Keyword domains
-
Hi everyone.
Two questions regarding keyword domains (e.g. "widgets.com")
- If we have to choose a domain with an extra word, does it make a difference to have the added word before or after? E.g. "my-widgets.com" vs "widgets-now.com"
- Does it make a difference if the extra word is a generic vs a 'real' word? E.g. "my-widgets.com" vs "japanese-widgets.com"
Thanks a lot for your feedback!

Wow thanks everyone for the immediate and very insightful answers. Cheers!

Keyword domains are most effective when they are a perfect match for the query.
I have a few keyword domains and from my experience their ranking value declines quickly when even one letter is added. For example bluewidget.com would receive a small rankings boost for "blue widget" but very little to none for "blue widgets".
So, your question about adding an extra word.... I'd say that you will get almost no benefit.
From what I have seen keyword domains work better on Yahoo and Bing than they do on Google.

I don't have an answer for you on your first question, on your second question however, I am pretty sure domains with those spammy "godaddy suggested" alterations are going to come across as spammy to both users and googlebot.
Get rid of them all.

What i have learned from other SEO Authorities around here is that unless your domain name is exact ex: widgets.com targets "widgets" keyword the rest having the keyword in the name doesn't affect rankings as you wish.
so if you have either my-widgets.com or widgets-now.com it's the same won't help you much on rankings.
Also i would suggest you get a better name without hiphens as well as one that you can build sort of a brand on it.
Also you may want to look at 2 keyword match domains... ex: my client sells school books and i bought buybooks.tld so the idea is "buy books" and long term "school books"

Feedback from Matt Cutts recently hinted / said that having the keyword in the domain although helpful isn't as significant a factor as before. And on the answer to your question.the order should not be significant really. Having a Generic word may even help a little to give the site some color as may people go for the generic and having a descriptor may help.
Best of luck

Acquired domains for SEO
hi there, For one of our insurance websites we acquired a domain, this domain is going to be redirected to our domain. After some research we discovered the domain we've bought also includes other domains which 301 redirect to specific 'insurance products'. These domains are also included in the deal. But what is the best technical solution for redirecting these specific redirected product domains? They already redirect to the product pages of the domain we've bought, so after redirect this domain, the sub (product) redirected domains will also link to us. It would be like this: A) www.sub-carinsurancesite.nl (301) -> www.domain-we-bought.com/car-insurance -> www.ourdomain.com/car-insurance

How can you best use additional domains with important keywords
Currently I have a corporate website that is ranking all right. However, I have some additional domains containing import search terms that I would like to use to get higher rankings for the corporate website, or allow these domains to generate more traffic for the corporate website. What are best practice in using these domains with keyword terms, to make most use of them, for ideally both ranking as well as generating additional traffic. All input is highly appreciated.

No Keyword in URL
SEOMoz (and other platforms) advise that I need to add my keyword to the page URL, however as far as I'm concerned it has been, so why don't these platforms see it. My home page URL is www.salesandinternetmarketing.com, but apparently I haven't added the keyword internet marketing to the URL, what advice can you give me please? Lindsay

Two Sites - One Domain
I just want to be sure, but if I install a Wordpress blog in a subfolder of a HTML site, Google will see that as one site, not two different sites, correct? Even if there is two index files?

Should this site start again on a new domain
Hi We have not done SEO on this site they have used another company who looks like they outsourced and the links have been built by a third party all blog networks and this company have said they cannot get the links removed. Google flagged artificial links on this web site in February and in April it lost over 10000 visitors in a month and its just free falled ever since. The categories have been recreated and no redirects created due to the amount of backlinks from the blog sites to the original category pages but the site is not recovering its down to 1500 visitors a month and used to get 14000 a month. So should my customer ditch the domain and move this site to fresh domain? http://www.kids-beds-online.com Any answers would really be appreciated. thanks Tracy
