$1,500 question
-
I have $1,500 to spend to promote 8 years old website.
Almost no SEO work was done for the site in the past 3-4 years. The site has a couple hundreds (around 300) external backlinks pointing to the homepage, and around 30 backlinks pointing to internal pages. It gets around 60% traffic from referring sites, 30% direct, and 10% from SE. The homepage has PR 4. It ranks around 70th place in Google rankings for one of the main keywords. No keyword research has been done for the site. Looking for long term benefits.
What would be the best way, in your opinion, to spend this money?

Thanks, I emailed you.

Fair enough. Like you said without knowing the website you can't give anything else then general recommendations.
Not really sure where to go from here. Do you offer private consultation for somebody like me?

Without seeing your site, understanding your product niche, knowing your customer base, etc. any advice offered is completely blind.
Your focus is promoting your site to build traffic. This can happen through SEO, SEM, social networking promtion or ads, and almost any sort of marketing. You can make a viral video or a bumper sticker which says "LionsFan.com" (if that was your site). The possibilities are almost endless.
Without any idea of your market, I am not willing to make any specific recommendations.

Thanks for the answer Ryan.
In the past few months I improved the site's design and content considerably, and there is not too much room for improvement in that area anymore. There are always things to improve, off course, but not too much, and not something that will change revenue drastically.
In other words the site is ready for some minor work on design and content , and at the same time there is a lot of room in figuring out ways of bringing quality visitors to the site. I would like to spend these $1,500 to bring quality visitors to the site, and spread the word around. Any ideas about what would be a good $1,500 investment in this area?
What would be a desirable bounce rate? This site has around 50% right now.

The first step I would recommend is to examine the site itself.
Any form of promotion depends on what visitors find when they arrive at the site. No matter how good your site appears, you will retain a percentage of visitors while others will not be happy and move on. You want to retain the highest percent of visitors possible, and convert them towards whatever your site goals are such as sell a product/service, complete a form, register, etc.
Site improvements vary greatly depending on the site. A few possibilities are improved layout, A/B testing, logo or art work, design work, social integration and acquiring trust symbols. Anything change you can make to better connect with visitors and earn their trust would be beneficial.
Once your site is solid, the next step is content. You could generate new content, infographics, images, videos, etc.
Only once you have a well designed site and some solid content which visitors will want to see would I recommend working on promoting the site. Until you reach this point, there is too much leakage (i.e. bounced visitors) to promote most sites.

Homepage organization schema question: logo lives on amazon server, can I call that out on the structured data?
Basically, the homepage organization schema has called out the logo, but it lives on the amazon server. We're having issues with Google rendering the correct logo on the knowledge graph. The URL for the amazon asset looks something like this: <brandname>-assets.s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com/<logo>.png</logo></brandname> Calling that out on the organization structured data for the logo is okay right?

Bingpreview/1.0b Useragent Using Adding Trailing Slash to all URLs
The Bingpreview crawler, which I think exists in order to take snapshots of mobile friendly pages, crawled my pages last night for the first time. However, it is adding a trailing slash to the end of each of my dynamic pages. The result is my program is giving the wrong page--my program is not expecting a trailing slash at the end of the urls. It was 160 pages, but I have thousands of pages it could do this to. I could try doing a mod rewrite but that seems like it should be unnecessary. ALL the other crawlers are crawling the proper urls. None of my hyperlinks have the slash on the end. I have written to Bing to tell them of the problem. Is anyone else having this issue? Any other suggestions for what to do? The user agent is: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 7_0 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/537.51.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/7.0 Mobile/11A465 Safari/9537.53 BingPreview/1.0b

Sites in multiple countries using same content question
Hey Moz, I am looking to target international audiences. But I may have duplicate content. For example, I have article 123 on each domain listed below. Will each content rank separately (in US and UK and Canada) because of the domain? The idea is to rank well in several different countries. But should I never have an article duplicated? Should we start from ground up creating articles per country? Some articles may apply to both! I guess this whole duplicate content thing is quite confusing to me. I understand that I can submit to GWT and do geographic location and add rel=alternate tag but will that allow all of them to rank separately? www.example.com www.example.co.uk www.example.ca Please help and thanks so much! Huge spike in 404s and 500 erros
I'm curious what might cause an inordinate amount of 404s in the reporting from SEOMoz's dashboard. I'm exploring links that are marked as 404s and they are (for the most part) working. I talked with the sysadmin and there were no outages this weekend. We also had a number of 500 errors reported in Webmaster Tools but everything seems to be up. Any ideas?

A very basic seo question
Sorry, been a long day and wanted a second opinion on this please.... I am developing an affiliate store which will have dozens of products in each category. We will not be indexing the product pages themselves as they are all duplicate content. The plan is to have just the first page of the category results indexed as this will have unique content about the products in that section. The later pagnated pages (ie pages 2,3,4,5 etc) will have 12 products on each but no unique content. Would the best advice be to add a canonical tag to all pages in the 'chairs' category pointing to the page with the first 12 results and the descriptions? This would ensure that the visitors are able to browse many pages of product but google won't index products 13 and onwards. Am I right in my thinkings? A supplemental question. What is the best way to block google from indexing/crawling 90,000 product listings which are pulled direct from the merchant so are not unique in the least. I have previous played with banning google from the product folder but it reports health issues in webmaster tools. Would the best route be a no index tag on all the product pages and to no follow all the products in the category listings? Many thanks Carl

Redirect on exact match domain to Brand domain question :)
Hi, If I have a website with the domain crazysocks.co.uk and a title tag 'black socks' would I see any benefit redirecting blacksocks.co.uk to crazysocks.co.uk, to give my keyword 'black socks' a boost in the SE's from the EMD. I see it loads where an EMD is indexed for its term but when you click the result it redirects to a branded domain. I personally cant see this being true but wanted to double check.

Googles Now Giving More Power To Ranked #1?
Not sure if this has been discussed before, but if you make certain searches in google i.e. "sports authority" you will find that the site ranked #1 has extra links below it like a "library" into their site. How do you get this "library" to appear on your site when your site is in #1? Attatched is a URL to flickr with a screenshot of the search. http://www.flickr.com/photos/65949972@N07/6006729328/in/photostream/

Archive or no archive?... That is the question!
When running a classified site, what is best practice for what to do with expired ads? Should they stay on the site with a sold stamp perhaps? Or should they be moved to an archive subdomain, with the original URL 301 redirecting to the new archive ad? I'm kinda thinking the second option but I suppose the only issue with this is you would have to have a consistent flow of new ads on the site to prevent categories from getting too thin. Thoughts on this and any other/better solutions would be much appreciated. Thanks.
