SEO Developers
-
I have a team of inexperienced SEO developers and the argument we continually have is that its a marketing role - however most of it is technical, no view state, no js, page load time, csssprite, metatags, frequency of updates to server, duplicate content via coding methodology, lioading content prior to ads, not spidering ads (IT says impossible yet google says required) etc.
I looked at your referrals for developers and couldnt find any that recognized SEO as part of their skill set - do you believe tehre aer developers that specialize in this?
Thanks,
Michelle

one option is to have all ad code in separate files that get loaded on page-view, through an include. If you then place all ad files in their own folder, you can then noindex the entire folder in the robots.txt file.
Engineering and Marketing go hand - in - hand regarding SEO. What engineers say is "impossible" regarding SEO is due to their lack of specific methodology and the human condition that tends to cause people to instantly conclude that if they have never done it, never seen it done, or never been shown, then it must be impossible.
This is an existential concept common with people who are extremely logic oriented. Rather than arguing, it's much more efficient to do the research, and find the answers. Only at that point is it then wise to go back and say - here's a way it can be done. Show them links to actual blog articles or discussion forum pages where the topic is discussed, if need be.
It comes down to understanding that it's a teaching moment, with no ego involved. Purely educating others, so everyone can work together for the common good.

It sounds like they want you to disallow those components in your robots.txt file to keep them from getting indexed by search engines. Here's what the Google Webmaster Help says about robots.txt. If the ads are in an iframe, you can disallow the page the iframe points to. If it's an Flash file for example, and the link is in the Flash, you can block robots from indexing any of these ads if you put all of them in their own directory. For ads that will get indexed (if they're in the HTML), if you put a "rel=nofollow" on the links, I think search engines consider that enough?
For page speed, there are a few free tools people to help with page speed. In Chrome, you can install Page Speed. You can install the add-on in Firefox as well if you've installed Firebug first. This will test your page and give you a list of things you can do to improve performance. Once it's installed, you can have it test any page on your site, and it'll give you a list of things to do to improve performance. Another similar Firefox add-on I haven't had much experience with is YSlow.

DART is the industry standard software used to serve ads on a site. Google webmastertools indicates that ads should not be crawled utilizing the robot text function.
I admistrate mopst of this software as a marketer but several items such as page speed, etc are out of my range of skills.
-
Sorry, but what is DART code? Looked around a bit but couldn't find any info about it.
Depending on what you want IT and marketing to do... mostly I monitor the tools, and tell marketing and IT what needs to be done. I don't think IT would need to be in there, you should probably be able to tell them what changes need to be made without them digging through data and reports. Marketing could use tools to find good keywords to target, and especially if they do link building to find opportunities for that.
-
Thanks - Do you know how to have the robots not crawl the DART code - as my developer is saying that is not possible. Also would you expect IT and marketing access your tools or marketing only?
Thanks, Again,
Michelle

Good developers should do a lot of these things by default, like optimize page load time, use sprites, avoid duplicate content, load page content prior to ads, etc. A good SEO should be aware of all of these things, and when things need to change, should be able to communicate those changes to a developer. Identifying these issues are more on the SEOs themselves, not the developers. In my experience, most tasks are more front-end tasks, and a few are back-end, so depending on what your developer does, they should be able to handle the tasks within their niche if you point them out.
I don't think they need to put "SEO" in their skill-set.

SEO + Structured Data for Metered Paywall
I have a site that will have 90% of the content behind a metered paywall. So all content is accessible in a metered way. All users who aren't logged in will have access to 3 articles (of any kind) in a 30 day period. If they try to access more in a 30 day period they will hit a paywall. I was reading this article here on how to handle structured data with Google for content behind a paywall: https://www.searchenginejournal.com/paywalls-seo-strategy/311359/However, the content is not ALWAYS behind a paywall, since it is metered. So if a new user comes to the site, they can see the article (regardless of what it is). Is there a different way to handle content that will be SOMETIMES behind a paywall bc of a metered strategy? Theoretically I want 100% of the content indexed and accessible in SERPs, it will just be accessible depending on the user's history (cookies) with the site. I hope that makes sense.

Do Letters With Accents Affect SEO?
Hi Guys, My company has a franchise of a foreign company that uses an accent/foreign letter in its brand name. We have to refer to this franchise with this symbol on our website to meet their standards. I've done some research on this but its not conclusive, so i was wondering whether anyone here can confirm this for me; Will using the letter with this symbol impair our rankings for this franchise name? Obviously as a UK business people search for this franchise with a regular letter and not the accented one. I would have thought that Google is clever enough to recognise the meaning of the accented letter by now and therefore it wouldn't affect rankings (much). Furthermore, do you think that it would make any difference to use the HTML element to represent the accent rather than copy and pasting the symbol onto our website? I would've thought this would help Google pick it up, but it might not make a difference anyway! Any help is appreciated. Thanks Sam

Should i put an introduction on my site for better seo
Hi, my site is www.in2town.co.uk and we have been having serious problems with our site since our upgrade. Before the upgrade, our site was on the first page of google for many years and most of them we were in the top three, now however since the upgrade of our site we have had serious problems. The main keyword for our site was lifestyle magazine, but now after checking this keyword we are now on page 12, this has gone down over the past couple of days. we had an introduction and information about our magazine on the home page, trying to rank for the keyword lifestyle magazine, we were jumping from page nine to six to ten, we took the intro off as a developer said that we had done enough to rank well for the keyword without putting any text with the keyword on our site, but since taking it off, we have dropped down more in the rankings. I would love to hear from people on their thoughts on this and if we should put back the intro at the top or where they feel we should put it and should we put about the magazine at the bottom. I was always taught, if you want to rank well for a keyword then as well as doing all the linking, you also need to make sure you optimize the page with the keyword looking forward to hearing your thoughts on this

How to SEO a Website Built off Godaddy?
I have a client whose website is built off Godaddy services. I know Godaddy is not the right choice for building a website, but what's done is done. The client has already bought the Godaddy services and there's no way I can tell him to go rebuild his website before we could optimize it for SEO. I'm already facing a lot of challenges while optimizing on-page elements. When I wanted to verify the ownership for Google Analytics and Webmaster Tool via his Godaddy account. the process failed many times. it looks like Godaddy is using some kind of caching not allowing us to modify the codes. For example, I'd applied the site verification codes for Webmasters Tool 48 hours ago, and the metatag for google site verification is not yet updated in the frontend. It's quite frustrating. What would you suggest?

Cloud Hostings & SEO Effects
Is there any negative to cloud hosting? I believe they share the same IP addresses but is it true you can still get banned if someone else on a shared IP or server does some spam?

Switching Hosting & SEO
Hello friends, We are facing the prospect of switching to a new hosting account or company. We are currently using a third-party reseller account but are outgrowing that account. We are considering VPS and dedicated servers. However, this will mean updates for IPs and nameservers. Does anyone have experience with SEO consequences of making switch? Best practices? Tips? Obstacles? Any and all comments/advice welcome. We're trying to balance the potential SEO ramifications of making the switch with the consequences of reduced site speed.

Are there any SEO implications if a page does two 301s and then a 304?
Curious to see if this is a positive or negative thing for SEO...or even perhaps, neutral. h9SZz
