What is your thoughts on this? Thanks in advance, Ross
